It really means alot to people to show up and give support. Your friend needs a reality check.

My dh lost his 51 year old mom when he was 23. I remember all of the friends that he hadn't seen in years coming to the visitation and how touched he was. When you lose someone it feels good to know that others remember your loved one and were touched by them. I think that you really should go. You should absolutely go. It was wonderful to see how many people loved and respected his mom. You are doing a great thing.

I second what the previous poster said about going...I'm so glad you went. My dad passed away in December and I too was touched by the people who came to the viewing.

When I was younger (1st - 5th grade) I had a babysitter everyday after school who had 3 daughters. They moved after 5th grade and we never saw each other again. When I was in my mid-20s, we saw the obit for the mom -- I decided I needed to go to pay my respects. The wake was over an hour away, but I went and I'm glad I did.

You did a v. nice thing by going to the wake. And, you def. did the right thing!

Personally, I think your girlfriends were wrong saying not to go b/c it's been a long time, etc. It honestly means so much to the family of the deceased that you are thinking of them, remember the deceased and attended the wake. I remember when my FIL passed away, people I knew, who never met FIL, came for me! It meant a lot that they were there! And, these were people who I only dealt w/once a week when I taught CCD (religious ed) classes at our church! It's not as if we were best, close friends ... just knew each other from teaching and they came. It meant more to me than anyone can imagine!

I'm sure the family of the deceased was pleased that you remembered their loved one and came to pay your respects!
