Attack of the Killer Amoeba

I listened to one of your recent shows about not swimming in the water and I was completely disgusted when I heard Pete discussing the various creatures and issues related to swimming in the Disney lakes. While the risk of being eaten by a gator are terrifying enough, the thought of amoeba swimming up my nose and eating my brain were enough to give me Jaws Syndrome (aka: Stay Out of the Water).

I told every Disney fan I knew about Pete's new crusade. After the unpleasant details of the story were told, everyone asked me the same question, "How could Disney let anyone in the water for excursions like wakeboarding and waterskiing?

I wasn't quite sure so I figured I would post here and see what I learned.

When people swim they tend to take in more water then when wakeboarding or watersking. People do water sports tend to try to stay up, and when they fall in they hop back up or get on the boat. Also shallow areas of the water tend to breed the bacteria and amoebas more then deep water.

I hear that the shallow water has less Trans Fat than the Deeper water so Amoebas like to stay near the shore

I was under the impression that the amoeba live in the silt at the bottom of the lake. In the shallow water around the edges of the lakes the bottom will be warmer because it is closer to the surface and be a more suitable habitat for the amoeba. Also, people paddling or swimming will stir the silt up get them amoebas all riled and hungry for brains.

Have the alligators developed an immunity to the amoeba or do they just have the taste for mammalian brains?
