I have a friend who is considering a surprise trip to Atlantis for her husband's 40th birthday. She has asked me to look into it for her. They are bringing their three daughters, ages 7, 5 and 3, with them on the trip.

Anyone been there lately? Any recommendations? There are so many accommodations to choose from. Rates range from $157 per night to hundreds of dollars. The resort is currently offering a special -- stay three nights get one night free, so that helps a little.

From my research, the restaurants looks really expensive - even casual dining.

Is Atlantis worth it? It looks amazing - is it? Does it live up to the hype?

Thanks!

Check some of the Disney Cruise threads. There is another hotel on the Atlantis site (or next to), a Comfort Suites I think. It is cheaper than the actual Atlantis but comes with access to the Atlantis water parks, aquarium, etc.

Many cruisers have booked at the Comfort Suites to get 4 water park passes for the 1 day room rate, rather than pay $150 or so per person on a cruise excursion.

Thanks. I know about the Comfort Suites, but I think my friend wants to stay at the Atlantis resort. I think the Comfort Suites is a great option if you are taking a cruise excursion to Atlantis for the day.

Thanks for your input.

I've visited Atlantis eight times in the past nine years, and I have a timeshare there.

Tripadvisor has the best message board for Atlantis. Look in the Paradise Island Bahamas forum.

No two ways about it, food is expensive. Its a foreign country that imports almost all of its food from the U.S, so its best to think of money there as a foreign currency...even though its not.

Regarding accommodations; the more you pay, the more luxury you get. You can have a perfectly decent vacation in the less expensive towers. The CS is a totally satisfactory hotel, and has breakfast included in the room rate, which is a nice savings.

If you can make your questions a bit les general, I'd be happy to offer suggestions.

Thanks for your reply. I will get back to you, if I have specific questions.

The number one thing I have heard about Atlantis is how expensive EVERYTHING is!

Two families that I know who have lots of Money and travel regularly and who I have Never heard mention Money stated that First about the trip.

They both started off saying how expensive the food was!

That being said...I still have a desire to visit!!! :confused3

We also were thinking about it for Dec; but then I called my parents-they go there alot; to ask them about the food costs-it is very expensive! My Dad said it's less expensive to eat @ WDW!!!:scared1:

So we're going to WDW again! LOL w free dining; I know that isn't an option for you-as it's a bday party weekend.

Also check the costs for excursions etc-dolphin swim etc; it's not included-I don't think.

It really looks like an amazing place! Someday we'll go...;)

We stayed at Comfort Suites a couple of years ago and it was great. Plus breakfast was included so we didn't have to worry about paying that. Atlantis is right across the street. It was actually closer for us to walk then staying at some parts of Atlantis.

Our room was bigger also - We stayed at Atlantis all day, and would go back to shower and get ready to go back to Atlantis.

Food was very expensive!

We have a good friend who took his 3 kids for spring break one year and they had a great time! Like the PP's have said he did say it was expensive (and he has no $$ issues). He said he spent about $10k for the week for the 4 of them.

Thanks everyone. I will share all of this good information with my friend.

It's a great place to go with family. I wish they had other dining options. The meals and meal plans are priced so outrageously. All inclusive options would be great at this place. It was a very expensive fun vacation that we wont likely repeat unless there is a great incentive to do so. Beaches in Turks and caicos is a better option and we spent about the same $.

WDW can be a lot less expensive. But there are ways to save at Atlantis, if that's how you want to vacation.

This is very true. The CS is closer to the evening activities and dining in the Marina a Village than the newer Reef and Cove towers.

In any case, no matter where you stay at Atlantis, you'll be doing quite a bit of walking.

You can stay for a lot less if you stay in the less expensive towers, and don't go to the up scale restaurants every night. If he visited during spring break, in a suite, with the gourmet dining plan, didn't take advantage of the value lunch meals, had several frozen drinks a day, and did many excursions, this would make sense.

But if you have smaller budget, you can stay for much much less....comparable to a moderate-to-deluxe stay at Disney at the same time of year.

Outrageous is not really a helpful description. Food is expensive, no question. But the dining at Atlantis skews to the very upscale, so when a meal at a fancy restaurants is compared to a meal in New York or San Francisco, Atlantis prices are not outrageous.

The fact that most of the dining at Atlantis is a bit too upscale is my big criticism. They need a bit more casual inexpensive options. They have them (Johnny Rockets, Bimini Road, the pizzeria and deli) they just seem like kind of a let down when you are on such a nice vacation to such a special place.

By the way, the meal plans use to be nicely priced. But at one point, like at WDW, they got over utilized. Atlantis' decision was just to raise prices to the point that the meal plans are actually more expensive than going a-la-carte.

Beaches in Turks and caicos is a better option and we spent about the same $.
Do you really think that these are comparable....this is is like comparing a rustic beach vacation in the North Carolina outer banks to a trip to Disney World....yes, they're both vacations, but are very different experiences.

I've done the secluded island Caribbean vacation before...it's a great experience, but the only thing comparable to Atlantis was the fact that there were beaches at the resort.

Now you made me look it up.:sad2:

The menus are all on the site with the prices. We are interested in "fine dining" as part of a vacation so while it seems insane, I think I would enjoy a vacation like this.

Maybe I can get DH to take me there as part of our anniversary this year? It will be 20yrs. Hmmmm.....

Look up the menu's, it is fun to read them.

I would recommend one of the dining plans. I haven't been there for a few years but I know that the dining plan was the way to go. Atlantis is the perfect place for a long weekend type of vacation. IMHO 7 days would be too long unless you plan to just lounge on the beach or lounge by the pool.

We would be spending with the dining plan for a adult family of 4, 500/per day at least.

So for a 4 day trip you are looking at 2000 just for food. Wow that is hefty.

Now I would take issue with the fact I would rather go to the other fine dining places and they are not included in the dining plan.

If I was going I would really have to hammer out what I would do.

I guess for me, it sounds like staying at the Comfort Inn with hot breakfast and then enjoying Nobu Chef's table for dinner (for example) sounds like a better value for my family. I have 2 teens.

Interesting thread.:thumbsup2

You guys need to realize food is expensive in ALL of the Caribbean. $8 for a gallon of milk, $6 for 5 oranges... etc.

Things have changed.....only under certain circumstances does one of the dining plan make economic sense....like if you eat a full breakfast buffet every day, and have a full-blown dinner every night. If you just want a slice of pizza or a salad one night, its better to go a-la-carte. Unless there's a deal or kids eat free or you have a stick-in-the-mud who will whine every time he sees the prices on the menu.

This is a great strategy.

Exactly...it's a foreign country.

It has nothing to do with a foreign country, it has everything to do with the lack of dairy cows. I mean technically, I live in the US, but we have to import milk from the mainland/PR which equals expensive.

It has nothing to do with a foreign country
In the Bahamas it does. Everything imported had a duty added on top of whatever it cost to bring into the country.

But I see my prior point was a bit tangent to yours...I know St. Croix is a USVI...just wasn't actively thinking about that in this discussion.
