I am sure this is probably considered blasphamy at this board, but we were thinking of planning a vacation to Atlantis next year. I know very little regarding this resort. Does anyone know if there is a wonderful, informative board like this one for Atlantis?

Thanks.

:D

i asked the same question on the cruise line forum and was given 2 websites: www.atlantis.com and www.bahamas-mon.com
be careful if you search blindly in search engines. i just typed in the word atlantis and got all these porn websites!!!!!

isn't the atlantis so cool? i wish it wasn't so expensive but we're definitely planning a trip there anyway.
good luck and please post if you find any other websites or good deals

I have been interested in Atlantis also, after watching Regis & Kelly do a show there awhile back. It looks like a beautiful place! I went looking for info & unfortunately, I found some complaints. Here is a trip report I copied from "Travel With Kids" (not that off topic, Disney is mentioned at the end!).

The following is an email I received from a very disappointed family traveler. Seems like a good idea to share her comments: obviously, these are the views of just one individual, but I know that if I were planning a trip to this resort, I'd be very interested to hear such a cautionary tale.

Paradise Island – Atlantis Resort: Sink, Sank, Sunk (or should we say Stunk?)
Paradise Island - Atlantis has a lot of eye candy in terms of water exhibits and architecture, but sadly this candy is only a sugar coating for a lot of hype with little substance. Perhaps I should have realized there was a problem when our transport to a purported upscale hotel squeezed some 19 people into a tiny van like sardines. Perhaps the clue phone should have hit when Guest Services tried to get us involved in a Time Share sales pitch within an hour of our arrival, or when a lunch sandwich cost $15. But being someone who tends to give a place a fair shake, my family and I went into wait and see mode. Unfortunately waiting only made matters worse.

After having saved for a very long time for what was supposed to be a dream vacation, our dream rapidly turned into a nightmare. In brief, here are just a few of the other problems we encountered first hand (and several reported to us again and again by other guests who were likewise disappointed if not down-right irate with the situation):

· Uninformed Employees: On one very simple question about a walking tour of Atlantis we were told once that they left every fifteen minutes, another time that they only left twice a day, and the third time that they were no longer an offered service. Additionally, when giving directions very few employees could tell you how to get from “here to there” in the straightest possible line.

· Layout: The resort is not made for elderly, people with any type of handicap or for younger children. Everything meanders and it is often quite a hike to the nearest restaurant

· Leak in our Bathroom Ceiling: At four am on our first day we were awoken to the sound of pouring water from the ceiling. It took four phone calls and an unpleasant meeting with the hotel manager that night to get the situation repaired.

· No indoor Activities: Should it rain, get prepared to either gamble or watch rented movies in your room. There are no indoor pools, pinball machines, etc. for those days when weather or wind strike.

· Teen Cub & Movie Theater were only open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays in the night, meaning teens had no place to go the rest of the week (returning to the indoor activity problem). Movies were rarely appropriate for children, and teen club had a cover charge even for hotel guests.

· Live Entertainment: Where? What entertainment? In six days I saw ONE steel band near the beach

· Sporting Equipment and Sports Center – both required fees even to hotel guests (as did the spa – no free gym, hot tub, sauna, yet for what we paid for this trip we could have bought our own hot tub!)

· Ice machines not marked (one had to hunt behind the maid’s gear to find them)

· No restaurants that serve early morning breakfast for guests with early flights or other plans (specifically no restaurants that accept their own prepaid meal plan). Speaking of which

· Meal Plan: First of all I had to BEG to get reservations at reasonable hours in the restaurants that accepted the “gourmet” meal plan, and secondly they add on a mandatory 15% tip even if the service sucks. But for the Marketplace restaurant and one decent steak at Fathoms – don’t eat at the resort. Go into town, save money, and get better food. By the way, our meal plan didn’t even bother to include the little café in the lobby of the hotel in which we were actually STAYING and it took us asking for information to get anyone to review the particulars of the plan with us.

· Restaurant Facilities: NONE of the restaurants have in-café toilet facilities. You have to go outside, around the corner, down a hall if you or your children need to relieve yourselves!

· Restaurants Continued: Few of the restaurants offered a true “kids” menu with portions suited to them, not to mention not offering any crayons or other diversions. Heck at least a McDonalds you get a toy for under $3.00 whereas even a hotdog ran $5.00.

· Pools: did not open till 10 or 11 am and then if you forget to get your towels back to the attendants by 5 pm they will charge you $25 each.

· Tours: The discounted tour coupons you receive from the Atlantis reservation desk are for truly shoddy services. For example, for a mere $65 per adult you can go on a lush blue lagoon cruise. This “lush” experience begins with a boat that has broken chairs, and includes a lunch that could have been made by the local homeless shelter. Some deal…

· First Aid stations – I never saw ONE anywhere.

· Rooms: There are only a very few places that can take families of 5, meaning you’re stuck renting two rooms when one could easily do. They actually have a policy against more than four in a room. While the rooms are large and airy, we did not receive soap etc. one morning and had to request it special the next day. Additionally unless you request the bed be made up fresh, they do not change any sheets. While this is done under the guise of being ecologically friendly – it strikes me more as lazy and cheap.

· Not Kid Friendly: Unless the weather is good there is little, if anything for children to do. Oh, yes, there’s the discovery kids camp at a whopping $40 for four hours. When we took our children, half their facilities were not working – computers were down, etc. so the kids basically played tag and other games (as my seven year old stated plainly – boring!)

Do I seem bitter – you bet. At around $2,000 a day for a family of five (with meal plan and airfare) I expected five star service and can barely rate what I received as passable for a Motel 6! Save your money folks - or at least go to Disney where you get something substantial for your dollar.

That review sounds about right. My parents go twice each year. They just got back a week ago travelling w/ 10 other people and said they will NEVER go there again! I was amazed. This is a trip they plan for like we plan for disney. They were so dissapointed. My Aunt had heard that it had been sold about a year ago and thinks that has something to do w/ it. they had clogged toilets, each couple was on differant floor / or diff building. One nite Dad leaned against his door and it opened!! He called down to maintenance to inform them of broken lock, they came up an hour later...looked at it for about 15 mins and said they couldn't fix it till next AM , said he should use the latch. The food has ALWAYS been expensive so that would be unrelated to the new owners. As stated b4, my parents go faithfully twice a year. Limo picks them and their guests up at airport and drops them off each time. Their rooms are comped and any guests they bring pay only 59 per nite, so they are treated like royalty and still got lousy treatment. Read alot b4 you consider spending $$ at this resort. Good luck, Kim

booo--so sad to read these reviews since it looked so awesome!
will have to think more about this since it is so expensive. i may be able to get this trip paid for by my employer so maybe i could deal with these issues if the money isn't coming out of my own pocket. but still, for the price, you would expect more from them.

WoW! I have to have my DH read this! He has been planning trips to Hawaii and has thought about Atlantis too. (And there are those commercials we keep seeing on TV) Thanks for the info!!

Michele

Oh, this is so sad :(

Any thoughts on a really good, family all inclusive?

If you want to visit Atlantis without staying there, why not take a cruise that visits Nassau for the entire day and go to the resort for the day. When my girlfriend got married, she had her wedding there. It was cheaper for me to cruise there than it was to stay there. Best of both worlds. (Of course, you could always stay at another hotel, like Comfort Suites, and partake of Atlantis. I guess I'm just partial to cruises.)

Ohhh NO my wife and i are thinking of going there in Oct is it really that bad

Thanks for the info -- we might give it a miss now

jj.......

I had a close friend of mine who went there for 4 days. I know that she wasn't real impressed with it. After talking with her, it didn't leave me with a "I've just go to go there" feeling and I've since crossed it off my list.

We visited Atlantis when we were in the Bahamas three years ago. It was beautiful. We stayed at the Radisson Cable Beach at that time. It was an all inclusive and we really enjoyed the resort and were able to visit other things in Nassau without the price tag at the Atlantis. If you really want to do Nassau you might want to consider one of the other resorts (there are many) at a reasonable price.

I've been there twice, the most recent time was in August, and I never had one problem with it. In fact, I love the place.

The only thing I hate is the meal plan...

If you have any questions that I might be able to answer, let me know. I went with my parents, younger brother (15) and sister (12), cousins (same age) and grandparents. We all loved it.

So EP, was that review above not accurate in your opinion?

What do you think in the above review is harsh?

Certain parts of the review were accurate, certain parts were not. I think it depends on what you expect and what your family likes to do.

For instance, my family is content laying by the pool and splashing down waterslides, just being in the turquoise ocean. Atlantis has AMAZING pools. We spent many days just hopping from pool to pool experiencing waterslides, the lazy river, waterfalls, etc. On days when we weren't in the pool, we were at the beach, in the lagoon pedalboating, kayaking, snorkeling...we had fun. If your family isn't into the water, I can see how you can say there isn't much to do during the day.

I think it only rained one day that we were there (the first time I went), and we went to The Dig (aquarium, absolutely amazing), went shopping, and explored the resort for the day.

First Aid- My brother got stung by a jellyfish in the ocean. We went up to a lifeguard and he was taken care of right away.

Layout- The resort IS spread out. Honestly though, the place is HUGE. It really is three hotels in one. As a result, you're going to do alot of walking.

Rooms- We're a family of five as well, and yes, they require you to get two rooms. Could be a hassle, we always just invited other people along :) Every morning our room has soap, shampoo, and they provided us with little Atlantis animal bath toys. At night our bed was turned down and we had little cards with inspirational messages on the pillows (shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you'll land amungst the stars). This could be because we stayed in the Royal Towers, I don't know about the other two hotel sections.

The employees that I encountered were helpful and never rude. I didn't have a bad experience dealing with them.

Teen Club- I went once when I was 15 to surf the web. I was never big on those things...this summer I was 18, so i was in the casino the whole time.

Food- Lets be honest, not the greatest food in the world. There are some places that are very good, and some that are downright horrible. I'm not a fan of the meal plan either. It seems that you pick a downgraded version of less ex*****ive places (ALL BUFFETS) or the most expensive places in the resort. There really isn't a middle ground.

What do I like about Atlantis? I love the atmosphere, the theme, the attention to detail in the decor of the resort itself. It really is a beautiful place. I have never gone with small children, so I can't give first hand experience on that one. Whenever I go I feel like I'm being pampered beyond belief.

If you're expecting a value, Atlantis is NOT it. Yes, it is expensive, and yes, they make you pay for everything you do there. Still, some of the best vacations I've had with my family have been there. If you go knowing what to expect, I think that you can have an amazing time.
