If you are going to be visiting Nassau during your cruise - and know who Dale Chihuly is, I recommend hopping in a taxi to Atlantis to see the four major pieces he has installed at the casino. I have been a fan of his for years and always enjoy seeing his work in person.

If you want a preview - go here (http://www.chihuly.com/installations/atlantis/)

Can anyone confirm/deny if the chandelier in the atrium of the Wonder is a Chihuly or not? - I don't think the people I asked on the Ship knew I was speaking english, as they were a little confused when I asked the question.

Thanks

Yes, it is a Chihuly.

If anyone is interested in seeing any other pieces by him, the Franklin Park Conservatory is loaded with works of his right now.

You can get information at:

Yes, both the one in the Wonder and the Magic are his work. The unique thing about both is they are his only works NOT done in glass.

The one at the entrance to the casino reminds me of Superman:The Movie, remember the fortress?

Seriously, they are impressive works, there's also one in the new wing of the Milwaukee Art Museum.

I thought both the Magic and Wonder Dale piece were glass....ummm anyway he also has work hanging in the Lobby of the Belliagio hotel in Las Vegas. I took a pic of it when were there in august. Staying there again at the end of the month and want to explore and look to see if he has more pieces at the hotel.

his work is truly impressive...

my best friend and his family are cruising with us 1/15/04, and I can't wait to show him the Chihuly sculpture in the atrium....

Definately plastic. Told to us by the Imagineer that was part of the design team for the ships. It was a challenge for the artist to work in plastic but it makes sense for where it is.

He also did the huge piece that is near the hotel entrance (below the indoor waterfall) at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. That one is done in glass.

My DW had dinner and a tour at his workshop near Seattle when she was there for a Microsoft conference last year. She said that both he and his work were very impressive.

Thank you for the info about the pieces on the wonder and magic. I wasn't sure it was his as it looked like plastic and I didn't think he did anything like that with plastic. It looked to me like someone was 'borrowing' his style.

Has he done anything else in plastic?

Thanks

Adam.,

I know the imagineer who gave our Art of the Theme tour said that it was the first time he had ever worked with plastic as a medium. I don't think he has done any plastic since then. It was supposedly very difficult, since plastic doesn't have any of the same characteristics as glass, and he had to test several different types of plastic so it gave the illusion of glass.

DisneyGator - thanks for the info. I find it facinating that he actually created these disney pieces in plastic. I would like to hear him discuss the creation of them.

Frasier. :)

I thought the same thing, did not realize it was his!

The piece(s) at Bellagio are gorgeous, the first time I saw his work. I also saw some of his work at the Victoria & Albert museum in London. Little did I know that I also saw it on the Magic!

ohiominnie, I have a client in Columbus and I am going to go see them for no other reason than to be able to make a side trip to the exhibit there. And of course, it had to be Frasier, how could I have not known that? - Seattle!! :D

I was tickled to see the NW connection to DCL in the atrium pieces. When we were married about a gazillion years ago, one of the wedding gifts we got from some of my folks chi chi Seattle friends was this ugly (I thought) small glass piece. It was put away in its original box in the waaaay back of the pantry for years. Many years later I was looking at some of his modern works, and I noticed and remembered that wedding gift. Dug around and found it, and sure enough! So funny. Still do not display it...not my taste and don't want to pay insurance.....so it is in vault. Maybe I can retire on it?? Nah.....
