So we are driving down to the World on Sunday, and Atlanta is freaking me out.:scared1:

Is there a seasoned veteran who knows the bestest, fastest way to navigate thru that city??

I am a country girl and dern it, all those hiway changes are gettin me scared!

Can you just stay on 75 and not swim all over the city???? Is that not allowed???

Yes you definitely want to stay on 75 however I would recommend the carpool lane -- watch the signs though and be careful to stay in it - do not freak out at the signs over the other lanes - stay on 75 in the carpool lane.

Haha! I read the thread title and thought you were complaining about the airport.

Yeah, just stay on I-75 and its a straight shot through downtown.

Assuming there is no major traffic driving through Atlanta is very easy. I would highly recommend staying on I-75 and as long as you can keep following the I-75 signs you will be ok.

I75 thru Atlanta isn't a problem so long as traffic is moving. Yes, get in the HOV lane and stay in it - it does break away from the main traffic but that's normal, don't get out of the HOV lane.

You'll be fine.

I drive through Atlanta at least twice a month. Sunday is my favorite day..........very easy

Sunday is the best day to go through.

Do you watch Nascar?

Just think in your head, when Daryl Waltrip screams:

5 Wide

Don't be scared. I did it my first time, and there are a lot more people like us, than the 85 mph people.

I don't think this can be said enough, stay in the HOV lane. In the HOV lane you won't have a much "weaving" traffic. Just watch the signs and stay in the lane, as long as you are in the HOV lane you'll be fine(even when I85 merges or splits).

I've been in Atlanta several times and driven during rush hour times at least twice, both times something that amazed me is how people there drive 80-85 mph in heavy traffic with basically everyone tailgating each other, car after car just a couple of feet from each other. Now I'm comparing it to my I-95 South Florida traffic where you have some cars doing 90 and some doing 50 but we just don't get the same kind of tailgating that I saw there. In a way it seemed like everyone there was driving very coordinated and organized but yet very dangerous.Down here it seems like everyone is doing their own thing, and it shows as anytime you drive I-95 south of West Palm even on a sunday at 2am you're likely to encounter a crash.

Wow, all this time I thought this was a crazy Noth Jersey Turnpike thing.

It's a death ride! I just let them pass. Why should driving be so stressful? :headache: I'm never in that much of hurry to risk my family's life or someone else's.

I read about the driving through Atlanta on another thread which caused DH and I to rethink our route. We plan to go to St. Augustine the first night anyway so we decided we'll drive to Savannah and then straight South to St. Augustine before going on to DW. We're hoping that will be a better drive and we'll get to see different scenery than going the regular route. :goodvibes That is unless I can get over my ever-increasing anxiety of flying so we can fly again. :scared1:

I live just north of South Bend...On our dirve down, we went straight through Atlanta. It was an ugly mess, but we survived it...just stayed in HOV lane all the way through and you're fine...Coming back, for a change of pace, we went up I95 into South Carolina. We picked up I26 and that took us to Knoxville where you can work your way back to Indiana. That was a very nice drive. Coming down, we went through Chatanooga and the mountains were nice, but you weren't in them for long. Going the I26 way, you avoid Atlanta and are in the mountains for much longer. Very beautiful drive.

Just like NASCAR...Go Fast! Turn Left! Woo Hoo!:woohoo:

I take the HOV lane all the time and do everything that was recommended, Stay in the lane and just let people pass you on the right. The locals will see your out of state plates and figure you out.

DD and I drove down to WDW last August for her CP, and I drove right through Atlanta during rush hour. Definitely stay in the HOV lane like everyone else said. I dreaded driving through Atlanta, since DH usually does the driving, but he didn't go with us this time. As for driving a different route, it looks like you are like us, from MO, and there really aren't other options getting there unless you add a bunch of mileage to your trip. Who wants to do that when you're going to Disney? You will be fine. If I can do it, anybody can. Hey, St. Louis traffic bugs me!

We're just across the river from Louisville so we thought we'd take 64 out of Louisville and head to Asheville for the first night since we'll be leaving around 4:00 p.m. Then we would go on through Savannah and down to St. Augustine. We thought it would be a nice drive for a change of pace.

Actually, I live in St. Louis -- so the driving thing is no biggie for me.

My Dad, however -- different story.

He went to a VFW convention in Orlando, last year from Southern KY -- here's how he did it...

1. I-65 South to Montgomery, AL
2. US 231 South to just past the FL State Line
3. I-10 East to North Central Florida
4. I-75 & Tollways South to WDW

Of course, there is some extra driving involved, but no major metroplexes like Atlanta come into play (actually, the only large cities on that route are Nashville, TN and Birmingham, AL).

Might be worth a try...
