Hi all!

My son and I are thinking of heading to Atlanta for a couple of days as part of a road trip this summer. Our first priority is the Aquarium. Probably Coca-cola world, too and possibly a few other things (if you think there is something that's "not to miss.")

I think these things are in the heart of the city, right?

Any suggestions on an good place to stay?

I'm not looking for a super cheap place and I don't know what is best in terms of closeness/budget/ease of getting places. I saw a Hilton right across the street but would hope to keep it cheaper than the $240 + parking they want. That said, if the convenience is really worth that much maybe I'll bite the bullet, at least for one night, then move somewhere else.

Any places I should AVOID staying?

Thanks!!

There is an Omni hotel right across the street there. It may be a little on the pricey side though. I had the pleasure of staying there in March for the marathon and it was very nice.

You're looking at the centenial park area. It's been years since I've stayed downtown, but there used to be an Embassy Suites in that area that was nice. I believe there was a Ruth's Chris in the hotel? Could be wrong.

Since this is the budget board, this might interest you:

How old is your son? I could give you more tips.

Since you have a vehicle, you could consider Stone Mountain too. It's not downtown, but it's pretty cool.

Stone Mountain is a must do. Lots to do there for you and your son!:thumbsup2

There is a Hyatt Place Downtown that is nice. My DH and I stayed there for a "staycation" a couple years ago. It isn't far from all of the downtown attractions - short cab ride. I just did a check on room prices and it seems to be in the $125-130 range, and that includes breakfast.

I second the idea of the CityPass. Zoo Atlanta is worth the visit, IMO, Stone Mountain, too. But Stone Mountain has gotten very pricey to do all the attractions. However, you can go to the Laser Show for just the cost of parking.

There are some good hotel deals on Groupon too. They also recently had a Groupon for the Aquarium as well.

I sent this to someone else a while back...but...here ya go.

I would look at the Omni hotel in CNN center. Its literally adjacent to Phipps Plaza and Centennial Park. You can get it for between $100 and $150 a night, and the hotel is quite nice (I have actually stayed there a few years ago.). Easy walk to the Dome, easy walk to the Aquarium and the World of Coke, if you decide to do that, and easy walk to a MARTA train station. When booking, ask for a view of downtown / Centennial Park. You may have to pay a tad more for the room, but the view at night will be worth it!

Two blocks south is the Glenn Hotel. I have only walked by there, never been inside, much less stayed there. They do have a rooftop bar there, and I know a few friends who have said it is quite nice (good place to conduct business), but alas, I have never been.

There is also, as I recall, and Embassy Suites to the north about a block, also off of Centennial Park.

But, personally, I would go with the Omni.

Also, if you use the MARTA train (NEVER use the busses) to get around the city while here, be sure to check their operating hours before the trip. They keep changing them...

The Aquarium or World of Coke, as they close early on Sundays...6p, I think...

As far as restaurants to check out, I would consider...

$$$ Bones Steakhouse

Best steakhouse in the city, I think. It isn't cheap (think $50 to $75 per person, if you get a low priced wine), but well worth it!

It is in Buckhead. You can get there using the MARTA train and get off at the Buckhead Station, and there is a rather pleasant 3 to 4 block walk to the restaurant. I would do that, rather than messing with parking in Buckhead on a Saturday Night (which will all be mandatory valet) but that is just me.

$$$ Woodfire Grill

One of my personal favorites...it was run by Kevin Gillespie, a Top Chef finalist a few years ago, but he recently departed. However, the new Exec Chef there (Tyler) is excellent!

The menu is excellent, but they also do a chefs table here that is $70 for 5 courses and $90 for 7 courses (per head), excluding wine. I would HIGHLY recommend the latter. I have done it twice.

This is in Piedmont, and you won't be able to easily get there using the MARTA train, however, parking isn't nearly as crazy as Buckhead. Taxi would cost around $30 round trip...however, I would just drive there or stop there before you get to your hotel.

$$ Chateau de Saigon

Vietnamese food with a French twist. Sounds weird, until you consider the history of Vietnam. Anything and everything here is excellent.

This is a haul from downtown, as it's over by the CDC. No way to get here by MARTA train. So, car is the way to go.

$$ Meridian Restaurant (yeah, I had to google the name)

I have not eaten here, but it is the restaurant in the Omni hotel. I have always known it as "that restaurant in the Omni hotel". That's all I can tell you.

$$ McCormicks

This is just south of the hotel. Good seafood, as I recall, but haven't eaten there in a while.

$ Park Bar

Highly recommend this place, if the two of you are ok with the bar scene. It's a very well run little spot, and looks beat up from the outside, but it isn't on the inside. Bar style food (burgers, wings, etc). Very laid back atmosphere. Just tons of fun. It's a block east from the hotel.

$ Googie Burger

I took the kid here when we went to The Kids Museum. It is a fun little place. Burgers and milkshakes. Good classic diner food. I mention it because it is about half a block from the hotel.

$ Han Il Kwan

This is an authentic Korean BBQ place. Be sure to request a table with a BBQ grill in the middle (about half the tables in the restaurant are like this).

The place is also a hole in the wall, so don't expect a flashy experience. But, the food is excellent, the servers are friendly, and I enjoy every visit. I normally get Bulgogi (marinated beef) and Dak Bulgogi (marinated chicken). It comes with a plethora of sides, and lettuce. You make your own lettuce wraps!

Fun, reasonably priced, and delicious.

However, it is a haul from downtown, being located in Doraville. The only reasonable way to get here will be by car.

$ The Varsity

Ok, this one I don't like so much. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, but something about it just doesnt attract me. I much prefer the one in Athens (UGA). This could be because I am a UTenn fan though!

However, this is the original, and is a Georgia (Tech) tradition. It's worth checking out, and is certainly "football fare"!

If you get off the MARTA at the North Avenue station, it is one block west.

$ Gladys Knights Chicken and Waffles

Just good ol' Southern Soul Food. Great prices and unique southern food with a twist (this ain't Cracker Barrel). If you hop the MARTA you can get off at Civic Station and it's a short 2 block walk to the restaurant.

I am sure I have left stuff off here, but I hope this helps and is what you were looking for.

I okay unless know how take Marta trains I found them confusing. I never taken a public bus in my life. Where i live we barely have bus service. I there is a restaurant call Summit Dinner that has excellent food for cheap for under 10 dollars. I would share one plate because the portions is huge.

My kids like going to Six Flags over Georgia. i second the Varsity restaurant but to the original one.

"I would look at the Omni hotel in CNN center. Its literally adjacent to Phipps Plaza and Centennial Park. "

Just a small correction to this: The OMNI hotel is NOT adjacent to Phipps Plaza, but rather Phillips Arena. Phipps Plaza (which, oh by the way, has a Lego Discovery Center!) is located in the Buckhead district and the OMNI is downtown.
