DH and I are doing Atkins (almost 3 weeks) and we've got a trip scheduled for September.

How Atkins-friendly are the restaurants? Should we notify them in advance as to what is possible as far as alterations go??

We're really making a serious effort to do this (even though DH called me earlier to say he ate part of a burger bun :(), and I don't want to totally undo my progress.

Any suggestions???

TIA!!!

Flower,

I tried to be good, but there are so many carbs at WDW. It can be done if you stick to buffets, but watch out for the sauces and gravies. I just tried to resist the breads mostly and sampled small portions of starches. I think the walking around took care of the carbs! I didn't gain a pound.

Have you checked the menus at Deb Wills' website?
http://www.wdwig.com/menu/menus.htm

You'll notice that it's quite easy to get salads which is how I survive. I do pick out such things as tomatoes or carrots if they're present. Also, buffets as Texian said and restaurants such as 'Ohana that concentrate heavily on meat are helpful.

Just look for the same things on the menus as you would eat when you are cooking at home. Hubby and I had no problem when we were up there...finding things to stick to our atkins plan if we wanted too...lol.

Remember, meat, cheese, salad, seafood, every place offers these type things. If we were in the mood for a burger, we took the bun off, left the cheese. (no ketchup of course).

We have found that eating out on Atkins plan is easier than ever. We try to eat out at least once a week. Last week we went to Red Lobster...it is nice. We are able to eat out and have a drink, and keep losing weight like mad.

And yes, we are still in induction.

I personally decided that I'm not gonna sweat it with Atkins when I am in The World. There are tons of things you can eat but I'm not going to deny myself some sweets or fruit or bread when I'm on vacation.

Its a week. I'll live. I mean, I could be run over by a rhino tomorrow. Vacations are a diet free zone! ;)

I would keep a close eye on the WISH board... Ray Sharpton is making a trip in the next week or so and has indicated he'll post about his experiences on Atkins at WDW... He'll be a wealth of great information.

Also - keep in mind most places are willing to simplify dishes to suit your needs - leaving off gravy or sauces, replacing a potato with a steamed veggie... Unless you have some very specific needs that are unusual to the menu where you are going I would not expect you need to call in advance.

Thanks everyone!!

I've hung out at WDWIG and provided many links to the menus... but never for myself of course. I even have a bag of menus here that I collected for my brother and will have to give them a look.

I did check my Atkins carb book though........ are tomatoes that bad??? I usually use grape tomatoes in my salads- maybe 4 or 5. Would that keep me from seriously losing??? I know about carrots, but I was hoping that I could keep tomatoes during induction. I'm past the 2 week point on induction, but I want to stay low to keep losing.

TIA!!

I don't think that tomatoes are THAT bad but I found them easy to cut out and I also tend to eat too many when I have some (plus I end up craving sugary sauces and ketchup). I just cut them out because it's easier for me. Tomatoes are really healthy though so I sometimes wonder if I should rethink that.

Flower, I've been doing low carb since this past January, and since I'm planning a trip for December, I've been taking all sorts of notes . . . many from the W.I.S.H. board on this very site. I'm going to give you two links and hope they both work. The first link is to another thread in which I posted some of those saved comments regarding low carb eating at Walt Disney World.

This second link is to the results I got when I did a search on this board, using the words "low carb." (Search only works in the wee hours of the morning.)

Good luck! Doing low carb is a worthwhile journey. I've lost 63 pounds so far, and I intend to stick with my new way of eating even at WDW. I don't think of it as a diet. Rather, it's been a change of lifestyle for me.

119 days and counting . . . again!

tomatoes are not that bad on atkins...you are right plano girl.

Plum/roma tomatoes have like one carb, regular a little more than that..don't have the carb counter in front of me right now.

We have tomatoes many times throughout the week, on salads with bacon and cheese, in omelots or just on the side of a steak.
