Because of kidney stones, I am suppose to reduce my protein intake.

Would the Atkins Diet still be feasible knowing this?

I think a low-carb plan would be hard to follow if you weren't eating a good amount of protein.

Then again, I think it would be near impossible as a vegetarian, but I know there are some vegetarians eating low-carb.

You wouldn't be doing Atkins, but you could still reduce your carbs (refined flour and sugar are NOT food groups!)... eat low-glycemic fruits & veggies, and you'd still be doing your body & blood sugar a world of good.

You might do a search at www.atkinscenter.com, and see if they have anything to say about reduced protein and kidney stones.

I just read on the Atkins website --it says not to start this program if you have kidney problems....you might want to read the info there before making a decision.

Hi Jamsmom. It might be wise for you wait until the kidney stones have gone away before you try Atkins. If you decide to try atkins at another time be sure and drink lots of water or the kidney stones could return.

You don't have kidney disease, do you? If you do, high protein would not be good for you.

It's great to see you here on WISH :)

No kidney disease, but my body does not throw proteins off like it should...even with medicine.

I think eating cheese and meat would be easy for me to follow :) But, since I have to limit meat.....

I am just starting (again) to think about losing weight (again) and am wanting info on what is available. I don;t want to do weight watchers.....and I am a very picky eater (hate onions, lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers...)

I love hearing all the great advice.

I have kidney stones. Will doing Atkins cause an attack?
There is no evidence to indicate that people who do Atkins suffer a greater frequency of kidney stone attacks than people who follow another dietary regimen. If you have kidney stones, however, you must observe the rule about drinking eight or more glasses of water per day. Continue to see your doctor regularly so that he or she can monitor your condition.

Doesn't all the protein you eat when doing Atkins cause kidney and liver problems?
These are two of the most popular myths perpetuated about Atkins. There are no studies showing that Atkins causes kidney or liver problems in healthy individuals. In fact, at The Atkins Center, we constantly monitor our patients’ lab results for changes in kidney and liver function. There are research trials that looked at liver and kidney and heart function, with participants on ketogenic diets similar to the Atkins approach in which no negative effects were observed. Also, when we did a follow-up of more than a year on patients at The Atkins Center, including checking their kidney and liver functions, there was no adverse effect. Of course patients in kidney failure are extremely restricted in everything they consume, including water, so Atkins would not be appropriate for them
