At what point did you make the jump from a 1 BDR to 2 BDR?

At what point do most families start opting for a 2 BDR over a 1 BDR? We have a 2.5 year-old who is a HORRIBLE sleeper (and I do mean horrible...up 5 times a night, makes a ton of noise, etc.). Trust me, we've tried everything. She's just going to have to outgrow it I guess. We're expecting #2 in Sept. I told DH that I figure that our Thanksgiving vacation this year will probably be our last time in a 1 BDR, because once the baby is sleeping in a crib we can't have DD and the baby in the same room. DD will wake the baby up:sad2:

How does it even work out practically with a 2 bedroom and such young kids? Does one parent go and sleep in the "studio" portion with one child while the other parent/child occupy the living room/master bedroom? I didn't think that we'd even consider a 2 BDR with such young kids, but given the circumstances I'm thinking that we may not have a choice:sad2:

We have a 5,2.5 and 1.5 year old and will stick with 1br as long as we can. They learn to sleep thru it all, our 1.5 year old is a terrible sleeper and the other 2 sleep right thru the whole thing. The two youngest share a room at home and not that big of a deal.

Wow, that's interesting! Where do you all sleep in the 1 BDR if you don't mind me asking? Do all 3 kids share the master? Do you or your DH end up waking any of them if you go in there to use the restroom at night? I'm a little concerned about that because anything will wake DD up. Right now she uses the master and we just try not to use the restroom after she goes to bed (not so easy when you are pregnant, LOL!).

My DD yells/moans/cries off and on all night most nights. Sometimes she whines and moans for 2 hours at like 2AM. She wakes the entire house up most of the time:sad2: Maybe the baby will learn to sleep through it, but if not I can't see subjecting her to sleeping in the same room as DD, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, my kids are all older and we have always needed a two bedroom since buying in. :scared1:

I feel for you. I remember those days. I don't think I got much sleep until my oldest daughter was 5 or 6. She was a light sleeper and had the same waking up as your daughter. (Is your daughter tall for her age? Could she be having growing pains? Mine did when she was little and at 11 she is as tall as me. I always thought they were just a myth until she suffered with them.)

Anyway, my sister who is going to OKW with us in a GV this summer has a now 2 1/2 month old and that kid could sleep through a tornado. She just sleeps and sleeps. So you never know, each child is different and as much as your first doesn't sleep the next one may be the one you have to worry about waking up if there's a storm.

We are going on our first trip as DVC members in November. We have 3 kids, 7, 12, and 14. One motivating factor to purchase DVC for us was to have the extra room and so we are starting off with a 2 BD for our first stay at SSR. We may consider the 1 BD at AK for a future visit to be able to stay longer - planning to check out the display rooms while there so we can contemplate that one.

Yes, she is VERY tall for her age. She's 2.5 and she already wears a size 4 for height reasons. Her feet have grown 2 sizes in 2 months. She's about to go into size 10/11 Crocs when her best friend (same age) still has room to spare in her 6/7's:eek:

She's definitely having growing pains. We figured that out last night when DH gave her a half-dose of Motrin at 3AM and she slept soundly afterwards. Unfortunately, her growth spurts/growing pains occur much more frequently than other kids her age. Thus, the screaming/moaning at night all the time:scared: Fun stuff. I think we're looking at a 2 BDR after Thanksgiving for sure. Of course, we share a 2 BDR with my parents at XMas, so I think I'll just stick her over on their side at night for some quality time with her grandparents:rotfl:

Oh, and she eats as much as an adult. The kids meal on the dining plan just doesn't do it for her, LOL!

The AKV display rooms are really nice! I just had to add that...the master bath is awesome:thumbsup2 I LOVE that you get 2 bathrooms in the 1 BDR there, too. Totally awesome!

We have them sleep on the pull out and one or two on the floor or even with us in the master. With the kids this close in age we don't sleep much. We are bringing the two olders in May and they will sleep on the pull out together - or do the sleeping bag thing. Regardless of where we are at least one finds their way in our bed from waking up with a nightmare. The kids think it is cool to be on the sleeping bag and the pull out. Also OKW is got some big rooms! We play musical sleeping arrangements as there is always at least one cranky kid - but we are lucky once they are sleeping they are out. If they get up it is not because of sound it is usually because they had a nightmare or sick. I believe they have a pack and play in the room too.

As soon as our third child is out of the pack 'n play, it's two bedroom city for us! He's a big 14 month old, so after our June trip, we'll have to upgrade.

I have a very long 2.5 year-old who still sleeps in the Pack 'N Play every night. She refuses to move to the twin bed in her room:confused3 I think you'll get some more mileage out of the Pack 'N Play with your 14 month-old if you want to;)

That said, I'd still totally move up to the 2 BDR after your upcoming trip :)

Any chance your DD takes Singulair for asthma or allergies? I work in an elementary school and have recently had several occasions to hear parents comment on their child's crying/screaming/bad dreams and they have noticed an improvement since taking them off that med. My DS takes Singulair and has no problems at all, but thought it might be worth inquiring about.

We went thru this with our DS. Motrin was and warm moist towels were the only thing that worked. I would definately let the baby adjust to the noise, don't try to shelter him/her from it otherwise, it will wake them up. Most will sleep thru noises if they are used to them.

Our kids were older when we bought so we went right to the 2 bedroom. Our oldest is now married so we are just now in a 1 bedroom.

My 2 girls are 11 and 12, and I feel we are at the point where we need to move up to the 2BR. They did fine this last trip on the sofa bed, but I think they are young ladies now, and need the privacy of a room. Next trip is a 2BR likely!!

Ok, now don't laugh or think that we are awful parents ... we would use the laundry room in the 1 BR at OKW whenever we had a little one that slept in a pack in play. It is wonderful and worked out for all 3 of our babies. With the first we were in a 1 BR and hubby and I slept alone in the bedroom and baby was in the laundry. With baby #2, we put him in the pack and play in the laundry and our oldest, who was 2 1/2 slept on a "blow-up" bed on the floor in out 1 BR. With #3, he was in the laundry room and the other two kids where in bedroom #2 and hubby and I where in the king room, once again alone ... could be how we ended up expecting #4! :rotfl2: -Jennie

P.S. make sure to take a small night light because the laundry room is very dark when the door is closed!

Our kids were 5 and 8 when we bought DVC in 1993. We bought enough points for a week in a 1BR in March, which is when we usually went. However, we tried November because the kids had almost a full week off school. The same number of points got us a 2BR for the week; we were hooked. There was NO WAY we were going to have them both sleep in the living room. (OKW was the only resort then, and since we have one son and one daughter, the plan was to have one sleep on the sofa bed and one on the loveseat.)

We LOVED letting them have their own room, their own bathroom, and their own TV. We knew we would never be able to have all four of us in a 1BR! So now, they're almost 20 and 23 and when we all go on vacation together, we're still very happy with our 2BR!

No, DD doesn't take anything for allergies or asthma. Thanks for the suggestion, though! We're always looking for what could possibly cause her poor sleep. I think I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that it's just the way she is:scared1:

could she have allergies? My DS (he was about 18 months) would wake up in the middle of the night & be very uncomfortable--Doc thought perhaps b/c he was itchy-------tried Zyrtec at bedtime---it was wonderful. We kept him on it for about a year & he's been fine since. Our youngest would wake up at night coughing like crazy, we tried Claritin (as it was over the counter) at about 2 y/o for him & he's been on it since (he's 3 now). We did try & take him off of it about 2 weeks ago & right back to 'cough, cough' 'wake, wake';)
good luck (it response to the question, we own at AKV & they sleep 5, we're planning to have the kids in the 'living room' & DH & I will take the BR).

First, let me start off by saying I feel your pain. DS6 was a horrible sleeper for 3 years. By then I was pregnant with twins. I prayed to God that they would be better sleepers...well, at least one of them is! LOL!

Now a friend of mine (who has 3 daughters) was telling me about switching to organic milk because she had read that the growth hormones given to the cattle can really affect some children and even cause young girls to start to 'develop' younger.:scared1: I'm not sure if that has any validity but your daughter sure does sound tall for her age.

You might want to switch to organic milk for a month or so and see if her sleeping improves.

Boy...it's getting really close for us. DS is 12 and DD is 5 (will be 6 May 21st). We are getting to the point where DS is complaining about sleeping on a pull-out bed, and DD doesn't fit in between us quite as easily as she used to fit!!! With that said, we're renting a 1-BR in Aug. We're thinking about taking an air mattress, but I'm sure there will be fighting and complaining.:headache: What's wrong with kids these days??? Don't you guys remember going on vacation with your parents or someone else and being SO happy to be there you would have slept anywhere on anything just to be on vacation??? ;)

If you're in a resort that has them, request a dedicated 2-BR. It doesn't have the outside entrance and is just like having another bedroom in your room. When we've rented at other places in the past, I've put DD in the king size bed with me and DH went and slept with DS in the 2nd bedroom. That worked out really well for us because the living space was still in tact when someone got up in the morning. No worries about waking someone up and/or moving them.
