At what age do kids learn how to write sentences/sentence structure?

My dd is in Kindergarten and someone told me she should already be learning how to write small paragraphs. I thought that was way too fast for a 5 (almost 6) year old. What grade do kids learn this?

In my personal experience so far... K, so usually 5. There is loose learning on sentence writing in most pre-K's here for K prep as well. Amazing how it has changed. I have also lived in areas where the sentence structure does not occur until the end of the year in K.

Kindargarten here. They are required to keep a journal. By the end of the year they are supposed to be able to write a small paragraph with simple sentences.

Sentence structure is introduced in K here. Some kids will grasp it quite well, and proceed to paragraph writing by the end of the year...some will only get as far as completing one sentence. But, capitalization, finger spacing, punctuation, descriptive words, etc........ are all taught in K.

My DD is in K, she does free writing during the day where she is supposed to do her best to sound out words and free write sentences. She isn't expected to do it perfectly or even have the sentences form cohesive paragraphs. The sentences should be complete sentences.

ETA: My DD will write paragraphs as directed by the teacher via copying. She will also write paragraphs with help from me when she needs help spelling words. She often likes to write her own little short books. The words and sentences are usually very short and simple for the most part.

Definitely kindergarten here. My DS is in the first grade this year and they he has been writing 3 page stories all year. The pages are not regular notebook paper, but they are also not the wide lined tablet paper either. Sort of in the middle size-wise.

Wow a journal? That is so advanced for traditional kindergarten.

Maybe you're thinking bigger than it actually is for that age. A journal for K is really simple. Things like, "I have a cat. She is black. She is funny. I like to play with her. We have fun." It's all pretty simple wording. I know my daughter gets flash cards at school with core words she uses or will use often so she can form these types of easy sentences.

Yeah, my DD5 is in Kindergarten and she desperately wanted a journal so she could start writing her own stories. The one she came up with yesterday is priceless, even though she has to stop every third word to ask me how to spell something.

:haha: My daughter's have taken on characters resembling spongebob and squidward. "Moooom how do you spell - KRABBY PATTY?"

Some kids are just not ready for that yet. I'd hate for all kids to be held to that at that age.

My son was 4 when he entered kindergarten. He only knew some of his letters and most of his numbers. He wasn't interested in them at all (we and preschool tried to work with him on them but he preferred other subjects).

Yes, he started out behind other kids. But, I know he wasn't alone in his 'lack of knowledge' in his grade back then. They did expect kids to know their numbers and letters. They did not expect them to be writing words or reading yet (though I know some kids were at that point, too). There is such a range at age 5, that you can't hold all kids to the same standards.

Kindergarten here. By the end of the year I know he was able to write a full sentence.

Yeah I feel the same. My 5 year old dd will be done with Kindergarten in June and is kind of behind in her writing but it doesn't bother me because I want her to learn at her own pace. She is a good speller though but is bad at writing and sentence structure.

Most kindergarten classes I've been familiar with for the last 10-15 years have worked on that kind of thing. As a previous poster mentioned, they have also kept journals. That's pretty standard for kindergarten as far as I know.

My oldest did this. In 2nd grade he is writing "books" (to him they are books) several paragraphs and some illustrations too.

Kindergarten here as well. At my DD school they test you prior to K. If you do not know your letters and numbers they will not let you start K.

We took her to WDW during K and she had to keep a journal and present it to the class.

we homeschool, so we don't have a set time frame where they have to do a certain thing by a certain age, I try to let things occur naturally, I have a general time frame though, so that if something isnt progressing I can address it. with that said, my dd started writing stories and songs at about age 5, my ds is a little later, probably 6+ ish, first grade he is writing stories and sentences.
