valet service?

We use valet whenever possible and love the DDE discount with that....but over this past weekend DH turned and asked me to ask my "board people" what the norm was, since no one is doing cartwheels over our measly couple o bucks!

We usually tip $3 for a quick, friendly retrieval and $2 for average service.

What frosts me a bit is that some WDW valets are pushing for tipping on both ends. We got quite a few speeches from the parkers about what they were going to do for us, then a bit of lingering.

Sorry--no way! Tipping on pick up is the standard for valet and I don't see a strong justification for changing it!

I tip two dollars, and I do tip on pickup and dropoff.

Two dollars each way, a bit more for exceptional service.

Now, that said, here's an interesting twist. (Sorry to hijack...)

About a month ago I met a friend :wave2: at the AKL for cocktails. They valets never moved my car. They left it parked under the carport by the front door the entire time I was inside. So, should I have tipped? I did tip at dropoff. But no one actually brought the car to me, the person at the desk simply handed me the keys. No one opened the door or anything, it just seemed that there was no one to tip. What would you have done?

We always tip about 15-20% of the total valet cost. Usually amounts to be about $2 wherever we go.

We do NOT tip on drop off. I have never heard of that until this thread. They have not preformed a service yet, therefore do not deserve a tip IMO. It would be like pre-tipping at a restaurant.

Which leads me to this, I would definitely have not tipped in the case where they didn't even park your car. I would've taken the keys and left w/o doing anything else.

At least $2, on pickup of your vehicle.

:wave2: I miss AKL. :(

I'm not entirely sure what DH does, because he's the one who always takes care of valets, but I know he gives at least $3.

In your case, I don't think you owed a tip. They should have tipped you since they got the pleasure of watching over your Sky! :teeth:

$2 to $3 when I get the vehicle back. I too once had a night where my vehicle never got parked, but it sat in the same spot at the BC where I got out of it. Another time at the BWV's one valet made out my ticket and then turned around and handed the keys to another valet who was on his way to retrive a car.

If I am paying $8 bucks for someone to park my car, sorry but I am not tipping anymore than $2 and *only* on retrieval.

$3 on drop off and pick up. Everywhere I've ever been the tipping has been on both ends. The guy who parks my car is probably not the guy who is going to pick it up so it seems fair to me. Also, he has my car. I want him happy!

If you are a DVC member staying on points or have DDE and are dining at the resort, valet parking is free. I can't remember the last time we actually paid for it. Personally I think it should also be a "perk" for CL guests.

we have been tipping $2 each way....lately though it seems a few times at AKL and BWI it took forever to get the car.....

I consider myself to be significantly more generous than average when it comes to tips in general. But I never tip on drop-off and would only tip more that $2 on pick if the valet provides unusually good service. Tipping a total of $4 or more to the valets seems way out of line in terms of $/work performed comapred to other tipped positions.

I think the majority of people are still tipping $1 on pick up only, with more and more tipping $2.
