My husband an I have been considering getting "real" cell phones for a while; we currently use tracfone, and they have been perfect for us, but they're difficult to text on, and that's what we've been doing more and more of with the people we talk to most. My Mom has AT&T wireless with the option to add lines for $10/month, and she's offered 2 lines to us (with us paying the extra, of course). What we're having a hard time figuring out is phone price - since it's an existing contract that we'd just be adding lines to, do we qualify for the promo prices they offer to new customers or do we pay the full price of the phones? The answer to this will make a big difference in which phones are possibilities for us.

Anyone done this before who knows?

Thanks!

It should be:

20.00 for 2 extra lines
10.00 for insurance on both
30.00 for unlimited texting
20.00 for internet (if you have added the unlimited text package)

:dance3: The cost of whichever phones you choose & maybe an increase in minutes & any other extras you might want to add would then need added in, but that should be close as we just added one DD 17 & upgraded the other DD 15! Also ask about any discounts, as we got one for DD 17 working at Mickey D's. Best wishes to you. princess::wizard:

We have AT&T and have added several family members. You will qualify for all the promo prices, but keep in mind that you'll also have a one time activation fee for each phone (I think it's $18 per phone). You (or rather, your mom) will also be signing a new two year contract for each line, so you will be comitting to this for two years. Finally, each additional line is $9.99 per month, but there are some additional taxes on top of that. It winds up being closer to $13 or $14 per month by the time you add in all the taxes.

Still, though, it's worked out well for us and we would recommend it.

We were able to negotiate the activation fee so we didn't pay that for any of our phones (we signed up for 4 phones) - just ask!! If they say no, then ask a manager.

Further about the activation fee...when you're getting a new phone to replace one you already have, if it uses a SIM card, just pop your old SIM card into your new phone. Voila, no activation fee.

I think I went 3 phones with the same SIM card and no $18 fees...last phone switch I decided to use the new card, and I was charged.

Hubby was actually told about this handy dandy trick by an AT&T person on the phone!:rotfl:

Definitely try to negotiate on the activation fees. We've been w/At&t (and all the other names they had before) for way over 10 years. Last year went in & negotiated on 2 higher end phones/activation/and accessories. Also, check on discounts. I get 10% off monthly fees because I'm a teacher.

I know that trick well. I have not bought a phone from the ATT store in so long that been eligible for a upgrade for 6 years. Except when I lost my phone had to get a new sim card.:lmao::lmao::lmao:

We are doing this next week for our stepdad. Activation fee is 26.00 I believe and we were told that only the added line would require a new 2 year contract Ours will not be affected until we are due to upgrade. We will get the promo price but the saleslady was really pushing the extras. All my stepdad needs is a decent phone so we might get by pretty good.
