at&t and iphone

For me, I would only consider an iPhone after Verizon gets it which rumor has it will be this summer and then I can only get it as long as where I work supports and works out any security issues with it. We can only use blackberries right now as they are more secure than the iphone and can be wiped remotely if you lose your phone or if it is stolen.

My BF has an iPhone with AT&T and I can't say that the service is that great and he can be sitting on his couch on the phone, not moving and the call drops.

Do you use your personal phone for work or vice versa?

I dont see how your company can dictate what cell you get for your personal use.

I think what BVC means is that most companies have security protocols when it comes to access of their email, internal systems, intranet etc. blackberries offer a higher level of security than the iphone.

i have both a blackberry (for work) and an iphone (personal). I prefer the iphone but know that i can not access the same number of things for work on my iphone.

I LOVE my iPhone, however I absolutely LOATHE AT&T. But since I get a corporate discount on the data plan (and 25% off accessories, dedicated Laptop Connect support line), I put up with them. For me its cheaper to keep 'em. :lmao:

In WDW, my 3G was absolutely crappy at the AKL and CSR. However at EPCOT and MK resort area, my 3G signal was amazing!

That is it exactly. I work for a defense contractor and all corporate issue phones are Crackberries.

I live right in the middle of most of those places you mentioned and frequent them often. I don't have the iphone yet but plan on getting one in December. I'm with Alltel (our region didn't get taken by Verizon and service is AWFUL). My fiance however has one and has great reception everywhere but my parents house.

I live in Richmond and travel throughout Virginia and into NC and SC often. I don't have an iPhone yet, but we haven't had any problems with ATT service since we moved here! There's a few random dead spots, but they are so small and I can basically walk out of them into service. So not a big deal at all! Funny thing, one was just outside the door of the hospital where my OB is located and where I delivered my girls. It was for about 20 feet and then it was fine. It was weird.

We've never had a coverage problem with ATT. We've been all over the country with them and have never had a lack of phone service/reception. I know you're getting the 1400 minutes for the same prices as Verizon's 750, but are you also including that each Iphone must have a data plan, which is $30 per month per phone. I love my Iphone and I'm sure you will too. The only other phone that I'm hearing great things about is the new Android. Compare that with the Iphone to see which is best for you.
We do know that the $30 dollar a month is required, and even with both iphones and having an added $60 to the plan it's still works about to be about $10 less than what we would be with verizon.
I love my iphone, I've had it for about a year and now don't think I could live without it! I have good reception for the most part. There is one spot that is near my house in a valley that usually drops my calls. Frustrating that it is so close to home (and in a major metro area) but other than that I've always had very good coverage, including when traveling. We just drove from MO to FL in March, used it as our GPS with a downloaded app and had constant coverage the entire way.
Is the GPS app monthly or just a flat charge. We want a GPS, but this would be a way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.
Long post warning!

First - I can definitely tell you that I have had nothing less than stellar service in Charlotte (where I live), Greensboro, Raleigh, and Myrtle Beach - all of which I visit frequently. I've also had no trouble what so ever at WDW... even in large crowds... even in July/August.

When I had Verizon I never had service ANYWHERE. I also had horrible customer service experiences. Multiple horrible ones. I'll save those unless you really want to know :)

As for the amazingness that is AT&T, let me tell you this story - which is the reason I will never go to another phone company.

In February I was eating brunch with my Mom, and I had been wearing pants with cargo pockets. Stupid me didn't check my pocket to make sure that I had my iPhone before we walked out, and I ended up losing what felt like a limb. I was completely stricken! I was hoping that it had just been lost around my house somewhere, but just in case I texted "cash reward if this phone is found! Please call ##########" (DH's number), and received a phone call which was a hang up. I called the number over and over until they finally turned my phone off.

I didn't have MobileMe set up, which I definitely will always have now, but MobileMe can wipe a phone of it's data, and can also track a phone if it's been lost or stolen. Since I didn't have this at the time, AT&T couldn't help me. They sympathized with me, though, and since it's not like they could just give me a new phone, they credited my account until I could get a new one (which was great - most companies won't offer that for people under contract... I would know. Verizon sold me a phone with a known glitch and refused to take responsibility when it messed up... and I still paid for the last 18 months on that contract).
---> Also, on the note of privacy, if an incorrect password is input 10 times the phone automatically wipes itself. Wish I had this set up when I lost it! Not that I had anything private, per se, but the fact that people were looking at pictures of myself, DH, and my cats just made me feel violated.

My friend had an old 2G and sent it to me as a place holder until I could afford a new phone. AT&T credited my account so that I didn't have to pay for a new sim card and upgraded me to free shipping.

Finally I had saved enough to get a new iPhone 3GS - which is even better than the 3G by far - and AT&T was once again very easy to work with. iTunes also restored my phone completely so that none of my pictures, phone numbers, or settings, or ANYTHING from the old phone. I loved that so much more than I can even say. Once my 3GS was here, it was like my phone had just upgraded itself and nothing had changed! AT&T gave me so many account credits, too - it really helped me save for the new phone.

AT&T's 3G is also faster than Verizon's. I can't stand how slow playing with my mom's droid is. It's also SUPER heavy... the iphone is surprisingly light!
I think it's awesome that they were so willing to work with you on your situation. We are SOOO dissatisfied with verizons customer service. i hate going in the store and getting hims and haws about questions I asked and just getting talked in circle or getting the answer of it's just depends on what suits your needs. When we went in att the other day they answer every question with actual answers and not just talking in circles. They were very friendly and didn't seem annoyed by me asking hundreds of thousands of questions lol we are looking at the 3gs my thoughts are it's cheaper than the comparable itouch!
You may find the majority of the posts here speaking in favor of the iPhone (mainly because of the apps -- particularly, there's an app out there for this very website).

I'm certain the iPhone is all that (and then some). However, AT&T has been criticized in the media for maxing-out their data capabilities (read: you might have some slow web-surfing on one of their smartphones).

That aside, if you find yourself in the position of not wanting to switch carriers, but still wanting a smartphone with apps, Verizon's BlackBerry Storm 2 might be worth a look-see...

As for me, I've been with VZW for many years, and as soon as Apple decides to roll-out a version of the iPhone compatible with Verizon's network, I'll be checking it out.

The main purpose is att has a much better deal, and I get a discount at work. We used to get a discount through verizon but it ended in february. They claimed they were losing to much money that the program had gotten to big. I just said whatever...

Thanks everyone for your responces. It seems like the main problem with coverage is in valleys which isn't a big difference between any of the other companys. So far it's looking pretty good.

DH and I both have one and love them! We had Verizon with a 20% discount and paid to get out of our contract and ended up with a %15 discount with AT&T, not bad. I held out for a really long time, in the end DH wore me down and I gave in. Excellent choice. I absolutely love it and could not be happier. We have not had any service issues and have had our phone for nearly a year now.

There is nothing close to the iPhone. My original 2g iPhone is still more advance then any other cell phone that is not an iPhone and it looks like I bought it 2 weeks ago. If you haven't gotten an iPhone, stop waisting your own time with anything else; seriously.

Although I wish AT&T was cheaper, I can say the coverage is terrific. I'm now on my 2nd iPhone (Upgrade to 3g) and AT&T data speeds are better.

For vacationing, you can rent iPhones now. Found it on familylink mobile.

In short, spend the extra per month and go with AT&T/iPhone. You can talk and web at the same time with GSM; never with CDMA (Verizon). :hippie:

There's a rumor that the new Iphone will be released 6/7, if that helps any. My contract just expired with Sprint and I was going to get the Iphone before our Disney trip next week. My brother convinced me to hold out until 6/7. He's used his abroad, all over the country and has had rare problems with coverage.

In WDW, my 3G was absolutely crappy at the AKL and CSR. However at EPCOT and MK resort area, my 3G signal was amazing!

Funny you should mention that -- time was Sprint/Nextel service was the "way to go" on WDW (no signal problems, whatsoever). However, I am noticing on TV that Disney and Verizon have some new arrangement that involves park-specific apps, etc. which leads me to wonder if VZW is the "must have" equipment when on WDW?

I love my Iphone. My son in law says he has calls drop between home (MD) and work (VA). I love the apps and I download books to read on it. I have a Sony Reader (will never buy one again-horrible cs and product) but love reading on the iphone! I'm waiting for the new iphone and the next edition of the Ipad to upgrade!:lovestruc:goodvibes

As someone else has said, rumor is the next gen (4G) iphone will be out this summer.

Rumors also are saying the new one will have many upgrades from the current gen model too (multitasking, camera on front of camera for Skype, HD screen, slightly different case design, longer battery life etc).

So you may want to wait to for the new one before deciding.

HTH.

Thanks everyone for all of your great help!!

It will be october before we do anything as that's when DH's contract is up. we will have to pay to break mine, but we'll save it in price difference in just a couple months. I'm liking hearing about a new version coming out... I can't wait to hear all about it!!!

I have a question if anyone knows the answer about verizon's contracts. We have a family plan with 3 phones. I am the primary. DS comes due in July, I come due in August and DH comes due in December. We want to go to AT&T and get iphones. Can DH take over my verizon contract as primary and DS and I can go to AT&T in August? If DH takes over my contact is it a new 2 year contract or will it expire in December? Why do they have to make this so difficult?????

I disagree, my wife loves her iPhone so I switched from my Android based Sprint phone too ATT. One week was all I could stand, slow network, outdated phone, which it is. Yea the iPhone was nice when it came out but it pales in comparison to the competition that is out thete now.
