We just returned yesterday from a wondrful 7 night stay at the Poly and a 3 night cruise on the Wonder. We just outran hurricaine Wilma and we had hot sunshine every day!

I had requested Fiji with hopes of getting a newly renovated room but they placed us in Tokelau. I must say it was wonderful! We had a first floor room (1930) and it was quite spacious. I didn't mind one bit that it was not one of the newly renovated rooms. The location was fabulous. We were close to the TTC and the GCH. The quiet pool was very close.

The staff at the front desk were very accomodating to us as well. I was travelling with a group of 16 and we were in 5 separate rooms. When I arrived they had us in different longhouses for some reason. The ressies must not have been linked together... The front desk worked very hard to get us all in Tokelau and all on the first floor. A big thank you to them!

Went to Captain Cooks on our first night. Got the refillable mug. My husband came over to me and said," I probably shouldn't show you this but you HAVE to see this thing!" He proceeds to show me the most GIANT cockroach I have ever seen! It was on the floor near the refrigerator/counter corner. It must have been three inches long. I was grossed out of course and I couldn't eat any food there after that.... I am just hoping that they spray for bugs in there! :)

We did eat dinner in Ohana and breakfast 3 times at Kona. (I just kept telling myself that the roaches were NOT upstairs! :sunny: ) Ohana was FABULOUS and the potatoes were out of this world yummy! Soooo good! I would also say that the Banannas Foster was also one of the best things we had while at the world. I would go back again for those 2 items if I could. Don't miss this place! We also just loved Kona! We only had breakfast there but it was so yummy! I had the Tonga Toast once and the pinapple pancakes twice. The coffee was TDF! I would definately go back!

You can't beat the location and beauty of this resort! This place is a winner. ( I also am a huge fan of the Boardwalk. )I must say that the Poly is fabulous for those with young kids. (Ours were 3 and 5) The zero entry pool was wonderful for my children. They would have stayed just there for hours....

Don't hesitate to stay here... You will LOVE it! :cool1:

Thank you so much for the great review! We are going in December and I originally requested Samoa and am now hemming and hawing over changing the request to Fiji for a new room - good to hear even the ones that haven't had a makeover are still great! I will probably still change the request but will be happy with whatever we get!

Thanks again! I'm glad you had a great trip :sunny:

We came back from the POLY after being there the end of Sept and begining of Oct. We also stayed in the Tokelau with a free upgrade to a view of the castle! fantastic! My DH and I are in our 50s and loved it too.

the roach your DH saw was a palmetto bug. We didn't see any ourselves, but you find them all over the south.

Glad you had a good trip.

I agree that what it might have been is a palmetto bug (seen them many times in WDW)

What was your room number in Tokelau Redbudlover? Were you in the corner room 2914 or 3914?

Thanks for the review hygienejean.

We are from Maine and I've never seen any bug like it! It was interesting to say the least.... :) Glad to know it wasn't a **** roach!

I'm glad to hear you say that. We're going to the Poly in 2 weeks. I have requested Samoa, Tokelau, or Tahiti, none of which have been recently renovated. I've decided that being in a "new" room really won't matter. I know that I will enjoy myself because I'm on vacation at the Poly in Disneyworld! Glad you had a wonderful time.

Thanks for the report! I'm looking forward to staying there in Feb and your report made it seem a little closer (expecially with all this rain we are having!)

I grew up in Florida. We always said the bigger the roach the cleaner it was. It is the little nasty roach that is living off the dirt. The big roaches are probably palmetto bugs getting away from the rain. Now...all that being said...they are still FREAKY and I probably would not have eaten there either!

I am glad you had such a great trip. We are staying at GF in December and already have Kona on our breakfast list just for the coffee!

We will be at the Poly on Friday for nine nights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your reveiw has got my mouth watering. Im sooo excited-Cant wait to go to MNSSHP & the Food & Wine fest.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the review!

Glad you had a great time...the POLY, my first and STILL my favorite!

Marthasor..definately request Samoa and Fiji. Hopefully you will get one of them. Remember, just becuase you are requesting it, doesn't mean you will get the longhouse. The past 2 years, we requested Samoa and Fiji, and got Tokelau. This year, we got Fiji, when we finally were not getting our hopes up. No matter where you stay, it will be excellent. :sunny:

The worst thing is that those palmetto bugs can sort of fly/jump and if they land in your hair or get in your face ........freak out time!!!

We returned last night from 4 nights at the Poly. I decided to NOT request anything to see if my Disney luck would hold. We got Tokelau, 2939 and absolutely LOVED it. I would have to say, my only complaint was the ONE morning that the room next to us got a wake up call... and it was as if the phone in our room was ringing. Fortunately I had been warned of that happening, and was able to fall back asleep.

Next trip I think I am going to try concierge, lagoon view... would LOVE to try a room in the Hawaii bldg!

We were there for Wilma (all, what, 12 hours of her!?!?!?) My daughter and I went out and played in the storm. Had a blast! From what they told us, the characters were in the lobbies to give the resort guests SOMETHING to do... but we made our own fun. The funniest part was when we walked over to the GF Spa... it was rough going, but when we came out... it was sunny! Time to head to the parks! :goodvibes

Not to get too technical, but I thought that "palmetto bug" was just a fancy name in the south for a cockroach. Are they really different bugs?

I had one of those things jump up and land on my chest while I was eating at Teppanyaki in Epcot. I flipped out and jumped up so fast the chair flew out from under me and dented the wooden wall in back of me. I heard someone at the next grill/table say "palmetto bug" and then this older gentleman with a Texas drawl said "That's the funniest name for a cockroach I ever heard." I could have died, I swear. I was shaking like crazy the rest of the meal. I don't know what they are but I don't want them on me ever again. I have returned to Teppanyaki since though... I try not to think about my little big friend.
