The Astra Zeneca vaccine has been approved by Health Canada with a 62% efficacy rate. Lots of posters in the CBC are not impressed. I’m pleased. It’s old technology in this vaccine so we know long term effects and 62% is actually just fine for efficacy. Hopefully another tool in the Covid arsenal. Anything that will get me to Disney sooner rather than later.

The 62% is kind of misleading as well. I think it’s actually much higher at preventing serious illness. I can’t think of what it was, but remember it being much higher.

I am just happy we'll have another option, that will maybe speed things up a bit. Depends on how quickly it can get here I guess. I do like that it doesn't need refrigeration like the others so far, so it will be easier for use in some areas.

I'll take any of them, just let's go!

I get that this is a good thing in terms of speed of getting this done. BUT, I am like many others and would prefer a vaccine that uses the new technology. I wonder if by the time they get around to my group we will be given a choice.

The thing that is positive with the the old technology is it is known to be safe in the long term. We have no data of the long term safety of the new technology vaccines. That will take decades to accumulate.

If given the choice (which I don’t expect to be given), I’d choose the old technology every time.

I'm the opposite. There are so many more ingredients in the old stuff that a reaction is more likely

I have no opinion on which would be better to get, as long as it works and helps get things back to "normal" I will take what they give me.

I am glad to hear (listening to the briefing this morning) that there are 500,000 doses to arrive in the "next few days" and another 1.5M in the coming months. So that is another 1M people who can get vaccinated... My parents are 74, so too young for the Ontario roll out for another few months, yet they both have health issues so I will be very happy when they can get their doses.

I'll take it. It's a lot better than the zero percent protection I am walking around with now. From what I have been reading in the news and scientists are working on, we will need a booster down the line anyway with the different vaccines.

This is a well written article which spells out quite a bit about the three vaccines.

1. What kinds of COVID-19 vaccines are available?

Pfizer: mRNA

Moderna: mRNA

AstraZeneca: adenovirus-based

2. How effective are the COVID-19 vaccines?

Pfizer: 95 per cent

Moderna: 94.1 per cent

AstraZeneca: 62 per cent

3. How are the COVID-19 vaccines stored?

Pfizer: -70°C

Moderna: -25°C to -15°C

AstraZeneca: 2°C to 8°C

4. How many doses of each COVID-19 vaccine are required?

Pfizer: two

Moderna: two

AstraZeneca: two

5. Who can take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Pfizer: 16+

Moderna: 18+

AstraZeneca: 18+

6. How many doses is Canada getting?

Pfizer: 40 million doses

Moderna: 40 million doses

AstraZeneca: 20 million doses

This made me very happy to see *** Pfizer: 16+ ***
My granddaughter is 16 yrs old and works part time at 2 different fast food restaurants... (saving for University in 2 years).

I can't tell you how many people have been rude , ignorant and just plain &**%$#%^& regarding wearing a simple face mask to the staff in these restaurants,,, seriously makes my blood boil.

Am I the only one that thinks that the efficacy is pretty low? The other two are 95% or so, so 62% is not very comforting.

From the CBC article I read (bolding is mine):
The department's regulators concluded the shot has an efficacy rate of 62 per cent and have authorized it for use in all adults 18 and older.

While it's less effective than the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines at preventing infection, the shot is 100 per cent effective in preventing the severe outcomes of COVID-19 — including serious illness, hospitalizations and death — the regulators said.

and

And while the AstraZeneca product was found to be less effective than the Pfizer and Moderna shots already approved, Sharma said there's no doubt that a dose of this vaccine is better than no dose at all.

Still better than the flu shot
She cautioned Canadians against comparing efficacy rates of the various vaccine products, saying that in the areas that matter most — preventing serious illness, reducing hospitalizations and curbing the number of deaths — "all these vaccines are good."

"If you look across all the clinical trials of the tens of thousands of people who were involved, the number of cases of people who died from COVID-19 that got vaccines was zero," Sharma said.

"The number of people that were hospitalized because their COVID-19 disease was so severe was zero. The number of people that died because of an adverse event or effect of the vaccine was zero."

She also noted that the AstraZeneca vaccine's efficacy rate is actually higher than that of other common vaccine products — including the flu shot.

No it’s not low. First of all it’s hard to compare the two vaccines cause they weren’t tested along side each other. I heard a report that cases were surging higher when they were testing the Oxford vaccine, compared to the others. So that could affect the 62% vs 95%. Basically the Oxford could have been higher if tested under exactly the same conditions. Also the Oxford was 100% effective at preventing serious disease and death.

they are finding real world in the UK it is better than 62%. Closer to 80% actually they are noticing. And also it prevents more severe illness. It can be kept in a fridge and it is $2.50 a dose not $40 a dose. I would say that it will be a great addition for 18-50 year olds who have nearly zero chance of dying from covid. The older crowd should likely get the other vaccines. I am 38 so I don't care what one I get, in fact I would be fine not getting it at all but there is some emerging evidence that vaccinated people are less likely to transmit covid so as I work in a health care field I will get it if only to help to prevent the risk passing it to my patients who are still waiting in line for theirs.

That is exactly how I feel.

Ontario will not offer Astra Zeneca to seniors as there is not enough data. Ontario is now looking at the data to see if we can delay second doses and get more people their first shot!

i don’t like the delaying of the second shot. There is enough unknown, about how long the vaccines are efficient for to begin with . The US/Faucci looked at this and didn’t . It just makes me really nervous

They have not made the decision yet. THey are going back to the federal advisory group for the data on this.
