Hi all.

My travel agent is recommending this place for our stay on the big island next year (first time to Hawaii).

Just thought I'd get people's opinion. I did a little reading on it, and I'm not thrilled that it's not on the beach.

If you've been there, what do you think?

We were at Aston Colony Villas at Waikoloa this summer. It is also not on the beach, but the villas were gorgeous and it is a VERY quick drive to A-bay beach and a lightly longer drive to Hapuna Beach, which is one of the best beaches I have ever been on. I believe the two resorts are very close to each other, so you would have the same drive time. Since we had a car anyway, it was not an issue for us, and I think on the Big Island you do absolutely NEED a car.

The Shores is a condominium development. They will not have management on site. There are several condo developments in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area. There are also two hotels - the Hilton and the Marriott. The Marriott is beachfront as are the Kolea homes. The Hilton and Hali'i Kai are oceanfront but don't have a beach. Kolea and Hali'i Kai (in addition to the Marriott and Hilton will have management onsite).

If you are looking for beachfront, you are looking at the wrong island. The Big Island does not have many beaches. Some of the best beaches are a 10 minute drive north of Waikoloa Beach Resort.

I personally love Waikoloa Beach Resort and own a couple of properties there. Let me know if you have any other questions. Tripadvisor is also a good source of info.

The Big Island has some of my favorite beaches. Hapuna beach is great for lounging and boogie boarding. Mauna Kea is BEAUTIFUL- do not miss it, but get there early because parking is limited to first come first serve. The beach by the Mauna Lani is also really nice for snorkeling and is less crowded than the other popular snorkeling spots. A day trip over to to Hilo and the Botanical gardens and the various waterfalls is sooo worth it.

Have fun. We rented a condo there last year and loved it.

Check out www.wizardpub.com , click on Big Island and drill down the arial views of the resort, then you can see where it is. Their are wonderful locations in and around Waikaloa. Look for the "real gems" or the "solid gold values".
