anyone know why DVC changed the rules for the associate?

now they can only make or cancel reservations, transfer, bank or borrow points. Nothing else.

before they got some of the discounts - restauarants and shopping.

Did they have a member card? If they didn't how did they get the discounts?

I agree -- my DH is only an associate on our account and he doesn't get a member card. We have to show my member card to get the AP discounts and some other things.

Anyone - owner, associate, most renters, etc. - will get a KTTW card that says DVC member on it and by default/accident, normally get a lot of the discounts. But associates have not been able to get their own member card at least since we joined in 2008.

I've been a member over 10 years and don't think associates ever got discounts on their own.

When we bought March '09 there was no indication that I (the associate) could get any discounts without having DH and his member card right there with me.

joined in 1993 and added my brother as an associate in 1995. then the only thing that the member got that the associate did not - was the 25% discount on DVC rooms.

they got everything else. Of course when the annual pass discount was announced it stated that there would be NO discount for associates.

this is what member services and the person who told me how to get my brother added as an associate to my membership.

so the other discounts they could use. He did not get his own member card. So he would be using the ID card (that says DVC member).

He was getting discounts based on staying in a points room, his key said "DVC Member" but if he would not be staying on points, he would not get member discounts as an associate. It really has nothing to do with being an associate but rather being a guest in a points room. For example, if I stayed at CBR, I could still use my member ID to get DVC dining discounts. He would not be able to do that as an associate.

I'm the associate member, my wife is the member with the name on the deed. DVC sent us 2 cards when we joined in 1999, but both have her name on them. In fact last year one of the cards got lost and they sent us 2 new ones, again with only her name on the cards.

If you are not on the deed at all they should not have but I do know of other similar instances where a non member (technically) got a membership card.

Pat, this has always been the rule. However, they have tightened the enforcement on some of the perks over the last few years. In the past most any guest got essentially any perk other than the 25% cash discount.

The last I read it still states in the rules that guests of owners may receive some perks. I take that to mean they may or may not and it doesn't clarify which ones. That is a part of why you are supposed to notify if you have rented the reservation since renters are not in the same category as your guests.

As I've reported before, my wife got a membership card from our first membership which was listed only in my name. Granted this was after I had added her as an associate and we had bought another contract jointly (different UY, same resort). But she clearly got a card with the original membership number on it for which she was never technically an owner.
