Assigned Roommates

So I'm not going down this route for my DCP but I know many people that are going down this route and have friends considering doing this as well, letting Disney randomly pick their roommates. They worry it won't work out or that they'll all end up arguing. I think even if you pick them ahead of time, there could still be problems (I love my future roomies but 6 girls in one apartment...I'm not naive, I'm sure we may have some issues).

So I'm wondering, if you had assigned roomies, how did it work out? Anyone do assigned roomies one time and pick them yourself another? Pros and cons?

When I went down I had picked 3 other roommates for a 2 bedroom and checked in to find out we got a 3 bedroom. We ended up with two Australian roommates.

I loved all of them. That being said, as you said, you're going to have problems with every one of them. Some more significant than others so regardless, unless you're lucky, expect some problem-solving to happen. I picked roommates who I knew didn't care to party or drink or whatnot like myself and I loved them but I'm so happy I was put with the two other girls who were much more outgoing and liked to go out and have a good time. I never went with them but they were extremely respectful girls and incredibly mature and I loved meeting them, it really helped me gain a better perspective of other people's personalities.

It's really just the luck of the draw. If you hate them, you're going to be working most of the time anyway so it's unlikely you'll see them very often. If you don't like any of your roommates, makes friends elsewhere. Most of my friends I met through FB beforehand and I still talk to them everyday and we hung out most out of everyone.

I went down knowing my the roommate I roomed with. We had met on facebook and since we lived about 30 min from each other, we met up a few times before deciding if we wanted to room together.

We then paired up with another two girls for our 2 bedroom randomly when we got there and it worked out great for us because we all were pretty similar and didn't have issues.

It was when all of us but my roommate accepted our extensions that things went a little sour. I had a girl I worked with as my new roommate and while we got along okay, it upset the balance and she and my other roommates that I'd been with got really close and I kind of got put in the background.

It wasn't ideal but I'd lived with roommates in college that I was thrown together with at random, so I was used to living with strangers. The great thing is my Disney roommates and I are still friends. My first roommate that lives near me still was a part of my wedding party and we hang out every now and then. I also talk to one of the other roommates who was in the other room quite often on Facebook and I'd say we've stayed fairly close.

On the other hand, my friend who did the program the year before me didn't have luck with random roommates, and ended up moving a few times. So everyone has different experiences. I think in my situation we were all over 21 and knew we didn't want to deal with major drama and laid out the rules from the get go and that helped a lot.

I did the CP a million years ago when the only way you might have ended up with roommates you picked in advance was to show up and wait in line together. But finding people ahead of time was not easy because Facebook didn't exist (yes, that long ago!) Anyway, as a result, most people I did the CP with had randomly assigned roommates unless you showed up with people you already knew from your own school.

My random roommates and I all got along for the most part with the typical roommate issues and most of the people I knew on the program had the same experience. I get the appeal of knowing your roommates versus random strangers but sometimes I think it is actually easier to live with people you aren't already close to.

My DD is a current CP....She went random and was placed in an 8-person room with one other random girl and 6 who had met on FB. She has become very close friends with three of them, including the other random girl. She gets along with them all- they just don't hang out as much. There has been the normal tension over chores and food but nothing crazy! It has been an amazing experience and she says she would do it the same way again....She felt the FB page was too fake (and frightening!)

I'm a current CP and went random, and I do not recommend it. I thought that a lot of people wouldn't pick their roommates either, so I would have a good chance of getting good people. I ended up getting placed in a 6 person apartment with 5 foreigners who were already there a week when I got there. When i first moved in we had one girl from Italy, one from Germany, one from Botswana, one from South Africa, and my roommate was from Norway. My roommate ended up moving out my second week, and the girl from Germany asked to move in. Now she and I get along great, it's actually worked out really well, but the rest of them I don't like too much.

The girl from South Africa is a very hostile person and is just rude in general, also she put the AC on 100 (!!!) in the middle of August, and when we talked to her just kept putting it on 80 or 90 so that i would wake up in the middle of the night sweating. I've had issues with them taking up all the space in the fridge and then taking my stuff out completely, and just in general lots of issues.

The thing is they haven't really done anything I can complain to them about, and for me to move out I would have to go through roommate remediation first, which would not work out very well for me.

To be fair, i know people who picked their roommates and hated them, and those who went random and loved them. I work at MK so I usually get back late at night, so I don't interact with them too much. I was lucky to be placed in an awesome location where I've made amazing friends, so the only time I really notice my roommates is when I'm trying to sleep in the morning or on my days off.

That was a lot longer than I planned lol but if you guys have any other questions don't hesitate to ask!
