I made my ADR's this morning. Paid up front for Spirit of Aloha, but now see we may be able to use TIW if we go that route. Can someone explain how that works (ie. can I somehow get refunded some money if I go with TIW)? They made me pay in advance for the Saturday night Cat. 1 Seating.

I'm mulling over TIW vs. the Deluxe DDP due to the sheer number of character meals we are planning. Likely will go with TIW.

When we used the TIW card for the spirit of aloha show, we paid the reduced price upfront. We were limited to the late showing, if I remember correctly.

The discount on the spirit of aloha show paid for the cost of the TIW card for our family.

I'm sure you can call to have the discount credited to your CC.

If planning several Character Meals, especially with several children the DDP can save you money.

Planned to do the TIW in August just before we leave for Vero Beach if we do it. I definitely have to do some math. Doing VB in Aug, then WDW in December, and one more time likely before the TIW would expire.

Kids are 6&8 and we loved the DDP last time for the convenience. Right now I'm looking to see if TIW is something that activates the minute you buy it.

Right now, we have Spirit of Aloha, 1900 Park Fare (D), Askerhus (D), BOG (D), Ohana (B), ESPN Club (L), Biergarten (D) BOMA (D), Kona (B), and The Edison (D) booked in December

Doing at least 1 meal at VB Wind and Waves...and see TIW is accepted at the bars there.

In 2016, I was told that I could show the card at restaurant check-in and have the discount credited to my card. We ended up changing our minds and canceled the resrvation. So can't comment if it worked or not.

For HDDR, you get a refund of the discount when you pick up your tickets. You cannot get the discount up front. I would expect this show to work the same.

I have not used the TIW card for either show, but from their brochure:

Pre-Paid Reservations and Dinner Shows: For any participating Walt Disney World® Resort restaurant where reservations are pre-paid, make sure to request the Tables in Wonderland discount at the time of booking for discount to be applied. A valid Tables in Wonderland card must then be shown at time of ticket pick-up to retain the discount. A refund can also be given at ticket pick-up if the Tables in Wonderland discount was not applied at time of booking.Tables in Wonderland discounts for show times are subject to change without notice.

It also states late show only for either show.

Thank you. Appears if I do go ahead and get TIW, I could at least try by asking when we pick up tickets.

I actually forgot to bring out the TIW when I picked up ticket at Bell Services at AKV where I was staying. When at the show, we ordered some alcholic drnks not included in the regular price and when I showed the TIW card when paying for that, the waitress asked if I had gotten the discount when paying for the show, answered no, and she then had the cashier apply a credit to our room account. Could not ask for better service than that.

Do not know how long it has been since you have seen the show but we went in mid-May and had not been for about four years. They have a new flame dancer for the climax presentation of the show. I have seen many Luau shows in different places including Hawaii. The flame dancer the Poly show now has is, by far, the best I have ever seen.

We do a lot of the same restaurants (also w 2 kids) - and have done TiW for the last several years running. Often I use the calculator when we come back to second guess whether I should have done DDP or DxDP (we do a lot of TS), and it confirms that the DDP is not for us.

One year we did Mickey's Backyard BBQ and I had forgotten to bring our TiW card to get the discount taken off. We were able to get the discount the next night by bringing the receipt and TiW card to guest services at MK - it was over $50 off, so it was worth the extra trip and standing in line. At the time, I was told that only guest services in a park could get the discount if you were no longer at the restaurant. So yes, bringing the card to the dinner is also fine (this is how it's done at CRT, which also has a pre-pay).

Thanks all. Sat down and did some math and estimating last night, and it would appear TIW is the way to go unless I'm missing something. My wife's worry is that QS for lunches/breakfast along with snacks, etc... will add up and it may just be easier to stick with the Deluxe DP for convenience. I do appreciate all the tips and advice. Most of these will be our first time at these restaurants....did BOG for Breakfast and CRT during the xmas party last year along with Garden Grill, 50's diner, Tony's, Olivia's, etc..

I think where the HUGE difference is in the tip being "included", so i'm a strong lean toward TIW

This makes sense now! I booked the HDDR (late show) for our October trip and I paid with a gift card. I told the CM on the phone that I am planning to purchase the TIW when we arrive, since I am not eligible to buy it in advance. She charged me the discounted rate and said that I will simply have to show the card when I pick up our tickets, otherwise I will be "charged" the difference. I'm not sure how that would work if my gift card balance was down to $0 by that point, but it won't matter because I will have my TIW card by then anyways.

I don't know how you're family eats, but when considering the cost of CS meals, you should come out WAY ahead by skipping the DP. I'm currently budgeting $40/day for CS/snacks for myself and my 2 DD's (15 and 13) for our trip in October. We eat breakfast in the room and then a TS meal for dinner. In between, we "graze" so we usually share meals. We order a "main" dish (chicken, pasta, pizza, etc) and then maybe get 1-2 sides (fries, breadsticks, etc) and then the girls share a soda and I either get my own or drink water. It's usually under $25 so that leaves us another $15 for snacks, which we also share. We might share a small popcorn, Dole Whip, or a soft pretzel with cheese, any of which is enough to tide me over between "meals". This is all in addition to things like granola bars, fruit snacks and whatever other snack items we packed in our park bag for the day.

I put together our "comparison" (DP vs OOP) to see if it would work for our upcoming trip. The first thing I did was look at the TS meals that we have planned... Yachtsman (2), HDDR (2), Boma breakfast (1), 50's PTC (1), BOG dinner (2) and the DVC member night at Splitsville. That's (9) TS credits for a 7-night stay. (I counted (1) TS credit for Splitsville because we could eat there anyways, just without the "special event"). Since we are staying 7 nights, we would need the DxDDP to cover all of those meals. We would get an additional (12) credits per person, plus the snack credits and the mugs. Right now, after looking at the menus and picking out what we would realistically order and eat (and I estimated on the high end, including an appetizer and dessert with the TS meals), the cost of those meals comes out to just under $900, taxes and tips included. I also have $400 budgeted for CS meals and snacks which is about $55/day. I plan to keep it around $40 and use the "surplus" at the F&W booths. Ok, so my overall OOP budget is $1300 and as you can see, it will be plenty of food...no skimping here! Now, if we wanted to "keep it simple" and pay with "credits" on the DxDDP, it would cost about $2500...and that does NOT include the tips, which would easily add another $200. On top of that, we would have to try and use up those (12) meal credits PER PERSON (on meals that we normally share) AND we'd have more snacks than we know what to do with. So the way I see it, there is NO reason why I should pay an extra $1400 or so, just so I don't have to "feel" like I am paying with real money.

We did the dining plan when the "kids" were actually "kids" by Disney standards. It was a better deal back then, especially since the girls liked the buffets and character meals. The DP's work for some people/families, but it is important to run the numbers and make sure that you are not grossly overpaying for something that you don't need. If you like the pre-paid convenience, put together a budget and load it onto a Disney gift card. Use that as your "dining card" and just swipe it for each meal. If you scout the menus and prepare yourself, I would almost bet that you will have money leftover at the end of your trip.

That's really what this is coming down to. Our kids are still both "kids" in disney's eyes as it pertains to DP's. That said, I remember being totally unimpressed with the kids selections.

Knowing my kids, we will have Fish 'n Chips every day for lunch. They fell in love with that stand in the world showcase.

Just wanted to clarify, the 18% tip is automatically added to the bill when you get it. It is not like you are getting away without having to tip.

Right.

Please verify my thoughts. For the sake of ease, I'll use whole numbers.

Let's say a dinner at a TIW participating restaurant is 200 for the 4 of us. They would add the 18% gratuity (36 dollars), then take the 20% off, add tax, and add back the gratuity...correct?

So, let's assume 5% tax (for ease).

Bill 200
Gratuity 36
Tax 10
Bill with 20% discount 160
Add back Gratuity and Tax, for total bill of 206?

Correct. Here is an actual bill. We always “plus up” to 20% tip with at least a $1.00 add on.

Not sure how long it's been since you were there, but recent reports say that they are using tilapia instead of cod for those fish and chips. And apparently it's a VERY different taste.

There are online calculators that can help you figure out what is best based on your plans. With TIW there are several resort QS places that give the discount, plus the QS places at AK park. Check out the TIW site for more info.
