Yes, we were quarantined on our 1/19 cruise. Our DD had the norwalk like thing from Tuesday evening, and we were quarantined the rest of the cruise. She was pretty sick Tuesday evening and Wed morning, and my DH had it too, so we wouldn't have been able to do much anyway.

DS had one episode of vomiting Monday evening, and was fine from then on. I never got sick.

They let anyone who wasn't sick move about the ship, but requested that siblings of the sick kid not go to the kids programs. DS and I saw a movie and played shuffleboard, etc.

They did provide ANYTHING you wanted (including alcohol) free of charge to the room.

By Thursday morning when we disembarked, everyone was much better. We went to NASA Thursday and Animal Kingdom Friday and everyone was fine.

So if you have any questions about the quarantine, fire away!

I have always wondered something... When you are quarantined, do they post "gaurds" outside of your room? I've always wondered, since I've seen alot of posts about people who are MAD they can't leave their room, so, COULD they sneak out of their rooms if they wanted to? Or are they watched closely...

Did you have travel insurance? I read from another post that you can be reimbursed if you have travel insurance, and then I read the policy of the insurance included with my documents, and it says it does cover quarantining.

Also, did you go to the infirmary to report you were sick, or did a cast member see signs of sickness and report you?

I'd really like to know the answer to this.

Good point about the travel insurance kajohn! I had never thought or heard of this.

Do you have the policy issued thru DCL? I wonder if most companies, like those on insuremytrip.com would cover this?

It would make sense, because if you are quarantined, you obviously are not able to partake in the cruise.

Just another reason to get insurance - 'Don't leave home without it!'

For the person who was quarentined , were you going to get any type of credit on your next cruise? So sorry to hear your family was sick, glad you could enjoy the parks later though.

Yes, I did get the policy thru DCL, I don't have the policy with me, however, it does specifically have a section on quarantining, and that you would be covered for the time you were quarantined.

I'll try to answer these questions, starting at the beginning.

No, they don't post anyone outside your door. You are on an isolation list. I read in another post that the sick persons charging priviledges are suspended. Our DD was the "officially" quarentined one, and she couldn't charge anyway. After we were quarantined, the only thing I charged was my tips, and I went to guest services to do that. Basically, they say in the letter that they request that you stay in your room.

How did they find out we were sick? On Monday night, our son left the movie (which he went to with the lab) and threw up in the bathroom. They paged us to come get him and asked us to take him to the medical center. The nurse gave us some medicine, and asked us to either call them or guest services in the morning to let them know how he was doing. They asked us to be alert for more vomiting or diarhhea. The next morning (really early) our daughter threw up one time. But by about 8:00, she was feeling fine. DS hadn't been sick any more at all, and both kids really wanted to go to Castaway Cay. I called guest services and told them the situation (including the fact that our daughter had thrown up). They said to keep the kids out of the programming until that evening to be sure they were okay, but that it was fine to go on the island. Cutting the long story short, that night at dinner (we had late dinner), DD complained she didn't feel well. DH was taking her back to the room when she threw up in the elevator. He immediately took her to medical, who then told him we were isolated. They gave us a letter saying that the sick person should stay in their room. Unaffected siblings and family members could move around the boat, but the kids couldn't go to the club (risk of spreading the germs). So they didn't "rat us out" or anything. We were up front with them all the way.

Insurance, etc. Yes we had Disney's travel insurance. We asked about refund, and they said to turn it in to insurance. They did not offer any credit toward a future cruise (which my DH thought they should have). They did provide food and beverages (including alcohol) free of charge to the room. I haven't filed with the insurance company yet. I'll post if there is anything worthwhile when I do.

Overall, while I wish she hadn't been sick, Disney handled it reasonably well.

While it is very unfortunate that your family got sick, it does sound like DCL is now handling things in a much more reasonable way (not automatically quarantining for 72 hours), but waiting to see if it is really a virus and not a one time thing, before imposing the full quarantine.

Please post what you find out from the insurance company. I've never had a claim, so I always wonder if it is worth the money. Hopefully they will be easy to deal with for a claim.

Why should DCL provide a credit towards a future cruise?

Anne: I didn't say that I thought that Disney should credit us towards another cruise. Someone else asked the question and I said they didn't. My DH tends to be the kind who asks for things, under the theory that if you don't ask, you'll never get it. When he said he thought they could have done more, I asked what he would have wanted. His answer was that they could have re-booked us on another cruise. I can't imagine that they would do that. It wasn't their fault our DD got sick. Viruses can strike everywhere.

I was perfectly happy with the fact that we will get some reimbursement from the travel insurance. I think Disney gave up a fair amount of cash under this situation since they gave us free drinks and food. Again, I was satisfied with their handling. I just answered the question that was asked.

Sorry--I didn't mean to imply that you felt they should. I guess I was just wondering why your husband would think to ask. But you answered that :)

tkdlisa, so sorry to hear that your family was ill... I asked DS if he saw your DS in clubs (although I couldn't remember if your son was in the 8-9 or 10-12 group). He couldn't remember seeing him. Now I understand why:(

Our tablemate's DD age 4 got sick at the dinner table on Tuesday night of the same cruise. Her parents quickly took her back to the room. She never had any more problems, but they never were questioned by anyone. Our servers didn't seem all that concerned about it (they were sympathetic and helpful but didn't seem overly worried or act like the "Norwalk police" LOL). Anyway, to answer people's questions....I think Disney is relaxing a little bit with their quarantine regulations.

What is going on here? I can't believe this is still going on. I understand people get sick and germs are everywhere, but come on. My kids go to school everyday where germs are abundant, but my kids aren't throwing up all the time when they come home from school. I believe DCL DOES have some sort of responsibility to its cruisers. I know this is not going to be the popular response, but I do think DCL should do something IF I am exposed to the Norwalk Virus. I am not sure, but do people get this anywhere else (planes, malls, schools...etc...)? I feel it is DCL's responsibility to keep the crew, ship and food clean. If I went to a restaurant and got food poisoning you bet I would go back to that restaurant and demand my $ back. Just my opinion.

Norwalk has been very visible in the news in the past couple months........nursing homes, schools, and even in hospitals. I know at least one hospital closed for a while due to it! It has been all over the country, and people are not aware they are carrying it until they see symptoms.

It hit our family. DH had it....then everyone seemed okay because nobody came down with it. 5 days later DS had it......again, we held our breath and 5 days later, DD......5 more days and I had it! Trust me, we lived w/lysol smell on us for a while  . And each time, we hoped that maybe someone would dodge the bullet..........Where did it come from???? No clue.

If Mr. Smith unknowingly has Norwalk (or any bug) and gets on a cruise ship (airliner, movie theater, etc...) and passes that virus on to other patrons. I don't think the owner of the facility should be responsible.

In the confines of a cruise ship, Mr. Smith's virus could easily infect 200 people during a 7-day cruise.

(my apologies to anyone named "Smith" for this example.)

And we were not anywhere near a cruise ship. :)
DH had to do some hearings in Boston (where there have been massive outbreaks) and two days later he had the worst stomach pains you can imagine and vomiting diarehha, DS vomited about three days later and although I had thought I dodged the bullet yesterday I almost fainted while at the mall-may have been related I don't know. The point is you can pick it up anywhere.

Food poisoning and an airborne virus are very different things! Would you like them to test everyone as they get on the ship for titer levels of Norwalk? That would require a bloodtest. Are you willing to take one? They got a 99 on their last inspection. The ship is super clean, the staterooms smell of bleach each time they are cleaned. You just can't keep following eery passenger around everywhere cleaning up every surface they touch the instant they touch it. It's just not possible. What about the people who get sick in the first day or two--they likely picked up the bug off the ship and brought it on with them, in fact possibly exposing other guests. Are they supposed to also be compensated? Do you also think DCL should compensate passengers when the weather is too bad to go to CC? Where does it end?

Personally if someone gets ill or injured through a direct negligence, then yes, compensation should be expected. But geez, an airborne illness or someones clumsiness? Not a chance.

Let me guess, if you disagree you're a NJ lawyer?

We were on the 1/19 cruise, too. DH is in the ER right now (my mother took him-the kids have bronchitis, and I'm not feeling well). We got home Saturday night, and he's been vomitting and has had diarrhea ever since. He's dehydrated and on IV's. I started with diarrhea this morning and it's lasted all day. Now, I don't know if we got this on the ship or not, but I can't imagine Disney doing any more than they already are. They are constantly cleaning! And there are handwashing signs everywhere. I'm such a germ-o-phobe, I brought along (and used) 5 rolls of antibacterial wipes, and I'm nutty about not touching faces, etc. But, alas! It's everywhere right now.

Hope everyone is on the mend soon!
