As God is my witness

I think in his day Leslie Howard(wasn't he really married to Vivien Leigh?) WAS considered a Dreamboat(using 1940ish slang) but he comes off too prissy for today's tastes.

The book is a fabulous read(read it 2 times) and the movie did it justice,in my opinion.Remember, that book is HUGE!

you are MJ, i'm second in command. :teeth:

and thank you figment22!! i have been trying to find that info all day!! i knew that i had remembered reading about why they chose not to have scarlett's children in the movie, but i couldn't find it...

woo hoo!! i'm so excited to see more windies on the DIS!!!

My pleasure! I've got a whole library of Gone With the Wind books at home on the making of the film, bios of the stars and
of Margaret Mitchell, the movie script, etc. Any time you need a
quote, you know where you can turn!

This past April, we made our first trip to Atlanta and I had the pleasure of being the very first person admitted to the renovated
Margaret Mitchell exhibit at the Atlanta Fulton County Library. It
wasn't even really open for business yet but the media specialist on that floor could see what a Gone With the Wind nut I was and
she let me in. They have the actual typewriter that Margaret
Mitchell wrote the novel on along with some of her discarded
sheets. Very cool--I just loved it.:)

Olivier married Joan Plowright after his divorce from Vivien Leigh.

Edit: Katerkat, you beat me to it;)

LOL I imdb everything. It's become a verb in my family -- "Kate, can you imdb this for me?"

as i said before, i'm a member of several other GWTW realted message boards...it's fun to banter back and forth about something i'm so passionate about! well, aside from disney of course! :p

yes, i'm sure that back then, leslie howard was quite the dreamboat and i guess they really needed someone who wasn't as drop dead handsome to offset clark gable. anytime rhett butler looks at scarlett, my knees go weak...

i've been to atlanta before and got to see the margaret mitchell house...and also the shaw tumblin exhibit while it was at stone mountain. it was neat to see some of the costumes in person and stuff...at the MM house, they had that little museum out behind it and when we were there, they had the portrait of scarlett in the blue dress that hung in rhett's bedroom! it was so neat to see that in person!! you could still see the stain that was left by the liquid in clark gable's glass when he threw it...and protecting the portrait was the doorframe from the set of tara...it was just so cool...

i'm about as nutty over GWTW as i am about disney...i love learning off the wall facts about the making of the movie and stuff. it's just so interesting! we can't watch the movie now without me spouting off some kind of useless trivia i've learned about it...lol

at least my DH appreciates the movie and story as much as i do...it's very important to us...and very significant to our relationship. i'm scarlett and he's rhett...but in the end, we have a happy ending...:)

Can you point me in the direction of some of these GWTW boards?
I never even dreamed that there were so many others out there who felt as I do. I'd love to share! Thanks.

ah---ahem...I know i'm a little late in the conversation, but I love GWTW too. My 2 cents is that Leslie was a perfect Ashley. That's how he was....a dreamy, fluffy, poetic man who is absolutely not right for a woman like Scarlett. But who at age 16 wouldn't fall in love with all the lovey-dovey hype??? It's when she finally matures that she realizes...hello....Rhett is the one to drool over. Gotta love the movie:D

Figment22...check your PMs!! :)

I an not a GWTW fan! As far as I can see, the only character with any redeeming qualities is Mammy. Scarlett annoys me (I don't see what is so strong about her - she always had to rely on some man or another); Ashley is a wimp, Melanie seemed nice but she also was a doormat for Scarlett (I'll be damned if I let her come near MY husband! :teeth:) and Rhett, well, I'll probably get flamed for saying this but Clark Gable always looked like the kind of guy who would have bad breath in real life!

Fiddle Dee Dee, I made it through that movie saying "enough already!"

Another GWTW lover here! I think the point that Scarlett isn't really in love with Ashley at all- she merely wants something that she can't have. She's spoiled and headstrong and the fact that she can't have him is what makes him so attractive to her.

I loved the movie, but the book was better.

Viven Leigh was the perfect Scarlett, the look she shoots Mammy when she makes a comment about Scarlett not eating before the bbq is priceless.

The worst part of the movie in my opinion is when Bonnie dies. It breaks my heart every time.

I've seen the movie one time, while in college. They played it at one of the older theatres in Mobile (One screen - can you believe it? ) and I went to say that I have done it.

(It was fun having an intermission while they changed reels)

I figured if I was going to see it, the big screen would be the way to do it.

I didn't dislike the movie, but have no intentions of ever watching it again.

I saw "It's a Wonderful Life" once and see no point in watching it again either :p

You can also put me in the category of those who have never seen E.T. or Titanic.....

lol...different strokes for different folks i guess!!!

everyone seems to take something different away from the movie. i didn't see it as scarlett "relying" on any man or anyone. she married charles because she wanted ashley but couldn't have him, so she tried to make him jealous...then she was the one who did what she had to do to keep her family fed and taken care of during and after the war. the only reason she asked for rhett's help to get her out of atlanta was because she knew that if anyone had a buggy or whatever, he would be the one to have it...then she needed the money for taxes on tara...so she thought it through and the only person she knew of with that kind of money was rhett...so she tried to get it from him, but when she couldn't get it from him, she turned to frank because she saw the money for tara along with the business potential for herself...she took over the store and ran the mills without having to "rely" on a man to do it for her while she sat on the sidelines...then the whole rhett thing...she married him, not out of need, she had her own money...she married him "for fun" as rhett put it. but deep down, she had stronger feelings for him than she realized due to her clouded impression of ashley. ashley does in a way, lead her on throughout the story...the conversations they have leads her to believe that he wants to be with her, but in the end she realized that it was only for her body, not for her. in the end, she came to realize that she truly loved rhett. and not for his money...she loved him for him, only she was too "blinded" to see it.

i can see how some people would see it that scarlett relied on others. i guess i just saw it all differently...i saw a strong woman who didn't need to rely on a man...she proved that she could fend for herself...

the characters aren't all that "redeeming" throughout the story. but here again, i saw them differently...
scarlett...i've already stated that she was an independant woman who could take care of herself
rhett...just like scarlett...wants something he can't have, but can survive on his own
ashley...someone who couldn't let go of the past. he saw scarlett as his "key" to the past, but he truly loved his wife melanie and would never turn his back on his family.
melanie...she may have seemed wishy washy, but she, too, a fairly strong person. and she didn't care what others thought, she stood by the ones she loved dearest...and she knew about scarlett's infatuation with her hubby, but she was the one who could really see how much scarlett loved rhett even if she wouldn't admit it to herself

oh and clark gable reportedly DID have bad breath in real life...:teeth: i've heard stories about how he and vivien leigh didn't click in real life and one of her complaints was of his bad breath...lol...but he was the perfect Rhett Butler...when i read the book for the first time, he was the image that i had imbedded into my brain. and that was before i had seen the movie...bad breath or not, he still makes me swoon...;)

:)
