Arriving early at MK

Despite many many trips to WDW we have never managed to get to MK before rope drop. We normally arrive at 9 or just after.

In May we will be staying at VWL so I hope we will be able to get there earlier. What happens if you arrive earlier than advertised opening time? Can you get access to Main Street? Could we grab a breakfast pastry from the bakery on Main Street or won't it be open yet?

Would love to avoid the last minute panic we usually have and arrive in plenty of time.

Any tips much appreciated.

Last year we got there just before rope drop and we weren't allowed actually into the park until after rope drop. There were some CMs there telling jokes, leading songs.. that type thing. Then a little while later this family that had been chosen earlier was brought out and they did a small "opening ceremony". It was sweet and a very magical moment for them I am sure. Immediately after that the ropes were removed and we made our way down main street to Fantasyland. The rest of the park opened up about an hour later I think (adventureland, frontierland etc.)

My experience last year was they hold you at the front gate until the park opens. You couldn't actually enter the park.

I dont' think they have opened Main Street early for quite some time.
