Are your kids worried that the world is ending in 2012?

I don't really worry about it, because if this world ends, I have another to move on to that's much better;) The movie didn't make me think, but the increase in natural disasters makes me wonder, you know?

My Dd has always believed that the world as we know it will be gone someday so whether Biblical prophecy is fulfilled in some way or her "world" ends in death, I think she's prepared for the future. I'm just hoping it all will wait until she finishes college because that's the biggie in life for her at this point--getting to the college of her choice. :)

My 10 year old is the one most concerned about it and has asked questions.

But..I know that is because his birthday is 12/21 so, he is very aware that is the date that has been talked about. We have not watched the movie.

My son is 15 so he has seen the movie. We just bought it yesterday because he liked it so much.

He is sort of worried about it though. And he's really bummed because his birthday is ALSO on 12/21.:goodvibes He just asked me last night if we could celebrate it on 12/20 in the year 2012. Just to be safe...:lmao:

We haven't seen the movie yet. Our DS7 will be 10 in 2012 and knows that the world will not end in that year. So no worries there.

I do remember that when I was a kid and in 4th grade (about 1981) all the planets were aligning and I was scared that the world was going to end. I also remember watching specials on Nostrodamas (sp?) and the prediction about 1990. Well, the planets aligned and nothing happened and I graduated high school in 1990 and nothing happened there either.

"No one knows the day or the hour..."

My kids (8 & 9) aren't scared. I have talked to them about rumors, and how they get started. They know not to believe them. They haven't seen the movie, but have heard talk and seen comercials.

My 9 year old says 12 is his lucky number since he will turn 12 on 12/12/12. He is really excited for 2012. He is still trying to talk me into celebrating that one at disney. Maybe we should stay until 12/21 just in case. At least we would be at Disney if it happens.:rotfl:

:thumbsup2:lmao: That is a pretty cool Golden birthday though!!! I do believe I would have to see if I could arrange to take him up on going to Disney for that. Then again, I could turn anything into a good excuse to go to Disney.

Mine haven't seen the movie. We haved talked about end-of-the-world stuff, though. They first got curious when they learned that an astroid probably wiped out the dinos and wanted to know if the same thing could happen to us.

I told them that there is something about end-of-the-world scenarios that fascinate people and that they will hear dire predictions about the end of the world or of civilization all through their lives. In my lifetime, I've been told very sincerely by people that the world or our way of life will soon end because of:

1) Nuclear war with the Soviets
2) Famine caused by overpopulation
3) The second coming of Jesus Christ
4) Hyperinflation
5) Countless environmental scenarios - acid rain, deforestation, global warming, genetically modified plants gone wild, biodiversity collapse, etc.
6) Terrorism
7) Various police state scenarios - terrorism overreaction, Reagan/Clinton/Bush/Obama rigging elections and becoming dictators
8) Y2K
9) Some prediction by Nostradamus or some such

I don't know what it is, but there is something the end of civilization that fascinates people and so there is a seemingly endless supply of disaster scenarios. I suspect that it has always been that way.

Is it only me, or does any one else NOT want to be around for the end of the world??

My aunt is Christian... and follows the Left Behind series and all those other books about the end of the world. So she's always trying to "scare" me into believing stuff. I have my own belief in the Bible, which doesn't exactly follow hers. And to me, I don't really care how it happens... I'd just rather not be around at all for it.

I actually don't think I'll be here(or any other true believers) when the end of the world as we know it happens.

So where does John Cusack live? ;)

Seriously, I find it all very fascinating. The movie was a fun romp but realistically why would the Mayans be able to predict such a thing? They were intelligent people but foreseeing the future?

I wonder what Nostradamus said...

I find it interesting too that people seem to believe that the Mayans were all knowing people. If they were all that knowing wouldn't they have predicted other events.

I just can't wait for 12/21/12 to pass us by and see what all the "believers" say then. It is just like when everyone worried over Y2K.

Let me tell you a story...

I grew up Catholic. My Mother and Father were devout, believe everything you hear Catholics, I thought. My grandparents were even worse. They knew every Priest within a 50 mile radius and there wasn't a Saturday Night or Sunday afternoon that one, two or more Priests were sitting in there living room. I had an uncle that went off to be a Franciscan Monk and two cousins that went off to be Nuns.*

When I was about 11, that would be in 1959, our parish had a guest Priest. He was some sort of missionary, I don't remember from where. His style was fire and brimstone from the get-go. Anyway, he gives the sermon that day and tells us all that the famed "Letter of Fatima", left by Mary herself, had been opened and it told of the displeasure that God felt about his flock. He said, that it stated that the end of the world was spelled out with a specific date in the letter and that date was within 6 months from that moment. He went on to tell us all how we needed to pray and sacrifice and give money for the mission work because they had so little time and so many souls to save and get into everlasting happiness of heaven.

Needless to say, I was a bit shaken. I mean I was 11 years old. I hadn't even had a girlfriend yet, and here he was telling me to bend over and kiss my butt goodbye, it was all over.

We all got into the car to head home and my Mother asked my Father what he thought about that sermon. His reply...If I'd known that I would have bought a new car instead of this used one, since he wouldn't have had to pay it off anyway. He then laughed and it was never mentioned again.

I don't know if this story has a moral or not, but it taught me a lesson that I never forgot. Never trust anyone over 30. Of course that has now altered slightly to be never trust anyone under 60. :rotfl:

That was a true story btw, it actually happened and I will never forget it!

*As a footnote...the uncle left the brotherhood, married, had three children and became a deacon in the church. My two cousins left the Sisterhood, one had a child, out of wedlock and the other married and has two children.

I actually don't think I'll be here(or any other true believers) when the end of the world as we know it happens.

isn't there supposed to be a whole lot of choas and all that other stuff before that happens?? Like the whole 666 stuff, being microchipped and crap...

Whatever happens, be it a huge astriod, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornados, 40 days of straight rain... I don't even want to be around when it all starts....

This came up once, so I explained that the CALENDAR of that culture ended in 2012, not the world, and needed to be recalculated. We talked about leap years and how they do the same thing (adjust the calendar to keep up with the solar cycle), how the Islamic calendar doesn't bother so holidays move all around the year, and about Y2K. That did the trick, although now we have a calendar buff in the house with five different almanacs. I admit, I find all of that time keeping trivia pretty interesting now, too.

DD13 is studying art history, and this week she has been learning how art around the year 1000 was influenced by the belief that the world would end in 1000. Lots of paintings of the Last Judgement and people repenting and being humble. I explained to her that it was like "Y1K" :lmao: only then I realized she wasn't old enough to remember all the Y2K hysteria.

(at my work, they made EVERYONE come in to be there at midnight, just in case something dire happened. ) And here I had grown up listening to Prince sing 1999, and assuming I would be doing something REALLY cool on New Year's that year. Nope. I stood around at work drinking sparking grape juice with my boss and coworkers while nothing happened. I'm sure 12-21-12 will be more of the same. Only so far, there's not a cool Prince song about it. :lmao:

Mickeypooh, your DS has the most COOL golden birthday! Take him out for Chinese, if he likes it. We took my DD for Chinese on hers and they made such a HUGE fuss over her. She loved it. They even sang "Happy Birthday" to her in Chinese.

I just can't wait for 12/21/12 to pass us by and see what all the "believers" say then. It is just like when everyone worried over Y2K.

I've been saying the same thing as well. Everyone who believes that the world is going to end in that year is going to be disappointed when it doesn't and life carries on as usual.

Part of me is not wanting 2012 to come too quickly b/c DS7 turns 10. My little boy is growing up too quickly :sad1:. Next thing I know the teenager years will be here before I know it :faint: .

I don't have any children, but when I was about 11 I made the mistake of reading my parents copy of the book Late Great Planet Earth:scared1: I scared myself silly. I drove my parents crazy with all my worrying.

DGD hasn't said a word about it.. :confused3 Where is this rumor circulating - and why?

Well, I believe in the pre-tribulation Rapture. I don't think I will be here when all that stuff happens. I don't know when it will happen, but almost all the prophecies in Revalations have already been fulfilled. It will be soon, but soon is a relative term, not man's time.
