We are strange, we have both stuffing and dressing, both a baked outside the turkey.
The difference between the two are:
stuffing is made with the toasted cubed bread, onion, celery, seasonings and what ever else my Aunt puts in it and baked in a casserole dish.
dressing's mainly made with dried bread (the crust is trimmed), chicken stock, butter, salt, and pepper. There are 3 styles we make - the plain (just the above items), heavly peppered (comes out almost black when baked) and oyster/pepper (this one doesn't touch my plate).
My dad's family always did the dressing dish. Once he and his siblings married and the spouses started sharing Thanksgiving dinner, the spouses were use to the traditional stuffing, so a small batch of that was made for them to enjoy. Most of the family has converted over to just the dressing, but we still have a couple who still like the other as well.
