Are you avoiding peanut butter?

My husband says we shouldn't eat peanut butter including the jars we have at home until things are settled. I have two jars that aren't opened yet. Is it just the products made with peanut butter that's being recalled, or jars of Skippy, Jif, etc? :confused3

Only certain products have been recalled, although the FDA is recommended that people eat NOTHING made with pb until they have done a more thorough investigation.

I myself just had a nice helping of Peanut Butter Fudge ice cream from Purity (local dairy). We'll see if I get sick.

From the article I read today, jars of peanut butter are fine.

The plant with the issue does not make jarred peanut butter. It makes peanut butter and peanut paste to be used in other products, not as an end product.

No, but then again, I'm more of an almond butter person. I rarely eat peanut butter, maybe once a month, if that. I do like my Reese's PB cups, but I only eat those at Halloween.

Ugh! I don't know what we're going to do. DS is on the autism spectrum, and peanut butter is one of the few things he eats. And the only thing he's ritualistic about. He has to have peanut butter for lunch, every lunch.

I guess the jar we're currently using is ok.

I think Jif is it's own co., so are they ok?

The peanut butter in question is for institutional use, schools, hospitals, etc., not Jif and Skippy. The recommendations are to not eat anything made with peanut butter that you would buy somewhere-like pre-made peanut butter and crackers. What you have at home is fine. I have been eating peanut butter at home for several days and no issues.

OH NOOOO, I didn't even think about those-I bet they are recalled too.

I am avoiding it now. I ate a Weight Watcher's peanut butter cookie last night, then I read online how they are recommending staying away from cookies and things that are made with peanut butter. Well, I'm still here so I guess the cookie was ok.

I read that Peter Pan gets its peanut butter from Congra (sp?) foods, and that they don't get their peanut butter from the plant with the outbreak. The peanut butter paste that the plant sells is used by different companies to make peanut butter cookies and other products, so I guess we will be avoiding those for awhile.

I think all the name brand jars of peanut butter in the stores are fine.

I just bought 2 big jars of JIF last week. I told my girls that they should just stick w/ lunchmeat this week. Not convinced it is necessary to avoid it, but won't really hurt anything either.

Oh, no! We just bought some Nutter Butters and I didn't even think about it. I knew the jars of Jif were fine, and I didn't even think when we bought the cookies.

Well, we'll see. Do they even use real peanut butter in Nutter Butters? Hopefully it's all some fake pseudo-peanut butter concoction. ;)

No, I'm not yet (although I don't eat much anyway). The stuff that is being recalled is almost a totally different product than real peanut butter. It's got all kinds of "stuff" in it and, I'm guessing that since there hasn't been a single case due to real peanut butter, it is due to the crap they put in that stuff.

**sigh** My DD has a life threatening peanut allergy and my DS and I are headed to WDW soon. We were planning on eating all the peanut products we could get our hands on! :upsidedow

I think it is real peanut butter and peanut butter paste made at a specific plant. The peanut butter that plant sells is in large containers, not the kind sold in stores. The paste is sold to companies that use it to make cookies, crackers, and other things from it.

that the FDA says the focus is on products with peanut butter/paste not jarred peanut butter.

From the article:

SUNDAY, Jan. 18 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday warned consumers not to eat peanut butter products containing peanut butter or peanut butter paste, as the investigation into the widespread salmonella outbreak continues.

The health warning focused on products made with peanut butter, like crackers, not jars of peanut butter on store shelves, the agency said.
