I haven't taken any time off since October, not even one day (except Christmas and New Years, obviously, but none of my PTO). I have 4 weeks of PTO accrued. It's been an extremely busy and an extremely rough month here at work, and now that year end is done I requested one day off this week. I have no good reason to take it except a "mental health day", and I already feel guilty about it.

Anyone else ever feel guilty taking time off, even if you have it to take?

LOL! Sorry, Im the exact opposite. I go away any chance I get.

nope - i definitely don't feel guilty taking days off when i need to. i work hard enough the rest of the time.

I don't feel guilty but it does make me nervous. For so many years, when my kids were little, I was always in the negative for leave. Between them getting sick, me getting sick, doctors appointments, etc. I barely had any accrued time. Once everyone started get well, I "hoarded" leave. Now I've got lots of leave, but it is very hard for me to take it because I think "well, what if someone gets the flu--that's a whole week right there and then what if BOTH kids get it?"

DW is -- me, not so much. I do feel guilty when I miss a day of work when we're busy, like to stay home with sick kids or when I'm sick myself. But as far as vacations go -- I have no problem leaving and not thinking of work the entire trip. :goodvibes

I have not taken a day off since I got back from vacation in October. January is my busy time so I will not be able to take any time off until at least February.

I never take time off unless someone is sick or I have scheduled the time well in advance because of some special circumstance. I can't remember the last time I took a day off because someone was sick. I know I am not indispensible, but I hate leaving the burden of my work on someone else.

But Mal, I don't blame you for taking the day if you really need it. I hope you get to do something fun!

This is pretty much what I meant. I schedule my vacations sometimes a year in advance, and I never take sick days. I am just really frustrated over work right now, and thought maybe I could take a day to get my hair done, take a nap, read a book...something that I hardly ever get to do. It even sounds frivolous to type it out...

But I've already ask for and received permission, so I'm going to take it! (insert defiant fist pounding smilie here!)

I don't at all feel guilty using scheduled vacation days, but I do using sick days even if I have a 105 degree fever. Not because I think no one is capable for covering for me, but every workplace I have ever been at always sort of makes you feel guilty for calling in. What I mean is, when someone else calls in, you see everyone moan and complain that they are out, so you don't want that happening when you are out.

Oh, Mal, don't feel guilty! Sometimes we just need a day to recuperate. We were just off for a week and a day for the holiday break. I told a co-worker that it was a ploy to get us to rest up for the upcoming two weeks--the beginning of the semester is always just crazy. I work today from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Whoopee.

I'm trying to arrange a trip to WDW in February--talk about spur of the moment!

I took the day after Thanksgiving off to go shopping. I took a day without pay. It really bothered me that I was shopping and spending money and not getting paid that day.

I also got the Monday off after Christmas and New Years. I wish I could have banked those 2 days for summer, when I have a hard time working.

I really don't see me taking off until April 07 for a WDW vacation and I am going to make that one 10 days.

I will get the Federal Holidays off still.

NO WAY!! If I have to take off due to being sick, I do NOT feel guilty...but if there is something urgent going on I can do some work from home.

That's why they call them "personal days." Enjoy!
