Agree with Dan. We are generally a society of extroverts. Americans love to talk about their favorite subject -- themselves.
I am not near as shy as I use to be. But still shy. (Most people don't believe me.)
Pin trading with CMs has helped.
Tip -- Anyone have overly shy kids and going to a Disney park? Help them overcome their shyness with a lanyard and pins!

I'm introverted and shy when in a group, especially with people I don't know too well. When I'm in a social situation that's uncomfortable I usually have a glass of wine (or 2) then I'm just fine!

well im typically a shy person....especially with strangers....lately with guys too....im 20 and its annoying in my classes when im shy..and i hate talking in class....so yes, im shy

I'm shy too. It's torture for me. I like to just sit back and smile. I love it when I sit with 2 people at a table that like to monopolize the conversation. I'm a listener more than a talker. Unless I'm meeting Pop Daddy, then I can't seem to shut up.

I am so bad at small talk, but I love to listen to people talk to each other. I am just not good at it and neither was my Mom. People tend to think I am snobby because of this. I wish I was better at it. I really am trying to be because DH likes to talk to people (goes along with being a Doctor I guess .)

It depends on my mood, usually I'm really sociable and friendly, and I have no problems striking up a conversation with some random stranger wherever I am. My friends just shake their head at me sometimes, I'll just jump into a conversation with someone I don't even know. Gets me in trouble sometimes!!!
The only time I won't do this is if I'm cranky.

I used to be painfully shy. I'm getting a little better but with total strangers I still have a bit of a hard time.

Maybe you can look for others who seem uncomfortable in that situation and go up to them and start a conversation. You can usually tell who is feeling as bad as you are. It helps not to think of yourself so much, but to think of others and how you can help them feel more comfortable. It really does help.

Thanks for the tips. I survived my business trip this past week. I still don't prefer to go and be around strangers, but I guess that is life. It's funny when you come across other people where you can tell feel the same way. Such awkward situations. I wish I could have the drive to be more sociable.
