Are you a salaried employee?

Right now I love my job. Two years ago I had a real jerk of a boss. Talk about a lawsuit waiting to happen against him for harassment!!!! We had one woman leave because he basically forced her out. The next year tow other employees gave their resignation and it was because of the way he treated them. My DH thought he would launch a campaign to get me out next. When the person he hired to replace me since I took one of empty slots, was hired at a higher pay than what I was getting in the same job, he was really not happy and neither was I. I had been there for over 10 years and was getting small raises each year.

We are also "Leased Employees" through Landrum Professional so that we can get health insurance since we are a small office. Our representative from there is a joke. I hate her with a passion with what she did or should I say didn't do to support one of the ladies that left.

My DH sent a letter to the Board of Directors and said that if they did not look in to my bosses attitute and treatment of the employees, he was going to take them to court. Landrum came over and did an investigation and found out just what he was really like. They interviewed all the employees and two that had just left and all but two gave the same story. The two that didn't had only been there a week, so they hadn't seen the real side of the boss.

We think he was given a choice - resign or be fired. Thankfully he did resign. We now have a new boss and he is super to work for. He really cares about his employees. Also the person that was hired to do my job left before she had been there a year. It was a good thing because she was causing problems too. She was working here way into a position that we never even had at our office. She conned the board into letting her do HR related things and she ended up not doing the stuff she was supposed to be doing.

The group of people in our office now are great to work for and with. When you are in that type of atmosphere, you don't mind doing extra or staying late when needed. Right now I am the only person in the office with over 2 years there. I have been there 15 years and will stay as long as I can. I now have 3 titles - Accountant/CFC Coordinator /FSECC Coordinator. But I love doing the other two things because I know them so well.

Another hourly worker here, but I work continental shifts so do 12 hour shifts. It company policy (and I think law) that you can't do more than 16 hours in a day. So I get paid normal time for 42 hours a week plus 35% shift allowance and a supplement of £67.03. Any hours after that in the week and Saturday day shift are paid at 1.5 on Saturday night shift its 5 hours 1.5 and 7 on 2 times. Sunday is double time as is any bank holiday. Mind you the shift pattern is odd
2 days on followed by 2 days off
3 days on followed by 2 days off
2 days on followed by 3 days off

My philosophy is that "I work to live, I don't live to work."

That said, if there is a pressing deadline I'm all too happy to work late. Well ok, maybe happy isn't the right word. ;) But I"ll do it. Otherwise I work 40 hours a week. period.

What ticks me off, is in the industry I'm in (software eng.) a lot of the other developers are spoiled. Well, perhaps I am too... but these are people in their early thirties who've never worked 8-5... they roll in around 10am, then mess around for an hour and go to a long lunch. They all stay until 7-8pm (and often till the wee hours of the morning). But they play games and stuff in the afternoon. Granted, these guys are awesome at what they do, and they do get work done, but they get bonus points from the boss for being there so long... even though they aren't working for a good portion of that time. Me? I go in before 8, get my work done (usually turn in projects ahead of time and with less bugs than other developers) and go home at 4-5pm. But I get dinged for not being a team player (which my coworkers think is stupid... we were a very close bunch)

Whatever happened to quality over quantity? Why is it bad that I have good time management and want to spend time w/ my family?

Luckily, I'm in a different environment now (academic vs corporate) and I hope that the culture will be more fitting to my style. So far it seems to be good.

The USA is the only country in the world that works as much as we do... I think it contributes to obesity, stress and poor health in general. It also contributes to the breakdown of the American family.

I realize I'm lucky in that I have a good income and am lucky to save a really good chunk of money every month, so if I got fired for working my 40 hours (and only my 40 hours) we'd be ok for a while. But the american people should really stand up to the employers that are taking advantage.

One other thing. I don't get how people can just let vacation hours expire. I NEVER don't use ALL of my vacation in a year. It's a waste of a benefit if I let them expire. And I need that time with my family to recharge and stay sane. :)

I'm salaried. I work sometimes 12 hours a day and sometimes on weekends. My staff is hourly and can make MORE than I do with overtime! :scared1:
Yeah, my former boss in FL used to say that if we figured what they were actually being paid an hour for all the extra hours they worked, the hourlly people are doing better.

I cannot imagine 12 hour days as a single parent. :sad2: :sad1:

Exactly! I'm an hourly employee along with my coworkers. Basically, no OT unless you are working in a clinical area...which we aren't. I get a good amount of work done in my 8 hour day. If someone is really having a problem, they can request OT. They must give reasons they are requesting it, ie, hit with a huge amount of work at once, etc. It runs through the channels for approval. I used to share an office with someone who was very quiet...never heard the keyboard going, rarely a work related phone conversation, no sound of papers flipping. Hmmmmmmmmmm. What are they doing? I used to wonder that way too often. Yet they are approved for OT while I get my work done. Amazing. The hard workers seem to get the short end of the stick.

The meeting sounds like it was a way of confronting your Dh without putting him on the spot directly.

No, the meeting was for the entire work group and they all work an 8 hour day. DH is the first to arrive and not in the first 50% to leave every day. He also received the highest annual bonus allowed, which he was the only one to receive. He was also recognized in a company wide conference and received an additional bonus. He works basically 2 people's jobs because he inherited a second job title from an engineer position that was never replaced.

I think the entire meeting was about a company that is growing in this economy (record sales in the company's history) and trying to see how much more they can get out of the current employees without hiring new people. Especially since the company prides itself as family oriented with wonderful benefits, it seems contradictory to their beliefs.
