Are we going to kill ourselves with all the walking?

We are planning to go to Epcot, AK, MK, and MGM back to back 4 days in a row. We will then take abreak for a few days after that then head back to the parks. Will we just wear ourselves out? The reason we are doing it like this is my parents will only be there at the beginning of the trip and I wanted them to have a lot of time at the parks before they leave, but I'm worried they will be worn out.

Yes, you will wear yourself out unless you are in GREAT shape. But it is well worth it. It will also depend on the time of year that you are there. Actually, if you are there in the slower seasons you will walk even more because you won't be standing in lines as long. But that is a good thing. If this 40something fat women can do it, most anybody can!

I usually hit the wall around day three myself. How old are your parents and how good of health are they in? I take my 82yo father and my aunt & uncle who are in their late 70's and they rent scooters for the week from an outside company. They're all in great health but they say they'd never be able to do the parks without the scooters. It helps that I take them in February when it's not so hot & humid too. It may be better to have quality time at the parks than to rush them around to see it all. I'd do Epcot & MK with them, take a break day and then do AK with them. Just my 2cents.

Get a good pair of shoes meant for walking and break them in before the trip. Take a lot of mini breaks...sit down a lot, go inside the shops to cool off and look around, etc.

Thanks for the tips. I'm in pretty good shape ( I wouldn't say excellent, but better than average) and my dh is in close to excellent shape. I'm move concerned about my mom, step-dad and son. I guess they can all sit an relax if needed while dh and go have fun :)

The way I look at it is with ALL THE WALKING you do, when you stop to EAT, NO GUILT at all. My family goes to the WORLD and we go all day and all night and eat our hearts out and rarely come home having gained any weight...SO that is the POSITIVE side of all the walking. :thumbsup2

Sorry, I want to add, we always go in late Jan early Feb, so I am unaware of the HEAT factor for the summer months in Orlando. You may need to take it much easier. Those months I go it is very do-able to be walking all day and all night as the temps are much more comfy. :cool1:

Its the only way we do the parks we are on a WDW high so we are go go go..lol I wouldnt know how to take a break from the parks sometimes my DH and kids like to go to the water parks and I go to Epcot, I just cant get enough of the parks..

I think it depends upon how you do your park visits ... if you are like us and are there at rope drop and go until the park closes, you will wear yourselves out. If you take your time arriving and stroll from attraction to attraction, have a sit-down lunch, etc., then you could probably do the plan you are proposing.

Because I get physically (walking all day on cement) and mentally tired (lots of stimuli!!!), I need the day on, day off pattern -- at the very least 2 days on and a day off.

So really, it depends on whether you plan to be a commando or not.

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: we have started walking every night for this reason......we usually have a day where we only do a park a half day to break it up in the middle of the week.

you may need a little rest but it will be okay, i made the mistake of getting new gym shoes right before, they need to be broken in

I AM JUST HOME FROM THE WORLD.... MY DBF, DCOUSIN AND I DID EPCOT AND 4 HOURS AT MK ON THE 3RD, EPCOT AND MK ON THE 4TH AND EPCOT,AK, AND MGM ON THE 5TH.... WE DID A TON OF WALKING I WORE A PEDOMETER EACH DAY... WE HAD AN AVERAGE OF 2.5 MILES A DAY.... BUT IT WAS ALL WORTH IT...

WOW...what a great idea...but ONLY 2.5 miles...I would have easily called it 6-8 miles or more in a day? Are you sure the pedometer was working properly? :confused3 I am just saying that as you even factored in the walking to and from the buses to get to the different parks and then walking all throughout the parks?????

I would have guessed more than 2.5 miles also. Perhaps it was 2.5 miles per park?

It really depends on your pace within the parks. If you're in a mad dash to ride/see everything, then they will carry you out on a stretcher at the end of the day! Plan before you go, which attractions you really have to take in with your parents, and leave the rest for when you're on your own later in the week. If you can, take a break in the afternoon and go back to your hotel for a swim or a nap (or both!).

We (me, DW, DD9 and DS6) always have a pretty hardcore schedule (park open to close -seldom take a break) and do it for 4-5 days straight. It never has bothered us, but I think the key is to take breaks when you need them, and to monitor how the youngest and tiredest in your party are doing. I am always the one who rusn ahead to get FPs, and I am the one who tries to recognize when it is just the right time for an ice cream or a bottle of water. A well-timed snack/drink can turn the whole day around.

Don't worry, By day 2, you'll be in some pain and think OMG I'll NEVER MAKE IT. But by the middle of Day 3, you'll just go numb and won't feel a thing after that.

How true!!! I still can't feel anything and I've been home for 3 days now!

Agreed as well. :rotfl2: Day 2 we felt like a Mack truck hit us but by day 3 and 4 you were pretty much either numb or in the groove and it didn't feel like it did that second morning you work up groaning. :teeth:
This time I'm going to get some of those really good athletic socks for cushioning and moisture wicking. I think the shoes I have now are just not good walking ones so I'm going to buy a new pair soon so they can be well broken in my Dec. I know I've read some really good tips on the DIS boards and hope to put them to good use! I don't think one can go too far to protect your feet. The rest of you will be under stress anyway but if the feet are hurtin', AIN'T no one going to be movin!
And I'd go along with the 6-8 miles a day in a park. 2.5 is a regular walk around my "block" and that's not much.

Unless you have some unusual medical condition, all the walking will prolong your life as opposed to kill you.

That said, I do not believe that walking casts and leg prostheses are intended for large amounts of walking let alone marathoning.
