Are tips automatically added to DDE now?

I'm frantically trying to keep up with all of the new food happenings and I swear I read that tips are going to be added (18%?) to DDE bills?

First I've heard of it - and I'm a long-time DDE cardholder. They usually send out e-mails regarding changes, and I haven't seen one.

I'd be very interested to hear if that's actually going to happen.

The only thing that I was reminded of was to tip on the full amount-- prior to the discount being applied. That seems simple enough I love my DDE card and have saved a ton of money over the course of a year.

I think I read a rumor about tips being added but that was several weeks ago.

Actually, I posted in the thread that I read this on (I couldn't find that thread until after I posted here - lol!) and there is a rumour that it may be for all DDE meals - small or large party.

Starting in 2008 there is supposed to be an automatic gratuity of 18% added to ALL orders using DDE.

Can't remember where I saw that but I thought it was a done deal.

It is part of the union contract that passed and starts January '08.

18% will be added to checks using the DDE discount no matter what the party size is.

I suppose they were probably having people tip on the discounted price, but personally if they add the 18% I'll gladly leave it at that. We usually tip 20% of the total bill.

I'm not sure I like being "told" what to tip on a meal for two people, although I can see where people probably abused the system and that would get annoying if I were the waiter/waitress. We always figured the 20% off paid for the tip. I guess now we'll save money.

I didn't get this either. I hear it's probably to make up for people basing the tip on the discounted amount, not the original amount.

I think that's probably the main reason.
But for us it makes no difference whatsoever, as we always tip 20% on the original amount anyway.

Only issue I'm going to have with this is if I receive bad service. Generally I tip 20% or more, but when I get bad service, its more like a 10% tip. It doesn't happen often, but I still don't want to be forced to pay those people more.

Just a question -- if the tip is automatic and you receive awful service (and for us to tip less than 18% the service would have to be truly awful) do you have any recourse? Can you lower the tip?

It's an awkward situation, but you can ask to speak with he manager. Never happened to me, but I've read here and there where someone has done that and occasionally got the tip lowered (or removed).

Y'know I just had a bizarre thought...

The DDE discount is 20% off total bill
The new automatic tip is 18% of total bill

so now with the DDE you get a 2% discount!

Like others have said, we tip on the full amount and generally tip over 20% if the service is good.
From now on, if the service ain't good -- we'll be spending the time talking to the managers.

Sorry to say, it gripes my behind that the tipping is mandatory -- wasn't the lesson learned with the DDP? I can certainly understand a mandatory included tip for parties of six or more - but for a party of two!

I wouldn't have a problem with this at restaurants but it would bug the heck out of me at bars when all you are ordering is a beer - notably the Rose & Crown...I usually tip a buck a beer and think that's pretty fair regardless of the price. I know it's chump change we're talking about here but they'll probably no reason to walk inside to order a guinness when the savings is now only 2% and you can get it outside at the cart faster.

Lesson learned with the DDP? What are you talking about? I guess the reason for dropping the grat can be argued, but I see it as Disney's way of pocketing more money, plain and simple. I see a CEO asking his secretary, "How much does that 18% on the DDP pay out over a year to all of our server? 20 million, well we're just stopped paying them that then!"

If you want to argue that the DDP dropped the grat due to complaints, then thats the same reason the DE card will now have grat. It seems the majority here say they always leave 18-20%, but that is NOT the average. Having dated a disney server, and still knowing a couple, I can tell you a LOT of cheap people have the DE card. Remember the people scamming the DDP? Those are the same ones who have the DE card now. A party of 6, alcoholic drinks, nice buffet meal, and the bill will be $200. Dad uses his DE card, saves $40 In his mind, the server just removed dirty plates, so he leaves $10. Setups like that happen often.

Many posters on DIS claim to tip 20% on the undiscounted check. Either they're not typical DDE customers, have bad memories or lie.

The union wouldn't have agree do this if the typical DDE customer tipped 20%on the undiscounted check. An 20% tip from a customer that bases their tip on the discounted check is only 16%. A 15% from a customer that bases their tip on the discounted check is only 12%.
