I just had a Disney security person stop me to ask if I was shooting for personal use. Seems like a waste of time to ask. Who would say "no?"

I had that happen at WDW and at Hersheypark, Hersheypark being the more interesting of the 2 experiences. there a security guard stopped me shortly after I entered the park he asked if I was a professional I said yes, he asked where I was going I said to the amphitheater to take pics of the show, he said you can't do that,I said I've been doing it for years, and walked away going to the show, as the show started I noticed that he had folowed me and now security had every exit covered, I'm guessing they didn't want to disrupt the show, they stood and watched as I took pictures, when the show ended I headed for the exit where the first guard was wating, he again told me I couldn't do that, I calmly said I just did...LOL

I told him he needed to contact the head of entertainment, who had recently bought copies of my pics..

it turns out, that Hershey's policy is to escort professional photographers/photo journalists who are there to get pics and write a story, they want to make sure you have full access to the performers and the best vantage point for taking pics.

he had somehow misinterpretted that policy to mean that pro photographers could not enter the park and take pictures..

the rest of that season he would turn and walk the other way any time he saw me..

I believe Disney has a similar policy, so he might have been checking to see if he should radio for an escort..and worded his inquiry poorly

That seems kind of strange. Even if you're carrying one of the stereotypical "giant white lenses" (which is generally a pretty poor fit for WDW shooting, outside of maybe the Safari ride!), it's not like those are that unusual there... and I didn't get any trouble whatsoever at WDW or DL carrying around a full-size tripod.

Reminds me of this one time! I set up my tripod in front of the crystal palace for Wishes and a family came over and stood in front of my setup and said "we are ready for the picture when you are" I should have told them cash up front please

I get something similar - other Guests will often walk up to me and start asking me questions, obviously under the impression that I'm a CM. I try to be polite and courteous about it, but I nearly snapped when a woman walked up to me in Liberty Square once and laid into me on a rant about how her kids had waited for 20 minutes to see a character and the character went back stage.

Tell them you're just practicing and don't even have any film in the camera. Honesty works!

My guess is that it had something to do with you being alone with a very expensive camera. I doubt they would question you if you were with your family.

I am sure that they have a similar policy, but it is not like you can just walk up to the gates and request it. You cannot even sell a shot taken inside Disney without written permission. I have a CM friend in management and he was told it is next to impossible to get that permission. They typically have contracts with professionals with international acclaim.

I agreee 100%, my point was if they spot a photographer that they might think is a photojournalist, they will stop them and then provide the escort,,,they certainly allow journalists to get pics to go with their stories..

that permission may be next to impossible to get , but it is possible, I Got the OK back in 2001 from the disney legal dept..

Its funny you say that! They may be professional with international acclaim, but I have seen Hundreds of Photos here on these message boards taken by DIS members that are way better than any WDW photo taken by these professionals!

I got stopped by fans at game two of the ALCS asking me which newspaper I work for. All I had was my dale and 55-200 lens on. No tripod or monopod or anything. I still haven't gotten used to those questions.
