Are these cheap airfares a fluke? Hopefully they will appear same time next year

These cheap fares are making me nuts. We've been planning a trip for 10/02. But when airfare
fell to $118rt. I almost jumped & booked a trip. I know we will have more $$$ to spend on 2002
thanks to monthly saving, but it is SO HARD not to go NOW!
Does anyone know if fares tend to drop this time of year??? I can only hope!
 
We go to Disney every year at this time and this is the lowest I have ever seen airfares. Ofcourse I booked my flight in April when they were $174 for a round trip. Gotta love me.
 
This is the second consecutive year we are going in September due to the airfare sale. Last year's trip was spur of the minute when I found the $90 RT on Southwest from Nashville. This year, I was hoping the same thing would happen and I was right...same fare, so we're making our Second Annual September Family Trip to WDW. Of course, you never know how the airlines think so I wouldn't bank on finding the same fares for next year. Just be pleasantly surprised if you find them.
 
I recently read tourism is down 15% for this fall 2001. I went last Oct. 2000 and believe me nothing compares to the deals this year for airfare, resorts and car rental. I would absolutely think real hard about going sooner then later based on the deals available right now. Now, the pattern could continue through the next year and the deals could be just as good or better. I jumped at the deals now based on what I paid last year for the same trip. This makes taking multiple trips to the same place a real easy decision.
 
Airfares are about as low as they're gong to go for mid-late summer rates. The economy has hit most airlines VERY hard so they are dumping fares to try to attract business. If the economy picks up next year, expect airfares to rise accordingly, as airlines will try to recoup some of the money they've lost these last couple of quarters (and probably the next 2 quarters as well).

If you can make the trip this year, I'd recommend it.

"I guess I expected it to be more crowded," said Kinch, of Erie, Pennsylvania.

Disney's Magic Kingdom was far from a ghost town on a recent, rainy weekday, but visitors say it's been less crowded than usual during the traditionally busy summer season.

The nation's slowing economy is taking its toll on Orlando, America's theme park capital, and on other theme parks around the nation that attract visitors from long distances.

Regional parks are faring better, and overall U.S. theme park attendance is expected to increase 5 percent over last year's 317 million visits, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

But in the middle of the summer, when theme and amusement park visits are traditionally at their highest, many parks are experiencing a drop in attendance not seen in years. While most of the major U.S. theme parks don't release attendance figures, other numbers tell the story.

In Orlando, home to seven of the most popular theme parks in the world, hotel occupancy rates were down this spring and passenger traffic at Orlando International Airport dipped more than 15 percent in April, the most recent month for which figures are available.

During the third quarter, attendance at Walt Disney World's four theme parks in Orlando slipped 7 percent to 8 percent, with a 5 percent to 6 percent decrease at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, according to Merrill Lynch analysts Jessica Reif Cohen and Andrew Slabin. Hotel occupancy rates at both resorts were down almost 3 percent.

Disney's recently opened California Adventure in Anaheim, California, was struggling to attract 9,000 to 12,000 guests a day, even though it can accommodate 33,000 people at a time, according to some estimates.

Discounts offered
To boost attendance for the summer, officials have lowered California Adventure's entrance fee by $10 for adults and will allow one child in free with each paid adult admission. They've also brought back the Electrical Parade, a fixture at Disneyland until it moved to Florida in 1996. They plan to open a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" attraction in September and have added smaller character shows.

Operating income for Disney's theme park division, long a consistent money-winner for the company, is expected to decline 3 percent this year to $549 million, Cohen and Slabin wrote.

Merrill Lynch analyst Neil Blackley said in a recent report that he's cautious about revenue growth for Vivendi Universal's two Florida theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, because of "some softness in Florida."

Regional parks doing better
Regional parks are faring better because most visitors can skip travel and hotel expenses.

"They're somewhat recession-resilient," said Terrie Ward, a spokeswoman for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions in Alexandria, Virginia.

But even Ohio-based Cedar Fair, which owns six regional amusement parks nationwide including Cedar Point in Ohio and Knott's Berry Farm near Los Angeles, has seen a 4 percent downturn in attendance, excluding results from two newly acquired parks.

At Six Flags Inc.'s 30 domestic parks, attendance has been steady due to a base of season ticket holders and promotions, such as small children getting in for free, said vice president Debbie Nauser.

St. Louis-based Busch Entertainment Corp.'s nine parks, which include the Sea World and Busch Gardens brands, are on track to have a record year for attendance, said Vic Abbey, the company's chairman and president.

In Orlando, however, the climate for theme parks isn't expected to improve for some time.

"It's supposed to be busy this time of the year," said Abu Sayfalnasi, whose family owns three T-shirt stores on International Drive, Orlando's tourist strip. "But business is slow and there are less tourists."
