Are there reason you would NOT get DSL?

I've had such horrible luck with our cable speed that I'm thinking DSL might be the way to go? I know very little about it. Please give me the pros and cons.

I will thank you now for the replies as I'm sure by the time I get home from school the cable will be out like it has been for over a week now.

We just went from DSL to cable and haven't noticed a bit of difference! The DSL went out just as much as the cable does, if not more.

I have never had cable, it was double the cost of DSL. I have SBC and there has been about 3 times my DSL has went out since April. It was never very long. My brother has cable now and his went out for about a week.

I've had cable and I now have DSL and I haven't noticed much of a difference between the two in regards to speed. But it really depends on where you live. I lived in a suburb of Boston, which is very congested. So the speed of my cable would drop depending on the time of day (when a lot of people would get online at the same time). And from what I understand, DSL can be a bit slower the farther away from the hub, or source, for the internet. I now live in a small village on Cape Cod and my DSL is just as fast as my cable was. So it really depends on your area. I would call the ISP for the DSL and try and find out where their hub is and as for the average speed in your area. Hope this helps.

If you get DSL, try not to install "winpoet". This seems to be a major cause of headaches among some DSL customers. I don't know specifics of why, buy once my buddy installed it without it, my problems went away. Same was true for other people where I work. No WINPOET, no problems.
