Are there any deodorizers for fridges.....BESIDES baking soda?

Back on 4th of July weekend while we were camping, our fridge lost it's compressor. We had left on that Friday and came back the following Monday. Not exactly sure when the fridge konked out, but needless to say we lost everything.

I think the worst part of it for me was that I am a bus driver and only work 20hrs/week during the summer instead of my 38-40 hrs during the school year. So for the prior 2-3 weeks, I had been stocking up on freezer items to have during the summer. Now, my garbage man has all of that You can only imagine how much $$$ when down the drain.

Anyways, I cleaned out the whole fridge/freezer, washed everything down, bought new boxes of baking soda and put one in each the fridge and freezer. My husband had unplugged it until we can get it fixed. Well, it's now almost a month later and it's still not fixed (that's a whole other story). Well, for some reason I opened the fridge door today and it's not a strong smell, but it does have a musty type odor to it. I'm assuming it's from having it closed up for the past 3 weeks or so.

Just curious is there's anything besides baking soda that I can put in there to help out the issue? I opend all of my house windows and opened the fridge doors to let it air out and it doesn't seem as bad but hoping to find another solution to completely get rid of the smell.

Airing it out is the best thing you can do now. Closing the doors was a mistake. Keep them open (even just an inch or two) until the motor is fixed - don't close them at all. Before you put stuff back in, give it another wash down with hot water and vinegar. Good luck!

Get a couple bags of charcoal briquettes--plain, not the easy-light kind. One each for freezer and fridge.

Pop the bags open and set inside each, closing the doors. Check occasionally to see if the smell is gone.

This is a sure thing, said the owner of a laundromat I once used. He and his wife had their freezer in a back room of the laundromat, and someone thought unplugging it would be funny over a holiday weekend. The freezer was full of meat that went bad before they discovered what had happened.

He said that's what the appliance store told him was the only thing that would remove the smell, but it might take a few bags to get it all.

Do not try to use the charcoal after doing this! Just trash it.

We had a similar situation with our refrigerator. I honestly thought we'd have to buy a new one, it smelled so bad. What finally worked was putting a bunch of kitty litter in there. They sell some that is "deodorizing" and it eventually did work. No residual smell.

Check Amazon for fridge deodorizer.

We had Indian leftovers in our fridge a few months back, that left a lingering odor and I bought deodorizers from Amazon

I would also wipe it out with vinegar or lemon juice

Your homeowners insurance will likely reimburse you for the lost food.

We called to see what they could do. They said it was a no go on reimbursement on the food because losing the food wasn't caused by a power outage. It was a mechanical issue with the fridge. So we're trying to see if LG will cover the cost (well part of it anyways)
