Are the Cabins in the 2800 loop within walking distance of the Outpost depot ? Would it be possible to cut through the wooded area to get to the Outpost depot rather than walking on the roads ?

Meh, it's walkable, but I would not cut through the woods to get there. The horses use the trails in the woods behind that loop and while I'm sure it's ok for a horse it's kinda treacherous as a person
There is a bus stop between the entrance of loop 2800 and 2700. So on early check-in starting 60 days before arrival, you can specify a loop request (like 2800) and one other request from a pre-selected list of options (like near transportation/bus stop). That will get you up near the front of the loop as much as possible and shorten the walk as much as possible. 2800 is a good-sized loop so if you get placed way in the back it's a walk up to the loop entrance then on to the Outpost.
Several people choose loop 2800 during Marathon weekend in January because folks can walk directly to the Outpost to get a bus to the Half or Whole start and not rely on internal busses to get to the Outpost (which I do because I stay down in loop 100 or 200).
