Are the safes at resorts "safe"?

I was just wondering what everyone's experience is with the safes at the resorts? Are they really safe? Does mousekeeping have keys to them? I guess I am just wondering if they are really "safe" to leave valuables in?

I believe the last time we stayed at the Poly, we used our key card and made up our own code to get in the safe. I know they have master keys, because last year ours had to be fixed. I don't think it is the mousekeepers who have the master keys. We have never, ever had a problem. I leave our spare money and credit cards in ours.

I've left thousands of dollars in cash and property in the WDW safes over the years, and never had a problem. Housekeeping doesn't have keys.

We always leave our cash and other small valuables in our room safe and I have never had a problem. I would note, though, that they are pretty small. Lisa

Just like the previous posters, we have always utilized the safes, and never had a problem. For what it's worth, I have never heard of anyone having an issue with the safes in WDW.

We have always used the safes also. I always pick a secret place to hide the key while we are out and about in the parks. Sometimes in a shoe, sometimes in a small zippered pocket of our suitcase. We never carry the key because I would be afraid we would lose it.

That doesn't worry? I'm a worry wart(or so my DH says), guess I'd be worried that someone would come across it.
Also guess it comes down to a trust thing anyway, Huh?
I've never used the safes in hotels, but if I did, I'd guard the key with my life, just the way I am, drives my DH bananas

We have used them for years without a problem. The first time we stayed on property, my son kept his baseball cards in the safe. We still chuckle over that.

We used the safe the last time we visited and didn't have any problems. It was on the small side but everything we needed to put there fit without a problem.

We always carry our safe key with us. There is no way I'd leave it in the room. Plus if you do lose it you can get a replacement. It costs money but worth it in case of a lost key.

I have heard from hotel people that room safes are treated very securely. Keys are only in the hands of bonded people, they keep rigid control over them at all times, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Although, I also would only trust them so far!

Housekeeping does not have the key to the safes. At the AKL there is a key in the lock when you get in the room and then just put what you want in the safe and lock the safe and take the key with you.

I believe they are totally safe, we left cash and credit card in safe and it was fine. But we also left a laptop on the desk and no one messed with it at all.

When we stayed at the Poly last Sept, we used the safe for our laptop. I was actually surprised at how large it was. Also, we were able to choose a code for the safe, so we didn't need a key.

Thanks again for all of your replies. I will definitely be using the safe and not worry one bit about it now. I am just a worrier!! I am not going to worry at WDW though!!!
