I think that $10 is used because it is a round number.
$0 is more round than $10, plus you don't have to do any calculations, exchange money, or pay paypal fees - just give the points away. Next time you have some you're not going to use, I'll take all you have.

I'm not anyone in disguise, don't know you are anyone else on this board for that matter. You're lucky no one took you up on your bet offer, you would have lost. From your later post about $5 for a family member, whatever anyone charges a family member is perfectly fine - it doesn't get posted here and thus doesn't hurt anyone.
If someone's points are going to expire or can't use them, why not donate a room for a couple of nights to the silent auction/raffle at your local church/volunteer fire dept/school/charity fundraiser?
Great idea! I've been involved in about a dozen charity auctions soliciting donations to raffle or auction off, this could be a great way to use points. It might take a little work typing up a letter explaining the conditions, but probably less work than responding back and forth to renters who won't pay more than $10/pt. My accountant would say to use the rack rates as far as valuing the donation, the charity would like that as well because a lot of people who buy at those auctions are bargain seekers.

Don't know who the banned guy is or why he got banned. I hope it wasn't for trying to make people realize how much their points are worth. It definitely wasn't me, and I'm not trying to get banned now or ever.

I was going to try to explain how market economics works and how prices are really set but then I figured that would mostly be a waste of time.
Go ahead, I don't think it would be a waste of time, it might help some people figure out that they are leaving money on the table every time they rent their points for less than what they are worth.

Thank you for providing that information, I was wrong and also forgot that I had added some points since my original contract. A 20% to 50% increase in dues, should that provide some basis for the majority of us for valuing points higher than in 2000? I realize that people can charge whatever they want to without having to defend themselves on the low end, but the same should hold true for those wishing to rent at the higher end. I'm just hoping this discussion makes the occasional renter understand that they don't have to rent their points for $8-10.
That being said...most of the points that are a lower on the rental board are expiring soon and can't be banked.
Perhaps it is getting a little better lately, I still recently found 550 pts for rent @ $10.50 for March use year, that's still 8 months away by my calendar, and not exactly fire-sale time. The other thing that people might be undervaluing is their time, I think being a reservation agent for non members is worth at least $2-3 a point.

For those of you who have been going for and getting $12+/pt, thanks for sharing your methods. Hopefully at least some of the dumpers will figure out that patience can be rewarded.
I posted earlier that I didn't think that ebay was the right venue, and I since saw some posts that were made a while ago that people used to get $17-18/pt there. As far as I can tell as long as you don't use Disney copyrights we can still post there, but saw a mention about needing to be certified by some agency to offer reservations on ebay. Gonna have to check that out and get back here real soon. Thanks everyone!
