Are the Fort Wilderness Cabins worth it?

I have stayed at the cabins many times, and never rented a golf cart. I request to be near a bus stop, and have found the buses to be sufficient for getting around the campground and getting to the parks. I love the cabins!

Have you considered a studio at Boulder Ridge? They sleep five, and if you rent points, it's very reasonable. If you pay cash, they are comparable to the regular WL rooms in price, but they might fit the bill better for you than a cabin.

If you are not really planning to use a kitchen I would look at trying to get something at the WL or WLV - or CC. Have you looked into renting DVC points to get something? Don't know if that would work for you but it is a thought. I think the cabins are good for people who are looking for a bit more space, more beds and/or a kitchen at a reasonable rate. I like the atmosphere at Fort Wilderness but I do like camping and campgrounds and the family vibe there. The cabins feel somewhat secluded and I like that actually. The location is convenient to the MK and the other monorail resorts. The bus transportation at the Fort is fine - but in general I really like Disney buses and just "go with the flow". There are so many resorts to enjoy - why not choose something you really love and just take transportation or drive to your meals even if they are not nearby.

Thanks for the info. How do you go about renting DVC points? That seems like a great option if the rooms fit 5. We were planning on getting the dining plan too, is that possible using rented points?

There is a board here where you can rent through individual owners.

Or google DVC rental companies (I think that one is a sponser here and one isn't, so I don't know which I can mention). Less risk with the DVC rental companies but you will pay a little more, i have seen two that are highly recommended, but they have slight differences in policies. Either way, you can't cancel DVC rental (money is spent), so keep that in mind.

Here is the DVC rental company that is a DISboards sponsee.

I agree in general, though - skip FW and find a room at WL that accommodates five.

Sounds like your sole purpose in a split stay at the cabins is for the two meals. Why not just stay longer at the Poly and use the boats to get to these meals? Easy enough to either monorail or boat to MK and then use boat transportation to either WL or Fort Wilderness.

I would like to jump on this thread with my question too.

I have 11 people split between 2 cabins this coming May. All adults with only few of us non-Pooh sized.

Now that they have gotten rid of the Murphy Bed, how comfortable is the pull out couch for adults? Is that "pull out couch bar" an issue? You know, the one that you feel on your back when you sleep.

Also, I will be on the top bunk but can a bigger adult manage the bottom bunk? Or are these really only kid size?

Just a note: Hubby HUGE FW fan as he went multiple times as a kid. Me a CBR fan but don't think I could tolerate the construction.

I'm pooh sized but about 5'2" and slept on the bottom bunk. I will be truthful & say that with my head on the pillow my feet touched the foot of the bunk. My 6'+ husband tried to sleep there one night & he was miserable. Had to keep his knees folded.

There is a debate if the Murphy Bed or the couch is better. The couch doesn't have a bar ... I'm not going to explain it right, but it pulls out versus unfolds ... I thought that the couch was comfortable enough, but I know not everyone agrees. The bottom bunk should be okay for a wide Pooh, but not a tall Pooh. The queen sized bed is really nice (of course I normally manage to snag that one all to myself. We end up with a girl on each bunk, me in the bed, and DH and DS sharing the couch bed. We have been before and my mother has slept on the bottom bunk ... she is 5'6" and not Pooh sized ... probably around a 12/14 when she slept on it and she was fine width wise but her feet were over the edge if she stretched out.

My adult son slept on the sleeper sofa last year and had no complaints. Never felt a bar through the mattress. I think they're made differently than the typical cheap hotel sleeper sofa.

My younger, 5'4" son, slept on the lower bunk. He was fine there, but that's probably about the maximize height you'd want to put on the bunk beds unless you have someone who likes to sleep curled up.

We found all the beds in the cabin to be quite comfy, but the bunk beds do sleep a bit short.

I sleep better at FW than anywhere else!

For our family the appeal of the fort is that it can accommodate our family in one unit. It has a kitchen which allows for us to have food on hand for non park days or when you are craving a late night post park snack. The bathroom was of decent size. The bunk bed was neat for the kids. The resort itself is beautiful, but we are outdoorsy people. Our family has enjoyed the pools at the fort. There's a quiet pool near the cabins that is no frills and has never been very crowded when we've used it. The feature pool is decent sized and has a nice slide. There's also a little kids play feature.

No, you cannot pool hop at WL. If you're staying in the Cooper Creek Cabins/villas or Boulder Ridge Villas you can as they are on WL property.

I will be honest and say that the resort is huge, which is why there is an interior bus transportation system. Is it needed? No. But ultimately it's your call. We've always rented a golf cart, but that's our preference.

If you're concerned about the appearance of the fort and don't think that the vibe is for you then don't stay there. You will not have room service. Transportation might take a little longer than you'd probably like as you'll have to drive/walk/or use internal shuttle to the MK boat dock or main bus terminal. But if you are looking for a more relaxing place than this might be it.

I love it there and my family thinks it's terrific - no neighbors, a nice living room and a deck to hang out, and nice peaceful grounds. Having a kitchen doesn't mean you have to cook your meals. But having some cereal and milk, coffee in the room, snacks, etc. is great. A full fridge holds a lot of water and fruit, snacks, etc.

If they would put a stacking washer/dryer in a cabin, it would count as a Deluxe Villa as far as I'm concerned. That would make it perfect!

The thing that annoys me is that we have 5 people and the Lodge does not fit 5, because I would much rather stay there. One of my bucket list things is to stay at every Disney resort once before I die and this will at least cross off the cabins for me. I really can't see me doing the cabins any other time. Is the Lodge the only Deluxe that does not 5?

AKL only holds four as well. Both WL and AKL were designed by the same architect.

You may want to look at a studio at Boulder Ridge Villas at WL. They sleep 5, with a queen bed, pull out sofa, and a fold down bed like at POR or BWV. It might be tight, but sounds like WL would have the amenities your family would like. You can book a room through Disney or potentially rent DVC points, if there is availability. Also, the boat ride between WL and FW to get to HDDR is pretty nice and easy.

A lot of people rent through David's - just do a search for David's DVC rental.
