We just watched a vlog in which the vlogger's fan was confiscated and held by DCL. My husband brings a small fan on all of our trips and wonders if it will be allowed. I looked on the list of disallowed items, and didn't see fans listed. But, I saw an old thread from 2012 that said fans need to be inspected or something. What has your experience been?

From the DCL website:

Portable fans are permitted in your stateroom. However, you must contact Guest Services to have the Chief Electrician approve your fan.

Yes, someone just has to check them. I think its the engineer.

UPDATE: Didn't see PrincessShmoo said that. Sorry.

Do you know what they are looking for? Or know of a fan that is allowed?

You could also get one of the small personal rechargeable fans that people take to the parks, I don't think those would need to be inspected since they are technically battery operated.

Thanks all!

Does anyone know what they mean by contacting guest services to have the chief electrician approve it? Is that done in the port terminal? Or does the fan need to be packed in carry on and checked on the ship? In the video I watched, they had packed the fan in checked luggage and it was removed before her bags were delivered to her room.

We checked out some battery operated and rechargeable fans, but I don't think they would work for my husband. He sleeps with a fan, on full power, all night.

It would happen after you're onboard. To make it easier, quicker, you should carry it onboard, and immediately head for Guest Services to set up the inspection.

The fan should be in carry-on luggage as it has to go through security screening. Then, you will have to take it to Guest Services on board the ship to have it inspected and approved.

I've brought a small fan (white noise mostly) on several cruises. Once in carry on and once in checked luggage. I've never had them check/take it and I've never pre-arranged to have it checked. They might in the luggage area but I've had no problems in the past. Going again in Sept so we'll see if this statement holds true.

We brought fans in March with no issue. My husband would 100% never travel wihout one, deal breaker.
