Are selfie sticks banned yet?

Not sure if it is an "official rule" but I was not allowed to use one on the Aquaduck this past March.. They said I would need to use either my head or chest harness, which was fine by me.

Harnesses didn't seem to be a problem at all when we went in March. My 11 year-old daughter wore a head-mounted GoPro on AquaDuck and I wore it while parasailing. Sure, we looked funny, but we weren't bumping into anyone with a stick.

Well, that's the way it's pretty much been on the AquaDuck since the beginning. At first they did allow hand-held cameras, but it fairly quickly changed to only those that can be strapped to your body or head.

While I don't use a selfie stick often I see their purpose sometimes. When my in laws went to the community fireworks this year and everyone was keeping to themselves it was fun to have photos of everything. Years prior someone was always missing. We could easily get 5-6 people in a shot instead of 2 or 3 that a standard selfie allows. We weren't blocking anyone, didn't use it during the fireworks, and didn't extend it beyond our "space" and into anyone else's. We were no more disruptive then the kids playing football who would throw the ball into people's picnic dinners.

I think there is a time and a place for them but it is best to know when to use them. I almost took someone's phone out here in NYC because they were using a selfie stick trying to get a family photo with the Empire State Building in the background. The problem was they had it sticking out past an intersection trying to get a better angle and I was more focused on the people around me not a small pole with a camera on it.

Its an official rule on the Aquaduck. Basically the only camera allowed are Gopro or Gopro type cameras that are secured to you by chest or wrist mount. Recently it was relaxed a little to include a head mounts, and cameras with wrist straps. The reason is that if something happens where a guest loses something a few things happen. ( I asked out of curiousity one day) In some cases some CMs will deviate from the rule but don't expect the deviation on every ride.
1. There is a danger that the clear tube can become scratched or damaged due to a lost item.
2. A lost item could potentially inadvertently hurt another guest following.
3. Once an item is lost, the whole ride has to be shut down, and someone has to walk the tube to find and recover it. Then restart. On average it takes about 30 minutes from ride shutdown to clear the tube then restart the ride. The restart alone takes any where from 15-20 minutes, for the ride to start flowing water.

I can totally understand them not allowed on the Aquaduck or Aquadunk. That has disaster written all over it!!

But around the ship, while being mindful of others, is fine IMO.

I think theres also a difference in what is considered a selfie stick vs a monopod. I have a monopod for my Gopro that's is banned from the parks. With my Gopro on it, most of the time people don't know its there because the camera is small enough, especially when I stand infront of a support for the Aquaduck, or say a wall at the parks. The ones that are causing the problems are the short 18" versions that collapse and people hold their cameras out in front of them that's the problem. This is just me. Since the ban at the parks, what I'm noticing now, is that people are now holding up large tablets to video and take pictures of the parades and shows. I wouldn't be surprised if the same people are using them on rides. To me, that's a bigger problem then the true selfie sticks as multiple people are holding up 8-12" tablets, are blocking the view of the people behind them. After our last cruise we went to the MK to watch the MEP, and I stopped counting at 35 people using tablets to video the parade. (We were standing on the Main Street Train Station platform looking down on the crowds)

The tablet thing has been going on far longer than the selfie stick ban. As soon as wifi was added to the parks and/or tablets got cameras people started bringing in them in and using them. I personally have no clue why a tablet has a standard camera. I get front facing for video calls but nobody should be taking pictures with something that big.

I used my selfie stick on our last DCL cruise in Oct and only used it in non-crowded areas of the ship, if I even used it on the ship. For the most part it was for the port days. Like others have stated, if used correctly they are a great tool for pictures.
I am not sure why people even stated that they think selfie sticks are ugly, what does that have to do with anything?:confused3

I guess and this is me, that the true answer is that more and more people are starting to get into the me me me mentality. They don't are about anyone else or how there actions affect anyone else. You can see it just about any where. Watch how many people will congregate in the middle of a hall or doorway with others trying to get around. How many people rush an elevator without letting others get off first or those that were standing there before them. How many people cant wear a simple pair of nice pants and a nice shirt to dinner? (yes I understand some people may have a medical condition that may prohibit some items, like a full leg cast that prohibits wearing pants) But the I paid for my vacation and Ill do what I want is getting out of hand. At some point in time, someone is going to get hurt, if it hasn't happened already.

There are those of us who can act responsibly, and there are those of us who don't. Unfortunately, those of us who do act responsibly, have to pay the price for those that don't in some way shape or form.

How awful!! I don't know why people bother taking video of the parades - I can pretty much guarantee there is always a better quality version already on Youtube. Why inconvenience others and make yourself watch it through a screen? Just enjoy what's in front of you.
