Are preferred rooms at POR nicer?

I was wondering if POR preferred rooms were nicer, or just more convenient? Are they louder since they are closer to everything? We booked a preferred room for the first week in May, because I have kids with special needs and I wanted to be close to everything in case we need to get or one back to a quiet spot relatively easier since POR is a large resort. Now I'm wondering I they're going to be "too much" for when the boys need some down time.

Thoughts?

Preferred rooms are closer to the main pool and food court. In general, POR is a very peaceful resort so I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. If you're looking at the map in the link below, the main pool is located at Ol' Man Island. As you can see, Ol' Man Island is kind of secluded from the rooms.

I really don't think you'll have any issues with getting your kids some down time at POR.:thumbsup2

The rooms aren't nicer, but since the resort is so large, you'll appreciate the convenience. We stayed at POR in Dec 2011 in a preferred room. The CM at Disney Travel suggested paying for that upgrade because our children were 4, 5, & 7 at the time. We were in building 14 and really liked being so close to the boat dock, dining, and buses...especially on evenings when one or two kids fell asleep on the bus :). At that time, they were renovating the resort, so it guaranteed us a renovated room as well. However, all of the renovations were completed last year.
You'll love the resort. We're heading back this June and can't wait!

Not nicer, closer and worth every penny. You could really get stuck in never, never land. If you don't have a car with you, don't do it. Seriously, having to take a bus to get to the pool isn't my idea of a vacation.
Don't worry about the noise -- much less here than some of the other resorts.
