Are people really nicer down south?

I'm not too sure. We know several people who have moved south who were not accepted very well because they were from the north. The joke was they were still calling the civil war the "war of northern aggression." One family moved back!

But I think that could happen anywhere. People in the south are as friendly as people in the north, east and west.

I have a story about that. I was in GA for a competition. Well we were being silly and playing in the public fountain. Long story short, all the officer kept calling me was a yankee girl. I explained that I was south of the Mason Dixon line (but I think that just made the Officer more mad.)

My ex (from Louisiana) kept arguing with me that North Carolina and Virginia were northern states, not southern. Well, she was a big Dale Earnhardt fan and I ended the argument by saying "Well if North Carolina is a northern state, that makes Dale Earnhardt a Yankee" ;)

Sorry about that. I didn't mean to rough you up so badly.:teeth:

Maybe it is a question of manners and upbringing. I think people here in Delaware are basically leary of strangers and ignore people unless they are family or friends. Down south people are nicer because the mood is more relaxed and slower paced.

I worked in an office once where the senior managers were so nice to everyone. As a result, everyone seemed more at ease and it was a friendly office. I have worked at places where senior management was cold and uptight and the mood was negative as a result.----- I do not think the people in the office were any nicer at either office just a tone was sent out and people responded. I think living in the south is much like the first friendly office.

What do you think?

I have found down here it is a fake niceness.

I think Southern "Ladies" coined the phase "kill them with a smile."

I also think we like tourists (they go home), but are suspicious and standoffish when "outsiders" move in. Our community is experiencing a growth, and some people especially the older generation is not too happy about it.

Well, before I moved to the DC area many years ago, I always heard that DC was a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm ;)

And you were told accurately........ ;)

How much friendlier can we be?:confused3 :confused3 :p :p

Best answer of the day!

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

:D Being a Southern Belle my whole life, I can tell you it's a twisted, twisted, world! Yes, I believe in general southern people come off as more friendly...but as a few others have stated, it's FAKE!! However, being nice to everyone TO THEIR FACE was pounded into me from day one. My Grandparents were from "Old Memphis Folk" and you'd better believe I had to practically tap dance my way around their friends and show off my "good breedin'". STILL HAVE TO SAY "YES MA'AM" WHEN I"M THERE AND I'M A MA'AM MYSELF! ;)

Anyway, went on to go to college in Mississippi...and started my family there. Way more disturbing than Memphis in MHO and we couldn't wait to get out of there. We live in Texas now and I LOVE it and feel it's a great balance. Much better environment for my girls to live in.

DH is from Chicago - there's a great chance we'll be moving there in the future. He swears I will burst into tears the first time someone speaks to me. I still get stomach clenches listening to his parents talk to one another (he's from NYC and she's from Ohio) - just seems so mean to me when they're just having casual conversation! So, I admit, I sort of LIKE the fake niceties! Bye, y'all!

Hmmm....I "think" you remind me of another poster who started up "controversial threads" just to stir the pot.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

This is too funny.

I have family in Southern Alabama, one family memeber insists that Virginia is a Northern State and that Montgomery AL was the only capital of the Confederacy. Where do they think their hero, Robert Lee, was from?

Yea, I've heard the term "carpetbaggers" slip out of a few relatives' mouths on this subject.

I'm originally from TN, but I've lived all over (including GA, PA, IL, MI, and TX), and I'd agree that people are more likely to smile and talk about "pleasantries" in the South. It may be fake, but it is certainly a nicer way to get through the day, even if it may take a few more seconds to get through the Blockbuster line.

I'm really nice and I live 30 minutes from the Canadian border in Vermont.

;)

Oh by the way, did I tell you how good you look today, if there is anything you need just ask, have you lost weight, I love your outfit, you are so nice.....:p :p :p

Everytime I travel to the southern United States nearly everyone I come in contact with is SO FRIENDLY. So many smiles and warm greetings and friendly help to the travelers. I have never lived down south but I would be interested in knowing about the experiences of others who have traveled to or moved to one of the 13 southern States.

I currently live in Delaware and while I have a circle of friends, I would say most strangers I come in contact with are a bit cold and stand-offish. I try to talk to the neighbors but get mostly short one word answers and frowns.

If I want friendly and nice, is the south for me?

No offense to southeners, but if your the wrong color in the wrong part of the south you might not find it so friendly;)

Excuse me, but that would be Robert E. Lee no southerner would every refer to the General as Robert Lee...

That is true in parts that arent south. We went into a part of WV and Dh went into the grocery store. he came out and said that he was not getting out of the car again:p

Howdy ya'll
I can only speak for myself...
"I'm as sweet as my tea;) "
