Due to a football injury, 12 year old DS has a fractured foot. Podiatrist thinks (although we're trying PT, braces, etc. first) he'll eventually need a cast. Waiting for an appt. w/Orthopedic Surgeon, maybe he'll speed things up. If not, the timing will coincide w/our Dec. Cruise (that's what I get for waiting to purchase the Trip Insurance until October - it's now a pre-existing condition).

The disAbilities board consensus is that they allow passengers with casts & bringing on a fold up wheelchair if desired.

Although I'm trying to think positively, does anyone know of any DCL restrictions on passengers with casts?

Additionally, do you think he'd have a difficult time manuvering around the ship with a cast? I assume all decks can be reached by elevator?

i'm not sure what the official ruling of DCL is on this one, if any. however, on our last cruise, i did see a passenger who had a cast on his leg. the ship is pretty much handicap-accessible so it should not be a problem for your son. only thing is, he would not be able to swim.... :(

Ask for a waterproof cast padding with a fiberglass cast. You may need to do that in advance, so the hospital or Dr. office can order it in special.

The other option is to get a good cast cover that will essentially make the cast waterproof.

Talk to the orthopod about this. He/She may have some ideas to help you out. But, just so you know, the waterproof stuff is probably a little more expensive than the "regular" options, so they generally don't offer them.

Good Luck!

There was a little girl about 10 yrs old in line to take pictures with Donald at the port in San Pedro the day of our cruise; she had a purple cast on her arm and Donald signed her cast!! How cool!

Our 7 year old broke his arm before our last cruise.

We did a land/sea and he got the cast signed by all the characters at Disneyworld, and when he went to swim on the cruise, I had a waterproof cover that worked great. It was also useful when he took a shower.

Here is the company:

I am sure he is aloud on the ship, but I would call dcl maybe they have a wheelchair accessable room available if necessary.

All decks are wheelchair accessible. Deck 10 , it's best to use the elevators by Palo's as they have a much better doorway to exit through.
Tell DCL so the wait staff will have a chair removed at your table so your son can pull right up to his spot at the table. I have seen this many times. They do it with high chairs too. It makes for less confusion at dinner. The gangplank to get on an doff the hsip is easily accessible too.
Excursions will be a different story, best to check with DCL on that.
Theaters have special seating at the back for wheelchairs and attendants there 30 minutes before showtime to help, if needed.
You'll have no problem.

Thanks for all the hints, now we just have to wait & see. :goodvibes

DD5 broke her growth plate in her ankle 3 weeks before we left on our cruise last year.

Docs put her in a waterproof cast so she could swim, she just couldn't slide, get in sand, :sad1: or run. Doctors had already given us a what she can/can't do for school so we faxed copies of that with the Medical information form to DCL so that Oceanears Club would know.

We limited her time in the Club to character appearances and craft times. We kept her away as much as we could from the times when they would climb the pirate ship and also kept her from the Mickey Slide.

She could walk some, and when she got tired, we used an extra stroller that we brought. Elevator wait was sometimes a little long, but she said she was fine and said that overall the cruise was great. (we did have to cancel some of our excursion plans to non-beach activities but she still thought they were fun)

This year, though, she really wants to go down the slide and play on the beach.

Ask for the Gortex liner. That is what makes the fiberglass casts water friendly.

My DS had an arm cast in Feb 2004-no problem!

Bet she's really looking forward to the cruise this year, never fun to sit on the sidelines.

My oldest DS also broke/shattered his growth plate in hand many years ago (another football accident). He had to have pins inserted and another operation a year later. He's fine now, works as a HS head football coach & youth counselor. This is our family's 3rd major football injury, hope it's our last. :goodvibes
