Are many parents getting swine flu from their kids?

Both of my sons had a swab of his nostril done. It was positive for type A. Around here if it's type A they are saying (or treating it as) it is Swine and not seasonal. Either way, the flu is the flu.

I work in early childcare, my boss told me to stay home for the week. If anyone else in the house gets sick she said I'll be staying home longer. She is being very proactive in trying to prevent the spread of the flu.

My youngest just came home and told me he was told that 60 kids in the school are out today. We live in a very small town, so that's alot of kids for us. 2 of those kids are mine.

I just want to know HOW do you know you have it, or your kids have it? I live in vermont. and 2 weeks ago my 7 year old had a 103 fever for about 3 days, he would cry becuase his head hurt so bad, and he had a cough. He basicly slept for 3 days!
Sat. my 9 year old was fine all day then, he fell asleep early, and I felt him, he had a fever too. It's only got up to 101. He's fine today. He also has a cough. Then this morning I got a call from the school nurse and I had to go pick up my 11 year old daughter because of fever, she looked and acted fine this morning 2 hours before the call. She says her neck and back hurts, and her head. small cough, and has had a sore thoat for a couple days.

So is this just a normal cold or H1N1?? Normally my kids, except my younger one, don't get fevers with just a cold. I didn't think it was this widespread in vermont yet, so I'm having a hard time believing it's the H1N1 I guess.

Hi Vermonter :thumbsup2 I'm in vermont too and I've heard that it is widespread here. I would guess that is what your family has. Good luck to all of you.

W/O the flu swab to at least indicate a flu virus....someone wouldn't know 100% for sure they have a flu virus. There are many infections/colds that can cause the same exact symptoms. So, even being exposed does not mean that it's "For Sure" the flu.

About 4 weeks ago My son got sick on Sunday....slept all day Monday and Tuesday. He literally only got up to use the bathroom. He had a cough, very sore throat, headache, and runny nose. He threw up a few times. If he had a temp it was low grade, because I never took it. He felt run down on Wednesday but better. Went back to school Thursday. He was never seen, as I thought at the time it was just a cold, because at work (I work in a very large health clinic) we were not hearing of any active flu cases.

Same week, Wednesday I started w/ a sore throat and by later that day I could barely move I hurt all over and was really clamy. I had NO FEVER. I went to work Thursday to be seen the first thing in the morning, and I tested positive w/ a flu swab. Presumed H1N1 because seasonal flu was not active yet. I was very sick Thursday-Saturday. I would run hot and cold and go from shivering to extreme sweating. I had no recordable fever though. I had a terrible cough, really sore throat, not too much in the way of nasal congestion. I had a lot of nausea then really bad diarrhea. I could barely move for those 3 days. Sunday I felt a bit better, but still slept most of the day. Then I went back to work Monday and felt run down most of the week, but better on a whole. I was prescribed Tamiflu and started it first thing Thursday morning.

Dh never got sick at all, and I do not know for sure if my son had the flu first or not. I only know that I was diagnosed w/ it.

I know slews of kids that have had it, and only a handful of parents got it as well. Which I guess is good - since parents struggle to care for their wee ones when they are sick as well - but is also a little odd, since they are so close to them.

Adults can definitely get it. A 62 year old friend of mine died of complications this past week. He had no prior medical conditions.

I just hate it when I hear someone say that H1N1 is no big deal. It is a big deal. Of course, no one should panic over it, but it should be taken seriously.

kilee..your post has helped answer a question for me! You can have it without a fever...! I would love to get my daughter swabbed..just to know if she has it or not..because if she does..there is such a thing as a milder form.

My daughter 12, has been at home since Thursday..she came home not feeling well on wednesday and went straight to bed. no fever. She started having diarrhea. Thursday she complained of body aches, sore throat and nausea...no fever. It looks like she has been exposed because the girls she hung out with on Sat and sun..seem to have the "classic" symptoms. Some have 101 and some 104. DD hasn't gotten out of bed the whole weekend..just is weak and tired. She moved around a bit yesterday and said her diarrhea was getting better but her throat was still sore! No fever. Her asthma has kicked up a bit..she feels tight here and there and needs a neb..But she has controlled exercise induced asthma. Then I have had a horrible cold in my chest...coughing like crazy. Could I have it too? No fever. I am actually going to the doc today to make sure it isn't a bronchial thing.. DD5 has bad asthma. He started wheezing yesterday and was on the neb every 4 hours and woke up this morning needing it..All he has is a stuffy nose<had vaccine a week ago>. Weird.

This is what the girls in my area in NJ had. They all had a fever ranging from 101 to 104. ..it lasted about 3 to 4 days ..They all went back to school and a couple ended up back home with that bounce back fever. But now they are doing fine..

It's presumed both of my girls have it right now.... our pediatrician practice would not see them yesterday to test for it as they are absolutely inundated with H1N1 patients. Unless they are having difficulty breathing, are extremely lethargic, etc., they want everyone to keep the children home and treat it as the flu..... yesterday I did find out that my DD's BFF that she sits with all day at school, at lunch, recess, etc.... was confirmed at her pediatrician yesterday as having Influenza A (most likely H1N1) through a swab... both my DD and her friend began with a sudden onset of symptoms Sunday morning (fever, horrendous cough, chills, congestion, tiredness) so our pedi is assuming H1N1 for my girls as well. Yesterday their school had 81 kids out (out of 550) Many of them were able to see their MD's and were confirmed with influenza.

Today both woke up feeling a bit better and their fevers are down... 99.6 and 99.3. I was going to pick up the Tamiflu they called in late last night (one DD is asthmatic) and start it this morning to get it in before the 48 hour mark hits...but I don't know if they need it now? They were miserable as anything last night and woke up almost refreshed this morning????

I'm still Lysoling everything and trying to keep my distance as much as possible since they have each other to snuggle with :grouphug: (they are 7 and 9).... I had the windows open yesterday and Sunday even though it was in the upper 50's... just trying to circulate some fresh air in so that DH and I are spared.....

My doc diagnosed me with H1N1 end of July. I was sick as a dog. My DH was sick with something (but the doctor didn't give him the H1N1 diagnoses because he had no fever). The kids were healthy as can be though the whole thing. They never got sick. That was a totally un-fun weekend... parents sick, kids heathy, and all our friends/sitters decided to leave town that weekend so no sitters.

You do not need to have a fever to have H1N1, so your DH probably had it too. Over 30% of H1N1 cases do not have a fever. That's one reason it is hard to contain...people think they must not have the flu because they do not have a fever, so they keep working/going to school, etc.

Me too.

 I am so sorry to hear about your friend dying from it it.

I can't believe how some people are so la di da about this virus. We have already had over 1000 deaths in this country and our hospitals are filling up with people who are having secondary problems due to the swine flu.

I'm not "la di da" about it, but I'm not super freaked out about it either. All illnesses can cause deaths. The regular flu causes deaths every year too. I can't be torqued up with anxiety over the possibilities. I'd never be able to function if I let myself think of the worst case senerios of every illness.

My whole family, and a good chunk of my extended family was hit with the H1N1 flu last week. That include me, DH and our 5 kids (12, 11, 9, 2 and 2), my brother, SIL and their 3 kids (12, 11 and 5)....along with a friend and her family (DH and 3 kids...13, 11 and 9). Of the 17 of us, nobody had any complications. My 5 yr old nephew was seen in the ER because his temp went very high, but he was not admitted and was fine the next day. Seriously, I have been much sicker with the regular flu. Obviously, not everyone is so lucky....but as I said, that is the case with all illnesses. A couple yrs back there was a local 4 yr old that died from regular flu complications. He was an otherwise healthy kid. Very sad.
