My DH will be running in "The Race For Taste" and the Half Marathon. Right now he runs with his Ipod and he says he is not sure how he would do without it. I thought I read somewhere that he could not use it for these races and he should start practicing without it.

Any Official word on wether or not he can use it during the race?

Do you run wiht an Ipod or another musical device? How did you learn to run without it?

Thank you!

Offically you are not allowed any ear / head phones, but nobody inforces it!!!!

Yup, never seen it enforced. He'll just want to make sure teh volumeis low enough that he can hear emergency bikes or bvehicles coming.

I had mine with me during the Minnie 15K this year and did use it for the portion where there was a super long boring road stretch before MGM. I did not use it at all after getting into MGM and EPCOT. I did only use one earbud though and took both out when approaching water stops. From what I have heard from others is that there is alot more music on the half course and the ipod really becomes unecessary.

I brought mine for my first marathon and used it a bit. There was enough going on that it wasn't really necessary. I won't have it again. I feel like I am missing too much of the total experience using it. I will also say that if you really use it to get through the tough times, it will come in handy from miles 18 to about 22. Those are the tough ones.

I have never seen Disney enforce the rule , it is there to cover there butts mostly. Some races have disqualified runners who used it, they went back through the photos taken at the events and then disqualify those that have the earphones in.
I do caution that if you use them to either turn the volumne down so you can hear someone tell you they are passing you or take one out of one ear. I have had experiences when people can't hear others and they can get so caught up in "their own world" they don't hear people passing them or emergency people or the bike EMTs or the bike guys that go in front of the wheelchair people. The WDW half has many places where there will be music playing and DJs doing there thing. There are cheerleaders, marching bands, a steel drum band, a choir and music playing in the parks, so lots going on so don't miss it.

I carried mine on the full, not needed on the shorter events and maybe not even the full, but I like having it just in case for the full.

I'd also add to all of the above that there are many folks in these events and he should try to chat as he goes. Most folks have fun doing that. Even if he is feeling shy to talk he should enjoy a bit of that. Don't have to hook with anyone for the entire time--moments of conversation help to pass the time too. Runners/walkers/woggers are really mostly a friendly bunch.

I used mine for the Minnie 5K. No problem. I was concerned prior myself as I have a tough time running without it but it was fine. But, I did keep the volume low enough so I could hear what was going on around me. I don't think I could learn to run without it but some races don't allow it.

During the Minnie 5K I didn't notice many "chit-chatters" other than those that were racing together, as most of the solo runners were pretty serious about just running the race.

I would imagine some of the routes along the Race for the Taste being a bit boring (ie. the road from The Wide World of Sports to Hollywood Studios). I may run that one and I plan to have my IPOD especially for that part of the race. ;)
