...to be replaced by a "gift card" that may be purchased (up to $1500) and used anywhere in the parks including dining. Maybe this is old news but according to the staff at the Disney store in our town that's what's going to happen.

I guess it will be easier to carry one card rather than a wad of bills! One thing I don't like about some gift cards is that you lose track of how much you have left (ok, I know some don't). Also with some, say you have $35 left on the card but are trying to buy something for $50, well with some it rejects the card as no good rather than taking the $35 and saying you then owe $15. Again not with all gift cards does this happen but I wonder how Disneys works? I believe I heard that on the receipt of a purchased item it will list the remaining balance on the card. Anyone know if this is so?

I think they Disney store (vendor now CP ) are on their way out .But i think the parks will continue to offer them as they are a nice collectable.

It is unknown as of now if Disney Dollars are being phased out. In recent years there have been a lot of counterfeiting issues with Disney Dollars and they had been researching a new method of store and park tender to decrease the problem. I will say that it won't surprise me if it happens but it hasn't been annouced, it is all just speculation. The cast member was just telling you its a possibility, they haven't heard anything to support this theory.

The cards will not decline if you don't have the total amount on them, it will run what you have and then tell the cashier the balance owed. It should list your balance on the receipt after purchase, but since its new it may take a while for all the software kinks to get worked out. The whole deal with gift card denials when you don't have the amount tends to only be for Credit Card sponsored gift cards, like Visa and American Express.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you need clarification.

I also think that they will keep Disney Dollars at the parks for a while. There seems to be too much demand for them to phase them out. I figured the gift cards were for those people who didn't want to Disney Dollars or just like cards better.

Oh I hope that they ae here to stay for a while. My DD gets them for DGD to spend while in Disney. SHe is only four, but understand the concept of money, and how far it goes, so she saves. Anyway, shopping with her Disney Dollars while in Disney is a special treat for her. She enjoys the characters on them, and actually wants to "buy" her own.

Disney Dollars are not on the way out. The Disney Stores still have them. One location may be sold out at the moment, but they still have them. My store used to sell out all the time.

Customers always wanted a card they could use at WDW that they bought at the DS. Now they have it. You think the Disney Store (Hoop Retail, the CP, whatever they're known as these days) would listen to customers when they tell them to bring back more adult clothing & hardlines, but I digress. :(

We have some Disney Dollars that my DGD has had since 1996, are these still good? If not, will we be able to exchange them for the current ones? Sounds silly, but I am wondering. :confused3 pixiedust:

Not only are they still good but you may be able to get more than they are worth if you Ebay them as collectors!?

I just bought Disney Dollars at the Disney Store for our upcoming trip and nothing was mentioned about it them being phased out. But I do think that more people opt now for the Disney Gift Card. :)

My mom tried to buy some for me at a "huge" disney store in New York (somewhere near Trump Tower?), and they specifically told her they do not carry them anymore and would only be carrying the gift cards :confused3

It's possible she just spoke with an uninformed CM, our store got a huge shipment of them last week. Although, it is important to note that the World of Disney Store on 5th Ave is NOT a Disney Store. World of Disney is owned and operated by the theme parks while regular Disney Stores are owned and operated by The Children's Place.

I am not surprised by this . The only place you can buy Disney Dollars at WDW is guest services. The stores do not sell them only redeem them.

I was just at the Disney Store yesterday (have to go in every time I'm in the mall) and did not ask about the Disney Dollars, but I did see some gift cards. I personally like the gift cards they sell at WDW, they are blue with Mickey on them. I like how you can have money on it, reload it, etc. Perfect for traveling, or for a gift. Disney Dollars are cute, though. And, I hope they do not discontinue them. As far as the Disney Store carrying more 'adult' clothing items...THANK YOU! When I was a bit younger, they used to have all kinds of fun Pjs for Men and Women, and now I cannot find an outfit for anyone over the age of maybe 10. They did just come out with this beautiful beach print line, and my store near my house had the tote bags, purses, and women's wraps, men's shorts, and then boy and girls pieces. It is a beautiful red and white with hawaiin flowers, and a large mickey face on the side, and inside of his face is a beach scene with Minnie and Mickey. Reminds me of the Poly... Anyone know what I am talking about, or have seen it? I bought the purse yesterday....

I'm not which store she went to, but I do know that they directed her downstairs to their offices to speak to someone about the Disney Dollars.

I didn't realize that - so the WOD store is not a Disney store, but is it owned by Disney? :confused3

WO carries themepark merchandise it is operated by the theme parks division of the company. The Disney Store is now owned by The Children's Place. Disney sold it about 2 years ago I think.

I saw the clothing line at the Disney Store you are referring to! It was cute, but a little too bold for DH so he wouldn't wear anything to match me. :( Last year's was blue and more subdued. I wanted the purse real bad though!

World of Disney in NYC is owned and operated by the WDW Resort. You can find some of the same stuff in that store as WOD in DTD, plus some specific NYC stuff. My friend was there last year and liked it. Bought me a Minnie Statue of Liberty pin! The Disney Store mall chain is owned and operated by Hoop Retail, a wholly owned subsidiery of The Children's Place. (Hoop is Pooh backwards.) Can you tell I've given this schpeel before?? Imagine the fun we went thru in November 2004 when the stores changed over! :)

I hope they dont get rid of them. I remember stuffing them into plastic Easter eggs and hiding them all over the place for my kids. Too much fun. Rhonda

I sure hope the Disney Dollars aren't on their way out, because I have been very slowly but surely working on getting some with the Sunshine Rewards. I have been clicking my little fingers off. :rotfl2:

I think Disney Dollars are here to stay, there is alot of demand for them.

As for the giftcards, it is wonderful that this one card will work at so many places (not just the disney stores and WDW, but Disneyland Resort, Disney Crusieline, disneyshopping.com and the disney catalog too). Atleast once a day (if not more) while working at World of Disney @ WDW during my CP last fall, someone would try to use a gift card they bought at the Disney Store (or have gotten with the Disney Visa offer from TDS) and we would have to turn them away because they would not work at WDW.

Also last thing I want to add is that the gift card system at WDW is pretty brand new only starting sometime last year. So there may still be a place or two that the cards will not work (but Disney Dollars will :) )

As for the designs of the new Gift Card, Mickey is the only one currently being offered, but from what I have heard, a few other styles will be offered at some point.

Oh, but nothing was worse than when we stopped taking catalogue and online returns last year...boy were people angry! I felt so bad having to turn them away! Did you/Do you work for TDS?
