Are dining reservations an indication on crowds??

We are going in September during the free dining that was offered. I’m seeing certain restaurants are pretty booked for the times I am wanting. Is this an indication to how busy the parks may be???
The two I’m looking into are in MK and Epcot.

I think it's more because the free dining is in effect and of the 2 hour cancellation policy. People book more since they have a more generous time frame to cancel. Though I do think September will be busier than we expect (when we are going). Room availability has dropped, I still check on a regular basis.

We usually go in May when it is not very crowded (similar to September for the most part) and dining is always booked up. I don't think that's too related to crowds, most popular restaurants have no availability all the time.

Free dining is always going to make some ADR's harder to get than others.

Exactly when are you going?
Labor Day? Yes its going to be more crowded.
Second couple week when its the PEAK of hurricane season? No its not going to be as crowded.
Late September headed into October? Yes its going to be more crowded.

Remember that a "crowd" in September is very easy to manage! We've joined the hoards of people Christmas week and had a great trip. PlannIng ahead makes all the difference! I remember the days that dining reservations were gone at 180 days out. I still see a bunch of places left for our dates. One thing we've noticed is pools seem busier than December. Makes sense as people are escaping the crazy heat. September 6th can't get here soon enough!!!
