I know some give the meal, a drink and dessert....but wanted to check!

Appetizers are only included in the Deluxe Dining Plan

Appetizers are not included in the regular DDP, but are if you have the deluxe dining plan.

The only time that an appetizer is included when using the regular DDP is when order from a pre-fixe menu or at certain fixed price locations (e.g., CRT, which costs 2 credits, but includes all three courses, plus the non-alcoholic/non-specialty drink).

FREE APPETIZERS AT TABLE SERVICE MEALS:

. . . if, you are on the Deluxe Dining Plan (aka, DxDP), not the normal DDP
. . . if, you purchase a Pre Fixe menu selection, where/when offered
. . . if, you are having a buffet or all-you-can-eat meal

. . . if, not eating per above, then appetizers are an added cost
. . . and, appetizers cannot be substituted for desserts when doing DDP
