My wife and decided to get a cat on Friday. Initially, our thinking was, "Well, we've seen a couple of mice, so a cat would get rid of them, and they're easy to take care of."

However, we both fell in love with it immediately. Most cats I've come across aren't that friendly. The either scratch, bite or both. Our Tootsie (that was her name from the shelter) is an angel. She's lovable, fun, and always uses the litter box. She sleeps right between my wife and I. Granted, she's only 6 months old, but I can't imagine her tempermant changing if her enviroment doesn't.

no they arent all that great...i had cats..and mine would pee outside the box...then find a place to poop on my clothes...once the children came along one decided it would be fun to bite the girl...that was it..at that point no more cats....

Every cat has a unique personality...sounds like you got a really friendly, lovable one! That's great and kudos to you for rescuing one from the shelter!

They can be this good though.

My indoor kitties on occasions will go outside the litterbox, but that's more my fault, if I don't get that scoop out each morning. At least I'm lucky they usually will go in the bathroom, at least the tiles easy to clean.

All of them are very loving, but one is extremely jealous, she will attack the youngest one, if she sees her getting near us. This same jealous cat HAS to sleep on DS10 at night. She's also the best of catching critters in the house. I find lizards almost every morning, that I must dispose of because of her. Also, did you know tree frogs scream when hurt? Flipped me out one night she got one of those.

All the cats I have ever had are different. We currently have three. The oldest is a 13yo grouch, but we love her anyway. We have one that is 4yo and very loving and protective of the kids, but doesn't want anything to do with us. We just got a kitten (8 weeks old) that is as sweet as can be -so far.

We have 2 cats. They both have wonderful personalities. They have used the litter box from day 1 with no accidents. They will sleep with us every once in awhile, but usually they like to play at night so they are kicked out of the bedroom. Enjoy your new kitty. It sounds like you've got a good one!

I agree that all cats are unique and it sounds like you've got a very friendly one. I got lucky too as my cat is very precious to all of us. She's the silliest cat I've ever seen though. She loves to open cabinets and crawl inside. She likes to get onto the counter and drink from a glass up there, so now that's where I keep her water as she's never drinks from her bowl. LOL My hubby wasn't too happy about that, but I figure, why fight it? We got her when she was between 5 and 6 weeks old (the mom cat had the kittens in our garage before we moved and mom cat was not our cat) and we went back and brought the kittens to our new home a few times, but then I loved this one little kitty and I was afraid someone else would take her so she may have been a little young. It was adorable watching her getting used to drinking water and eating solid foods those first few days. From day 1, she used the litter box and we've never had the slightest accident where that's concerned. We did move the litter box 4 times as she got used to it though. At first it started in the living room where she spent most of her time and we gradually moved it so she could get used to it and the house.

I don't think she knows she's a cat though as she hates tuna, shrimp, crab, fish, cheese, and ALL canned cat food. She does love chicken though! She always has to come around and smell whatever it is that you're eating, but it's never really went beyond a sniff and off she goes (unless it's chicken!). For treats, she'll eat 1 flavor of Pounce, but that's it!

She's declawed now and I know many people are against that. Our problem was never that she tried to hurt anyone, but everyone always had massive cuts from her accidentally getting them and one on my husband's wrist looked like it could require stitches, but he didn't go. Our dog loves playing with her too, but she constantly had cuts inside her mouth from playing with the cat. I know she'd do her best to retract those claws when I'd play with her, but she'd get so into playing that they'd come out anyway and I never played rough. I honestly think it's the best thing we could have done and she's become even more friendly since and she so enjoys playing more now. Everyone else enjoys playing with her more now too.

Welcome to the wonderful world of being a cat owner!

Enjoy your nw kitty. I never understood this cat affection thing. Not until I got mine, and then everything changed! We have four feral cats, rescued from the barn where my DH had cows. They are all gentle, and loving but with 4 different personalities. They have enchanted all of us, and I know that your little one will bring you joy also.

I remember never understanding cats, either, thought dogs were friendlier... THEN I got one!!

I realized that cats generally save their love and affection for their MAIN person and some cats don't relate well with people outside that realm. Until then I was always the "outside realm" person. I tell people all the time there is NO love like the love they give you.

I have had 6 cats since that first one. I have 4 now and they're ALL DIFFERENT. I have a VERY friendly queen, a scaredy cat, a pain in the neck and a gentle kind Mama's boy. It's like having 4 kids, they are as different as day and night.

Enjoy that baby! This is just the beginning!

I adopted a two year old cat with my fiance at the time. He was the SWEETEST cat from day one. Would sleep cuddled up next to me, always wanted attention, just wonderful. Then two and a half months later he started peeing in my fiance's gym bag. Then he started peeing on our blankets on the couch (even when his litter box was spotless and he had always gone there, we even tried changing the type of litter with no luck). So after making sure there were no blankets laying anywhere and no bags open for him, he started peeing on our towels and my clothes (he was neutered). We started shutting the door to our bedroom only to have him meow extremely loud outside of the door for months all during the night. It drove us crazy and I very much wanted to get rid of him even though he was still so sweet. We took him to several vets all of whom said nothing was wrong with him.

My fiance and I broke up later and he kept the cat. I think I won in the deal ;) . I seriously will never get another cat again. I had some wonderful cats growing up (and a few horrible ones). It isn't worth it to me to end up with 10-20 years of a bad one. Of course, I'm not a big cat person either. I love the doggies!

Good luck with your cat and I hope he/she stays as sweet and wonderful!

Was there alot of stressful situations going on? I know once when I went on vacation, one did pee on my bed. My poor sister was washing bed linens and scrubing the mattress while we were gone. Kitty just couldn't handle not having DS10 here, because sis took her to vet and all was clear too for her. Vet said she was probably stressed.
